Bushey Meads School

Bushey Meads School (also known as "BMS") is a foundation secondary school in Bushey, Hertfordshire, UK. The current head teacher is Mr Keith Douglas, B.A. Hons, M.A., who started as a new member of staff in the school in December 2005.
It achieves relatively well in comparison with other schools in the area and is a recommended place in Hertfordshire for Sixth form studies. It offers a wide range of subjects.
Its close proximity to several TV studios (in particular Elstree) have made it an excellent location when school scenes were desired. TV programs featuring the school include Grange Hill, the comedy Roll Over Beethoven (starring Nigel Planer), Buddy (with Roger Daltrey) and Worms Alive! with Chas Fenton and also "Family Business" in which the students were involved.
Stan Lee paid BMS a visit in 2002. He is known as the creator of the popular comics of Spider-Man and co-creator of other comic book characters such as X-men, Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and The Fantastic Four.

Chigwell

Chigwell is a civil parish and town in the Epping Forest district of Essex. It is located 11.6 miles (18.7 km) north east of Charing Cross. It is served by two London Underground stations and uses the London (020) area code.
According to P. H. Reaney's Place-Names of Essex, the standard guide to etymology in the county, the name means 'Cicca's well', Cicca being an Anglo-Saxon personal name. In medieval sources the name appears with a wide variety of spellings including "Cinghe uuella" and Chikewelle". Folk etymology has sought to derive the name from a lost 'king's well', supposed to have been to the south-east of the parish near the border of what is now the London Borough of Redbridge. There were several medicinal springs in Chigwell Row documented by Miller Christy in his book History of the mineral waters and medicinal springs of the county of Essex, published in 1910. The proposal by 18th-century local historian Nathaniel Salmon that the "-well" element in the name derives from Anglo-Saxon weald (forest), indicating Chigwell's location in a royal demesne rather than Anglo-Saxon wielle (well) has long been superseded by modern onomastic study and is no longer credible.

Childwall

Childwall is a suburb of Liverpool, Merseyside, England and a Liverpool City Council Ward. It is located to the south of the city, bordered by Gateacre, Wavertree, Belle Vale, Broadgreen, Bowring Park and Mossley Hill. In 2008 the population was recorded as 14,085.
The earliest recorded reference to Childwall was in the Domesday Book of 1086.
"Four Radmans held Childwall as four Manors. There is half a hide. It was worth eight shillings. There was a priest, having half a carucate of land in frank almoign."
Childwall was known as Cileuuelle in the 1086 Domesday Book meaning 'a stream where youngsters meet' from the Old English words cild and wella. Historically the name has been recorded as Childewalle (1212 and 1332), Chaldewall (1238), Childwall (1261), Childewelle (1291), Chaldewal (1305) and Childewall (1354).
Childwall was traditionally part of the West Derby Hundred. It was an urban district from the Local Government Act 1894 until it was annexed to Liverpool in 1913.

Croxteth

Croxteth is a suburb of Liverpool, Merseyside, England and a Liverpool City Council Ward. Although housing in the area is predominantly modern, the suburb has some notable history. It is known locally as "Crocky". At the 2001 Census it had a population of 16,543.
The name is believed to derive from a contraction of Crocker's Staithe, or the landing place of Crocker, which is a likely reference to a Viking landing via the River Alt, which passes through Croxteth and at the time of the Viking invasion of Britain was navigable through the area. The similar root is also possible for Toxteth.
Prehistoric tools were found on a site in Croxteth in 1992, though there were no signs of any permanent settlement. Since then the land has been developed.
The suburb is adjacent to Croxteth Hall, the former home of the Earls of Sefton, and close to West Derby, another suburb that predates Liverpool, being recorded in the Domesday Book. The "Dog and Gun" Public House (closed, 2005) was a historic hostelry, likely associated with the hunt from Croxteth Hall.

Liverpool
Liverpool ( /ˈlɪvəpuːl/) is a city and metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England, along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. According to the Office for National Statistics, the 2010 mid-year population estimate for Liverpool was 445,200 and was part of a larger urban area of 816,216.
Historically a part of Lancashire, the urbanisation and expansion of Liverpool were both largely brought about by the city's status as a major port. By the 18th century, trade from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe coupled with close links with the Atlantic Slave Trade furthered the economic expansion of Liverpool. By the early 19th century, 40% of the world's trade passed through Liverpool's docks, contributing to Liverpool's rise as a major city.
Inhabitants of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians but are also colloquially known as "Scousers", in reference to the local dish known as "scouse", a form of stew. The word "Scouse" has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect. Liverpool's status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which, historically, were drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly those from Ireland. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.

Neptune House
Neptune House is an office block situated in the grounds of BBC Elstree Centre in Clarendon Road, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
The imposing office block dates from the 1960s and is distinctive by its glass-fronted entrance. Neptune House has featured in several popular television series, most notably as the school in Grange Hill, and since 1999, the hospital reception for Holby City. In 1989 a purpose-built set was constructed for Grange Hill at the back of the building, but was torn down in 2002 when the series left Elstree.
Prior to 1984, the Clarendon Road studios were owned by defunct ITV franchise holder ATV as their main production centre, then for a time by ATV's successor Central Independent Television. Neptune House could be seen in the opening titles to Gerry Anderson's sci-fi series UFO as the headquarters of SHADO in 1970.
The hospital "wards" in Holby City are actually the top floor of Neptune House, fully kitted out allowing genuine outside views from the windows. The building's staircases are seen almost constantly in the series.

North London
North London is the northern part of London, England. It is an imprecise description and the area it covers is defined differently for a range of purposes. Common to these definitions is that it includes districts located north of the River Thames and is used in comparison with South London. However, it is also often used in comparisons with Central London, East London and West London.
The River Thames divides Greater London into two parts. The northern part includes most of the historic central areas including the City, the East End and the West End; and the majority of the London Underground network.
This area is made up of the City of London and the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Brent, Camden, Ealing, Enfield, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, and Westminster. This definition is used by the Boundary Commission for England. The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames includes sections on both sides of the River Thames. The boundary commission class the entire district as part of South London.

Alan Hawkshaw
Alan Hawkshaw (born William Alan Hawkshaw, 27 March 1937, Leeds, West Yorkshire) is a British composer and performer, particularly of themes for movies and television programmes. Hawkshaw worked extensively for the KPM production music company in the 1960s and 1970s, composing and recording many stock tracks that have been used extensively in film and TV.
As such, he is the composer of a number of familiar theme tunes including Channel 4 News, Grange Hill and Countdown. In addition, he is an arranger and pianist, and in the United States scored a number 1 single on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart with "Here Comes That Sound Again" in 1979.
He is the father of dance artist Kirsty Hawkshaw, who was a member of the dance group Opus III from 1991 to 1995.
In the 1960s, he was a member of rock and roll group Emile Ford and the Checkmates. He also formed the Mohawks band and Rumplestiltskin with some session musicians. At that time Hawkshaw was an exponent of the Hammond organ, heard in the Mohawks' music, and also on the UK recording of the musical Hair.. In 1965 Hawkshaw played piano on The Hollies group composed album track; 'Put Yourself in My Place' included on the EMI/Parlophone album; 'Hollies' (1965) being featured on a piano solo during the song.

Alex Drake
DI Alexandra "Alex" Drake is a fictional character in BBC One's science fiction/police procedural drama, Ashes to Ashes. The character is portrayed by Keeley Hawes and as a child by Lucy Cole.
The character of Alex Drake is the main protagonist of Ashes to Ashes, the sequel to the 2006 series Life on Mars, which followed the story of Sam Tyler (John Simm) who wakes in 1973 after being hit by a car in 2006. Ashes to Ashes follows the similar storyline of Alex Drake who after being shot in 2008 awakes in 1981. The character has been described as "ballsy, confident and bright", along with being "perceptive in deduction" and "understanding the workings of the criminal mind"
During the first episode of Ashes to Ashes, it is revealed that Alex Drake is the unnamed police psychologist mentioned in the finale of Life on Mars, who interviewed and recorded case notes of Sam Tyler's time in 1973 and studied his subsequent suicide, as witnessed in the finale of Life on Mars.
During the opening scenes of the first episode, Drake, while driving her daughter Molly (Grace Vance) to school is unexpectedly called to a hostage situation near the embankment of the River Thames. Upon arriving, she is informed that the hostage taker, Arthur Layton (Sean Harris) is demanding to speak to her, despite Drake having no knowledge of him. Drake eventually negotiates the release of the civilian hostage in favour of herself. This prompts Drake's frightened daughter, Molly to rush past the cordon into the middle of the situation. Arthur Layton takes hold of Molly and rushes down the steps to the river's edge, followed by Drake shortly after to find her daughter unharmed with Layton missing. Upon returning to her car she fails to notice Layton in the back, who forces her at gunpoint to a disused barge and tells her that he knew her parents who died in 1981, Tim (Andrew Clover) and Caroline Price (Amelia Bullmore). Shortly after, Layton shoots Drake in the head.

Anthony Minghella
Anthony Minghella, CBE (6 January 1954 – 18 March 2008) was an English film director, playwright and screenwriter. He was Chairman of the Board of Governors at the British Film Institute between 2003 and 2007.
He won the Academy Award for Best Director for The English Patient (1996), which also won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the BAFTA Award for Best Film and Golden Globe Award for Best Director.
Minghella was born in Ryde, Isle of Wight, the son of Gloria (née Arcari) and Edward Minghella, ice cream factory owners. His father was an Italian immigrant and his mother was born in Leeds to an Italian family; her ancestors originally came from Valvori, a small village in the Lazio region of central Italy.
Minghella attended Sandown Grammar School and St. John's, Portsmouth. He graduated from the University of Hull, where he completed undergraduate and postgraduate courses, but eventually abandoned his doctoral thesis.^{[citation needed]}
His first piece of produced work was a 1975 stage adaptation of Gabriel Josipovici's Mobius the Stripper and it was his 1985 piece Whale Music that kickstarted his career. He made his directorial debut with a double bill of Samuel Beckett's Play and Happy Days. His first feature film as a director was A Little Like Drowning in 1978.

Cathy Tyson
Catherine "Cathy" Tyson (born 12 June 1965 in Kingston-upon-Thames, London) is an English stage, film and television actress.
The daughter of a Trinidadian barrister father and an English social worker mother, Tyson and her family moved to Liverpool when she was approximately two years old.
Tyson attended the Everyman Youth Theatre in her teens. She dropped out of college at 17 to pursue an acting career at Liverpool's Everyman Theatre, before joining the RSC in 1984.
Tyson's film debut was in Mona Lisa (1986) as Simone, an elegant mixed-race prostitute. Other films she did include Priest and The Serpent And The Rainbow. Probably her best-known television appearance was also as a prostitute, Carol Johnson, in the ITV series Band of Gold.
In 2007 Tyson joined the cast of two long-running television series. She played deputy headmistress Miss Gayle in the BBC One school drama Grange Hill, and featured in the popular ITV soap opera Emmerdale as single mother Andrea Hayworth.
Tyson played Herodia in BBC Three's Liverpool Nativity, a modern adaptation of the traditional Christmas story. Recorded as a live event in Liverpool city centre on 16 December 2007, it was broadcast several times over the Christmas period and repeated the following year.

Colin Cant
Colin Cant is a British television producer and director, best known for his work in the children's department of BBC Television. Within that department, he was for many years involved as both a director and producer of the long-running children's drama series Grange Hill, and also directed several acclaimed drama serials, including Moondial (1988), Dark Season (1991) and Century Falls (1993).
He has also worked in adult television, directing episodes of various popular series such as the police drama Juliet Bravo and Crown Court during the 1980s, and later working on the soap operas Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Francesca Martinez (born 1978) is an English stand-up comedienne and actress. She has toured internationally, including sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival, the Melbourne Comedy Festival and the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Martinez has performed in many countries including Ireland, South Africa, Canada, United States, where she gigged at Caroline's on Broadway, and at the 2008 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where she performed alongside Emma Thompson.
She is developing a feature documentary called What The Hell Is Normal?! which will see her travel around looking for a 'normal' person.
Before becoming a stand-up, Martinez appeared in the BBC children's drama serial Grange Hill for several years, and has acted in other drama series such as Casualty.

Gwyneth Powell
Gwyneth Powell (born 5 July 1946 in Levenshulme, Manchester) is an English actress who is most known for her portrayal of headmistress Bridget McCluskey in the BBC television series Grange Hill for eleven series between 1981 and 1991.

Powell originally trained as a teacher at Goldsmiths, University of London, but instead chose to act in repertory theatre. Her first major television role was in the 1971 LWT dystopian drama series, "The Guardians". She was a regular, if minor, player in many television dramas until being cast in Grange Hill, in which she played the "firm but fair" headmistress Bridget ("The Midget") McClusky for eleven years. Of her role, she said in 2008,
Eventually, however, Powell wanted to pursue other interests and gave the Grange Hill producers and writers a year to write McClusky out of the series. She bought the rights to E. M. Delafield's Diary of a Provincial Lady and adapted it as a self-financed one-woman show in Edinburgh, also touring the production.
Since then, Powell has appeared in other television programmes such as Heartbeat, A Touch of Frost and Father Brown, and in 2008, Echo Beach.

Iain Robertson
Iain Robertson (born 27 May 1981) is a BAFTA winning Scottish actor. He was once described by Barry Norman as "the best thing to come out of Scotland since whisky".
Star of the cult Glasgow gang film Small Faces, he is best known for his work in Grange Hill, 'The Debt Collector' alongside Billy Connolly, Sea of Souls with Bill Paterson and Dawn Steele, Steven Spielberg's Band of Brothers and more recently as Gash in the cult British comedy Rab C. Nesbitt.
Robertson's talent was described by Billy Connolly as 'Immense', having shared the same secondary school in Govan as Connolly, 'St Gerard's'. Robertson described growing up in Govan; "growing up in Govan put fire in my belly, made me push harder and also appreciate the things that have come my way".
Originally from Govan in Glasgow, Robertson grew up part of a family of seven in a two-bedroom tenement. He had no thoughts of becoming an actor until he received a report from his primary school teacher Mr O'Kane saying, 'this boy has a special aptitude for drama'. He joined a local dramatic arts group at the age of 11 and quickly set about producing his own play, co-written and directed by his friends, Leah Beattie, Kelly Mitchell and John Rennie. He soon looked around for further opportunities and noticed an advertisement offering scholarships to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. He was among 2,000 children to audition.

Jacqueline Boatswain
Jacqueline Boatswain (also known as Jacqui Boatswain) is a British actress, based in London.
She is best known for playing headmistress Mrs Bassinger in the long-running BBC school drama, Grange Hill, from 2003-2006. The character's first name has never been revealed, but according to the sign outside her head teacher's office it starts with "S". Mrs Bassinger was not seen during the 2007 series, her function in the programme taken over by Cathy Tyson as deputy head, Miss Gayle. It was not known if Boatswain would return to Grange Hill, however the show has now been cancelled.
In addition to Grange Hill, Boatswain has appeared in Casualty, and as a police custody sergeant in the BBC daytime drama Doctors.
She also has extensive stage experience.
She has also appeared in Life on Mars and The Royal.

Jan Needle
Jan Needle (Full name James Albert Needle) is an English author. He was born and grew up in Portsmouth on the South coast of England, coming from a family with strong naval and military connections. He has written over thirty novels, as well as books and plays for adults and children, books of criticism, cartoons and radio and television serials and series.
After studying to becoming a journalist and despite poor grades in English, he moved to the North-West of England at age 20 to work for the Daily Herald newspaper. At 25 he took a Drama degree course at Manchester University, quitting full time journalism after working for various papers. His first novel, Albeson and the Germans, was published in 1977.
His historical nautical series, the William Bentley novels, are known for showing the British Navy in a less favourable light than most fictional books in the genre tend to, and for removing some of the romantic gloss that is often attached to the genre.
He currently lives in Uppermill, Saddleworth, near Oldham and West Didsbury, Manchester in the Northwest of England, and has five children.

Justin Lee Collins
Justin Lee Collins, commonly known as JLC, (born 28 July 1974) is an English comedian and television presenter, known for his strong West Country accent, shaggy appearance, and colourful shirts.
Collins is often associated with nostalgia programmes, such as Bring Back..., in which he discusses cult films, music and television programmes. Other notable works include his breakthrough show The Friday Night Project, which he co-presented with Alan Carr, its Sunday spin-off, and The Convention Crasher. In recent years he's presented travel documentaries for channel 5, like Justin Lee Collins: Turning Japanese.
In 2010 Collins made an unsuccessful campaign to represent Britain and Ireland in the annual Eurovision Song Contest with a song written by Ronan Keating. In the same year he also helped launch the Bristol charity Shine Together, which aims to benefit patients at Southmead Hospital.
Collins was born on 28 July 1974 in Southmead, Bristol, to working class parents, Anita and Danny Collins, a self-employed electrician. Collins is an only child. In 1990, Collins left education at Speedwell Technology College (now known as Bristol Brunel Academy) at the age of 15 with no qualifications and started working at Marks & Spencer as a warehouse operative. Three years later he was accepted into Filton College and earned a BTEC in performing arts and drama, thanks to his father, who urged him to pursue his real passion.

Laura Sadler
Laura Ruth Sadler (25 December 1980 – 19 June 2003) was an English actress best known for her role as nurse Sandy Harper in the BBC One hospital drama series Holby City playing the role for three years until her death on 19 June 2003.
Sadler was born in Ascot, Berkshire, and took up television acting as a young girl. She was spotted as a future talent at the age of six by Dustin Hoffman, who had seen her in a play and asked to meet her. Before joining the cast of Holby City, her best-known role had been as the character Judi Jeffreys in the children's television series Grange Hill from 1997 to 1999. Her Grange Hill character was killed after slipping and falling out of a burning building, tragically paralleling her real life death four years later. Laura also played the part of Skirty Marm in a BBC1 children's comedy, Belfry Witches. Skirty Marm and her friend Old Noshie (Lucy Davis) were teenage witches banished to Earth from Witch Island, settling in a sleepy village where they caused mischief.

Phil Redmond
Phil Redmond CBE (born 10 June 1949) is an English television producer and screenwriter.
He is well-known for creating several popular television series such as Grange Hill (BBC One, 1978–2008), Brookside (Channel 4, 1982–2003) and Hollyoaks (Channel 4, 1995—). For over twenty years he also ran his own independent production company, Mersey Television, before selling the company off in 2005. Redmond also created the daytime legal drama, The Courtroom which was canceled after 38 episodes.
In 1989, Redmond was awarded the post of Honorary Professor of Media Studies at Liverpool John Moores University, where he is encouraging a new, practically-orientated, media studies course.^{[citation needed]}
In November 2010 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Chester.
He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to drama.^{[citation needed]}
In February 2012 Redmond declared in interest in running for the role of Elected Mayor of Liverpool.

Robert Leeson
Robert Arthur Leeson (born 1928 in Cheshire) is a British author, mainly known for his children's books. Before becoming a writer, he worked as Literary Editor of the left-wing British newspaper the Morning Star. He is a prolific writer, having had over 70 books for young people published between 1973 and 2003. His books include several historical novels, such as Maroon Boy (1974), The Third Class Genie (1975) (a humorous fantasy novel) and the science-fiction Time Rope (1986) and Zania Experiment (1993) series. Leeson also wrote social realist novels such as It's My Life (1980) about a teenage girl who has to look after her family after her mother walks out on them.Silver's Revenge is a humorous sequel to Treasure Island, and Candy for the King is a fairytale about a giant influenced by Voltaire's Candide. Leeson's Reading and Righting: the past,present and future of Fiction for the young (1985) is a history of children's literature. He has also written for radio, television and the theatre.

Sean Arnold
Sean Arnold (born 30 January 1941, Gloucestershire) is an English actor.
He is best-known for his roles as Mr Llewelyn in Grange Hill in the 1970s and 1980s, and as Barney Crozier in the 1980s BBC television series Bergerac. He later appeared as the Chief Constable in Merseybeat.
Sean Arnold played Commander Telson in the 1981 BBC Radio 4 science fiction serial Earthsearch and the 1982 sequel Earthsearch II.

Stuart Organ
Stuart Organ is a British actor.
He is best known for his portrayal of the character Mr. Robson in the children's television drama Grange Hill. Stuart portrayed the series' longest-serving teacher, arriving in 1988 as the new head of PE. In 1998 he finally landed the headmaster's job, but left the series in 2003 soon after production of Grange Hill transferred to Liverpool.
Prior to Grange Hill, Stuart appeared as Kevin Cross in the Mersey TV soap opera Brookside, and played Bazin in the Doctor Who story Dragonfire in 1987. Since then, he has appeared in a variety of roles on T.V., including Monk, a flasher who exposed himself to Anna and yet was defended by Miles in This Life; Richard Thornton, who stalked P.C. Sam Nixon across a double episode Special in The Bill; and Leighton Peters, a top Civil Servant who was responsible for the downfall of Anthony Calf's regular in a double episode of Holby City.
More recently, he has been concentrating on work in the theatre. His roles have included Guy Burgess in An Englishman Abroad (York Theatre Royal, 2003); Egeus in The Comedy of Errors (Sheffield Crucible, 2004); George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Queens Theatre, Hornchurch, 2005); Robert in Blue/Orange (Ipswich, 2006); and Serge in 'Art' (York Theatre Royal, 2006). He then returned to the Queens Theatre, to play Major Powell in their 2007 play "Corpse".

Todd Carty
Todd Carty (born 31 August 1963) is an Irish actor and director, who has grown up on television screens in a variety of roles. His stage work has varied from pantomime to serious drama, as well as radio plays, voiceovers, commercials, narrations, and films. He is best known for his roles as Tucker Jenkins in Grange Hill, Mark Fowler in EastEnders, and villainous policeman Gabriel Kent in The Bill.
Born in the city of Limerick in 1963, Carty's family emigrated to England when he was a child and he spent his early years in Kilburn, North London, before moving to Harrow, Middlesex, when he was 8 years old.
Carty was educated at the Phildene Stage School, a co-educational independent school in Chiswick in West London.
Carty's first television appearance in the UK was in an advertisement for Woolworths at the age of four. He also had other advertising roles, including one with Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee for the "Green Cross Code".
Carty made his first stage appearance at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane, as the young Lionel in Lionel Bart's autobiographical musical Lionel; however, his television career in his youth was mostly defined by his role as Tucker Jenkins in Phil Redmond's popular BBC drama Grange Hill (1978–1982), and the subsequent spin off series Tucker's Luck (1983–1985).

Grange Hill is a British television drama series originally made by the BBC. The show began in 1978 on BBC1 and was one of the longest running programmes on British television. It was created by Phil Redmond who is also responsible for the Channel 4 dramas Brookside and Hollyoaks; other notable production team members down the years have included producer Colin Cant and script editor Anthony Minghella.

On 6 February 2008, it was announced that Grange Hill would be cancelled after 30 years^[1]^[2]^[3] and the last episode was shown on 15 September 2008.^[4]

List of Grange Hill episodes

The drama was centred on the fictional comprehensive school of Grange Hill in the (equally fictitious) borough of North London called "Northam" (although when filming moved to Liverpool in 2003, it ceased to have any specific location), and follows the lives of the students as they progress through school. The series was to have originally been called "Grange Park", which would go on to be used as the name of the school in another Redmond creation, the Channel 4 soap opera Brookside (1982–2003).

There appears to be no connection between the fictional Grange Hill and the area of the same name in the Northeast London suburb of Chigwell that gives its name to Grange Hill tube station.

Series history [link]

Grange Hill was originally conceived by ATV comedy writer Phil Redmond, who first approached various television companies with the idea in 1975, unsuccessfully. In 1976, he managed to sell the idea to the BBC, and the drama executive Anna Home gave the series a trial run of nine episodes, the first being broadcast on 8 February 1978.^[5]^[6]

From the start, the series caused controversy for its real-life, gritty portrayal of school life, rather than the more idealistic school dramas that preceded it. Redmond has said that he wasn't really able to start pushing the boundaries until later series.^{[citation needed]} This led to Redmond being summoned to lunch by BBC bosses and forced to agree that there would be no further series unless he toned things down. Grange Hill's highest profile period was undoubtedly the mid-late 1980s. One of the most famous storylines during this time was that of Zammo McGuire and his addiction to heroin. This storyline ran over two series (1986–87) and focused on Zammo's descent into drugs and how it strained his relationship with girlfriend Jackie and friend Kevin. The show's other favourite characters during this period were Gonch and Hollo played by John Holmes and Bradley Sheppard. During his time at the school (1985–89) Gonch took part in many moneymaking schemes, most unsuccessful. There was a comedic element to the duo's relationship that worked well with viewers. Script editor Anthony Minghella, who worked on the series for several years during the 1980s, later won an Academy Award for Best Director for the film The English Patient in 1996.

During the 1990s, Grange Hill did not receive the same media attention it did just a few years previously. The teachers were now equals in the narrative with their personal lives taking up almost as much time as those of the pupils. In 1994, two characters were introduced with disabilities, Denny Roberts (Lisa Hammond), who suffered from dwarfism, and Rachel Burns (Francesca Martinez), who had cerebral palsy. Both characters were presented as "one of the gang" and hated any special treatment because of their circumstances. This prompted the BFI's 2002 publication The Hill And Beyond to comment that Grange Hill had perhaps become politically correct.^[7] Beginning on 4 April 1993, to celebrate Grange Hill's 15th anniversary, the first fifteen series of Grange Hill were repeated during CBBC's Sunday, and later Saturday morning slots on BBC1 and BBC2. The repeats ended with Series 16 in 1999. Interest in Grange Hill renewed in the late 1990s and the series celebrated its 20th anniversary with the introduction of sinister Scottish bully Sean Pearce (Iain Robertson), who carried a knife and slashed the face of a female classmate. Cast member Laura Sadler, who was heavily involved in this storyline, died after falling out of a building in June 2003; four years earlier her Grange Hill character Judi Jeffreys was killed after slipping and falling out of the window of a burning storeroom in the school.

By 2001, the series was almost entirely issue-led and the decision to tackle the subject of rape upset some parents. But when Phil Redmond took over production of Grange Hill in 2003, his plan was to get the show back to its roots and the issues were toned down as Redmond skewed the show towards a younger audience. In early 2006, it was announced a film of Grange Hill was to be released in late 2007 focusing on the lives of former pupils^[8] but has not yet appeared.

Grange Hill returned on 14 April 2008 with its final series, including a return of the original theme music. Series 31 returned to BBC1 after the 2007 series was shown exclusively on the CBBC.^[9]

Production history [link]

For its first 25 years Grange Hill was produced in-house by the BBC, then the show was made independently for the corporation by Mersey TV, the production house founded by Redmond (and later renamed as Lime Pictures), hence the reason for the production move.

Television Centre years: 1978–85 [link]

Grange Hill was originally filmed at real schools in London. The first of these would be Kingsbury High School in North London, which was used as the Grange Hill setting for the first two series. For the series 3, in 1980, exterior filming moved to Willesden High School in Willesden Green, which was similar in looks to Kingsbury and was also situated in a residential area of the capital. In 1981, Grange Hill moved to Holborn College (now Fulham Preparatory School) in Greyhound Road, Hammersmith. This school looked very different from the two that had been used previously, and it was also in a built-up area of London. Holborn College was the longest serving of the "real schools", remaining on screen until 1985. Up to and including 1985, studio scenes were shot at BBC Television Centre in London.

Elstree years: 1985–2002 [link]

Popular rumour suggests Grange Hill was forced to move between real schools so often because fans disrupted filming. In 1985, this problem was resolved when the BBC purchased the former ATV studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. The studios would become known as BBC Elstree Centre and from Series 8, some exterior filming was switched to the closed Elstree set. A 1960s office block, Neptune House, would double as Grange Hill's "lower school".

The change was explained on screen with an elaborate storyline whereby Grange Hill merged with rival schools Brookdale and Rodney Bennett to form a new school, Grange Hill. In Series 8 the merger had taken place and Grange Hill operated as a split-site school; the former Rodney Bennett building (Neptune House) being the lower school and the original Grange Hill building (still Holborn College) the upper school.

In Series 9, the Upper School building was condemned after a fire, allowing production of Grange Hill to fully move to Elstree including studio work. Grange Hill was, at this time, made as an outside broadcast in the same way as its stablemate, EastEnders. New producer Diana Kyle switched filming to a single camera format from 1999, at which time a filmic effect was also added, to the displeasure of some fans.

A new school entrance set was unveiled in 1990 and remained in use until 2002, with cosmetic modifications along the way.^[10] However, as the 1990s progressed more use was made of real schools including the Nicholas Hawksmoor School and Bushey Meads School, and St Audrey's School in Hatfield. The headmistress of Bushey Meads School was said to be delighted Grange Hill was moving to Liverpool in 2002.

Liverpool years: 2003–08 [link]

Early in 2002 it was announced that Grange Hill creator Phil Redmond had signed a deal for his production company Mersey TV to produce the next three series of the programme. Production moved to Mersey TV's studios in Childwall, Liverpool, from Series 26 onwards and for the first time in many years, the appearance of Grange Hill School itself would change radically. On screen, an explosion ripped through the school at the end of Series 25 and during Series 26, tarpaulins covered most of the new "school" to mask the "fire damage".

Phil Redmond originally wanted children from all over the country to participate in the relaunched Grange Hill, having a variety of regional accents in the series as opposed to just the London area voices, which had become associated with the programme. In the event new characters were almost exclusively cast from the north west of England due to the logistics of the child employment laws.

Real schools in the locality were also used including Croxteth Comprehensive, Holly Lodge Girls' School and St Hilda's C of E High School in Liverpool.^[11] In 2005, the former Brookside Parade set at Mersey TV was redeveloped to benefit Grange Hill and the new "Creative Learning Centre" subsequently became an integral part of the show. With the cancellation of Grange Hill, the CLC exterior set has now been turned into skateboard park set for Grange Hill's stablemate show Hollyoaks while the former Grange Hill school frontage has become a permanent exterior for Hollyoaks High.

Issues covered [link]

The programme has covered many controversial storylines, ranging from students throwing benches into the swimming pool (1978; as a result of which, following letters of complaint from teachers and parents, the episode was withdrawn from the repeat season), rape (2001), heroin addiction (1986), Asperger syndrome (2001), knife crime (1998) and attempted suicide (2005), prompting many complaints from viewers. Grange Hill broke new ground by the inclusion of a gay teacher, Mr Brisley, who was in the cast from 1992 to 1999.

In 2005, the character Holly Parsons was wrongly heralded as Grange Hill's first deaf character. While it is true that the actress who played her, Rebecca-Anne Withey, is the series' first deaf cast member, Grange Hill first featured a deaf character, Eric Wallace, in 1985.

During the final series in 2008, Grange Hill cut back on the harder-hitting issues and concentrated more on the early years of secondary school.^[12] The final series, though concentrating mainly on lighter aspects of school life, still dealt with some social issues; a Year 6 pupil battled with dyslexia while it turned out school bully Chloe Moore had to care for a disabled parent.

"The Grange"[link]

In 2007 BBC Children's ordered major changes to Grange Hill so that it fitted in with the new requirement that all programmes under the CBBC banner must appeal to an audience age 12 and under — younger than the traditional age group for Grange Hill, which was the same as to slightly younger than the secondary school characters. Under a deal signed in 2005 Lime Pictures was contracted to produce Grange Hill until 2008, so changes began to be made.

For Series 31, Lime Pictures creative director Tony Wood set about the task of meeting CBBC's new requirements. He shifted much of the action away from general school life to "The Grange", the school's multimedia learning centre, which was given a radical makeover and became as much a "hang out" as a learning resource. The emphasis was now on younger characters with a group of Year 6 pupils regularly coming to use The Grange from primary school; storylines were much lighter and fantasy sequences were introduced. One episode, "Boarderman", saw a Year 7 pupil become a masked skateboarding superhero campaigning for an end to the school's ban on skateboarding. In another, "Veggin' out", a girl and her classmates smuggled animals from a local petting farm into school, believing they were destined for slaughter.

The Observer reported on 13 January 2008 that the BBC's intention was to shift the action away from Grange Hill School and into The Grange completely.^[13] Phil Redmond responded in the same article by calling for Grange Hill to be scrapped, saying the programme had been "robbed of its original purpose". Redmond had been planning a hard-hitting storyline to return Grange Hill to its gritty origins in Series 31, and although he signed off the changes he believed it wasn't his show any more.

Cancellation [link]

On 6 February 2008, the BBC announced Grange Hill was to be axed after exactly 30 years. The announcement was made by CBBC controller Anne Gilchrist just two days before the show's official 30th birthday.

Grange Hill ended on Monday 15 September 2008 with a further return appearance by Todd Carty, in which Tucker persuaded his nephew Togger Johnson not to give up on school like he did. Other than that there would be no spectacular conclusion; characters simply walked out of the school gates after their end-of-term prom, an almost mirror-image of how pupils walked into the school gates in the very first episode.

In 2006, the BBC had announced big plans for the show's 30th birthday including special programming on BBC2, possible repeats and a lavish reunion of former stars during 2008.^[14] But in the event, none of these celebrations happened aside from a special Radio 4 programme Grange Hill: Soap Pioneer broadcast on 4 September 2008. The last Grange Hill was watched by 500,000 viewers.

Seven months later, Ashes to Ashes paid homage to the series in its episode 2.1 (airing 20 April 2009). In that episode, the time-travelling protagonist, DI Alex Drake, sees her daughter Molly incorporated into an episode of Grange Hill on the evening of 3 or 5 April 1982 [calendar indicates 3 April; the news report was from 5 April]. Molly (in new footage) tells headmistress Bridget McClusky (appearing as archival footage and Gwyneth Powell's newly recorded audio) that she and Tucker got into a fight when Tucker said her mother Alex was dead.

Spin-offs [link]

The show spawned a successful spin-off called Tucker's Luck (1983–1985), which ran for three series, and furthered the acting career of Todd Carty. The three series saw the two lead characters (Tucker and Alan) finding work. The 1986 cast released Grange Hill: The Album, with two singles: "Just Say No" (tying in with a character's heroin addiction) and "You Know the Teacher (Smash Head)". The album was re-released on CD on 12 November 2007, as part of the BBC's 30th Anniversary celebrations.

In 2005, Justin Lee Collins reunited some of the cast members from the 1980s in the documentary Bring Back...Grange Hill.

Theme music [link]

The original theme used from 1978–1990 (albeit an updated recording from 1988–1990), which returned for the final series from 2007–2008, was "Chicken Man" by Alan Hawkshaw, a track from the Themes International music library composed one hour before it was recorded during a session in Munich, Germany. Grange Hill was the first programme to use it as a theme followed by the popular quiz show Give Us a Clue, whose makers used it from 1979–1982, it despite it already being played on Grange Hill. Give Us A Clue used a less dynamic custom arrangement more in keeping with the style of light entertainment programming.

"Chicken Man" was used as the Grange Hill theme until 1990, when a new, more contemporary-sounding theme was written for the series by Peter Moss. Moss had previously written some special hip-hop music for a storyline in Series 11 of Grange Hill. His theme tune lasted until 2007, although as the years progressed less and less of it was heard as the opening titles got increasingly shorter, with the final version being no more than 12 seconds long. For the final series, an abbreviated version of "Chicken Man" was reinstated as the main theme.

The last four notes of the original theme song were heard when Brookside, one of Phil Redmond's other TV series, aired its final episode in November 2003.

Mr Starling appeared only once during Series 1: the authority figure most regularly seen during this time was the Head of First Year, Mrs Monroe (Dorothea Philips). Mr Llewelyn did not appear on screen during the 1980 series: the day-to-day running of the school was left to the highly competent but much put-upon deputy head Mr Keating (Robert Hartley), who was also deputy head under Mrs McClusky until 1984. Similarly, Mr McNab was never seen at all during the mid-1990s; the most senior authority figure being Mr Robson who at this point was deputy head. Mr Robson himself did not appear on screen during Series 27, even though he was still headmaster for the early part of the series. Mrs McClusky, perhaps Grange Hill's best known head teacher, was demoted to deputy head temporarily in 1985 having had to reapply, unsuccessfully, for her post following the merger of Grange Hill with Brookdale and Rodney Bennett. When the new head, Mr Humphries, was killed in a road accident the following year, Mrs McClusky was again acting head and her permanent headship was later confirmed.

The final headmistress of Grange Hill was Miss Gayle, introduced as deputy head in the 2007 series although she did not appear in Series 31.

On 19 June 2003 former cast member Laura Sadler who played student Judi Jeffreys for two years from 1997 to 1999 fell to her death at her home in London, her character was killed after slipping and falling out of a burning building, tragically paralleling her real life death four years later. An episode was later dedicated in her memory. She was 22.

During the 1980s, when Grange Hill merchandising was at its height and the series arguably at its most popular, a number of annuals and novels were published.

Eight annuals were published from 1981 to 1988.^[15]

Comic strip adventures appeared in the short-lived BEEB magazine, which portrayed new stories, and the longer running Fast Forward, magazine which loosely followed the early 90's series. Additional comic strips occurred in School Fun and in the Radio Times. Grange Hill had its own dedicated magazine, but this only lasted two issues, although there was a holiday special too.

In 1987 a video game was made for 8-bit computers including the Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC.^[16]

Video & laserdisc release [link]

The first and second series were originally released on the new technology of home video in the early 1980s. Both videos were edited to remove some storylines and thereby shorten running times, given the duration of early videocassettes. The front of the box for the series 1 video features a cast photograph (and small photos of specific individual characters) from series 3, as some characters pictured therein do not feature in that series. The series 2 videocassette box art features a similarly styled front cover, but with a cast photo from the correct year.

These abridged versions of the first two series of the show were also released on Betamax, Video 2000 and laserdisc around the same time.

DVD release [link]

Two DVD box sets covering the first four series were released on 12 November 2007. There are no subtitles, episodes are in 4:3 (the original format) and both box sets come with a booklet detailing each episode. Some episodes have been edited to remove pop music tracks that could not be cleared for DVD release^{[citation needed]}. There are currently no known plans to release any further series on DVD^{[citation needed]}.
