The Future of the Film Industry
Webzilla vs. Hollywood The Economics of Entertainment is a very popular course at the Olin Business School where executives from the music and movie industry -- Andrew Karpen, President of Focus Features, Barry Weiss, Chairman of RCA/Jive Label Group, and Jon Feltheimer, Chief Executive Officer of Lions Gate Entertainment -- engage students in discussions about issues challenging the entertainment business. Figuring out the new revenue models with the proliferation of free content on the internet is top of the agenda. Karpen and professor Glenn MacDonald discuss the future of the film industry in this video.

Russia's Underground Film Industry (Documentary | Part 1/3)
We went to Russia to learn about "Parallel Cinema", the 1980s' experimental film movement that involved violence, surrealism, and a lot of vodka. Watch the rest here! bit.ly bit.ly For 60 years, Russian film was dominated by the state-approved imagery of Socialist Realism: stark scenes of the proletariat; working, farming and soldiering. Making movies outside this milieu meant risking life and limb at the hands of the KGB. When the Soviet Union collapsed, and that threat diminished, Russian filmmakers released six decades of pent-up creative energy. The films that emerged were an insane mish mash of booze, violence, surrealism, and insanity. Thus Parallel Cinema was born. To learn more about this bizarre and wonderful school of film-making, Vice's Shane Smith travels to Moscow to interview the motley cast of characters that founded Russian Parallel Cinema. We meet Gleb and Igor Aleinikov, two of Parallel Cinema's most prolific creators; Oleg Kulik, who spent a year as a dog; Andre Silvestrov and Pavel Liabazov, founders of Alcho-Cinema; and notorious "Necro-Realist" Yevgeni Yufit. Learn about this truly unique filmic tradition that, given Russian's present volatility, may not exist for much longer. euronews Life - Flourishing Thai film industry braces for new epic
www.euronews.com Leonardo di Caprio, Roger Moore and Ewan McGregor have one thing in common -- they have all starred in movies filmed in Thailand. But not only do foreign productions have success here, the home grown film industry is also attracting film fans to cinemas in their scores - we'll go behind the scenes in this edition of Thai Life. "Leonardo di Caprio, Roger Moore and Ewan McGregor have one thing in common -- they've all been on set in Thailand. In the third part of our series of Thai Life, we'll take a look behind the scenes of a Thai film set visiting the exclusive production of "The Legend of King Naresuan." The five-part historical drama is one of the biggest and most expensive productions in Thai film history. It's about the liberation of Thailand (then Siam) from the Burmese by King Naresuan in the 16th century. The handsome officer Wanchana Sawasdee makes a dashing king in the movie. In real life he is a colonel in the Royal Thai army. For him - this change of scene was a real challenge. "People always say its difficult to act with children, special effects, security harnesses, and animals. It is indeed difficult to put everything together in the same scene. So we need great teamwork and good understanding amongst everyone." The epic film is shot in the middle of an active military base at Kanchanaburi, northeast of Bangkok. The renowned Thai director Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol had to coordinate more than 5000 actors and extras. Not an easy task ...

Condoms, Porn, and LA's Measure B: The Most Bizarre Ballot Initiative of 2012
On November 6, voters in Los Angeles County, California will get a chance to vote on whether actors in porn movies filmed in LA county must wear condoms and practice safe sex on camera. The Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act - also known as Measure B - is a response to ongoing stories about outbreaks of sexually transmitted diseases among workers in one of Southern California's most lucrative industries. "Self regulation has failed miserably when it comes to the porn industry," says Michael Weinstein of the Aids Healthcare Foundation, one of the main backers of Measure B. "This isn't the government's place," counters Steven Hirsch of Vivid Entertainment, one of the country's leading producers of X-rated fare. "In a time when we have huge budget deficits, [county officials] are going to take their time and energy to figure out how to police an industry that does a fine job of policing itself." Reason TV takes an in-depth look at one of the most heated - and controversial - regulatory battles ever put to a vote. About 5:40 minutes. Produced by Sharif Matar. Camera by Matar, Paul Detrick, and Zach Weissmueller. Narrated by Tracy Oppenheimer. Visit www.reason.com for downloadable versions.
