The Cartographer's Story
This movie is a cinematic introduction to my work in cartography. I'm going to be starting a new series here on the channel dealing with the subject and ideally helping out people who are interested in this pursuit. I've been passionate about drawing maps since I was in grade school. There are very few serious fantasy cartographers out there, in large part because there's very little real work for cartographers. The joy, for me, is in creating the world -- the act of drawing it and making it real defines so much about the world that I wouldn't come up with just writing about it. This particular map is one of my largest projects, taking about 100 hours to complete since it involved learning a lot about geography and shading. The video shows a very simplified version of it, appearing in compiled layers. The world is also one of my favorites -- Evensfell. It's a world I've been thinking of since 2002 during my (very short) enlistment in the Marine Corps. I'm sure I'll talk more about this world in the future, too. I understand not many people will be interested in this subject matter. However, it's difficult to get in touch with people interested in this, and far more difficult to get specialized tutorials on the subject -- I'm hoping the audience here on YouTube will help me connect with these people. This is a visualization of US expansion in North America from 1700 to 1900, seen through changes in the spatial distribution of post offices.
Data from the USPS Postmaster Finder, with lat/long coordinates extracted from placenames through correlation with the USGS Geographic Names Information System.

Digital Cartography
By Andrew Ellis, Alexander Wang
Students at the Dynamic Media Institute
Massachusetts College of Art and Design
Digital Cartography is a short documentary film on the transition of maps into their digital form. In this film we speak with programmer and mapmaker Jeffrey Warren from the MIT Media Lab and Dietmar Offenhuber from SENSEable City Lab at MIT. We explore the cultural, economic and technical aspects of mapmaking and how they affect the way we communicate with one another.
In our interviews with Jeffrey and Dietmar we learn about the social and geographical ramifications of building maps and how designers can implement their literacy in communication design to explore different avenues for mapping. Participatory mapping such as Open Street Maps and psychogeography and the virtual dérive are some of the themes discussed around the history and future of mapping in the digital age. Jeffrey gives us a demonstration on low cost arial photography using a helium balloon and a consumer digital camera to stitch photos onto google maps.

16mm film with digital animations
Duration 4:28
“To orient is to hop back and forth between landscape and time, geography and emotion, knowledge and behaviour”
This experimental film explores the idea of mapping, orientation and our sense of space as it layers large-scale maps with filmed footage of close and personal spaces. The items and textures gain new meaning as they are recognized for both their commonality in their actual form, but also for what they may appear to be when charted.

What is the difference between this "communal cartography" and just populism? Adorable Baby and Insufficient Cartography: youtu.be I spend a lot of time each day thinking about "community".
