Social Exclusion & Youth Justice (Kate's Story)
A short introduction video I made on behalf of Durham University (UK) when I was at the University of Victoria (Canada). It's an anonymous but true case study surrounding the reasons why a young girl found herself in custody. I think it beg's the question of whether our welfare system in the UK truly works for young people or children, or if it only marginalises them further and sometimes even "pushes" them into offending behaviour. The song is "Who will sing me Lullaby's" by Kate Rusby. It's the live version. If you or someone close to you has been a victim of or witness to a crime, you can call Victim Support on 0845 30 30 900 (UK number) If you are a young carer you can find useful information at www.youngcarers.net

EU's unemployed youth threatened by social exclusion
Young people have the highest unemployment rate in the EU, an average of 20 percent. That's twice the percentage seen in the whole working population. In some countries, like Spain and Greece, that figure reaches about 40 percent. These numbers threaten to marginalize Europe's young people. Officials and experts delivered this message in Brussels. Press TV Yaldaz Sadakova reports from Brussels.

Social exclusion in Brazil
Social exclusion is probably the worst problem that exists in Brazilian society. This exclusion can be found from various forms. There are beaches for rich only, to middle class only and poor only. The best universities, which are free, are places where the vast majority of students are from affluent social classes. The same is happens with shopping centers. These shopping centers and services that could be an area of integration, actually, just reproducing and enhancing the social and economic inequality in Brazil. These islands are places where the middle class has the false impression that they are safe, that they are protected. But this is only an illusion that reflects the urban decay of the major Brazilian cities. And unfortunately, this trend of building shopping malls is arriving in small and medium sized cities. Finally, the shopping centers are just another reflection of the perverse logic of exclusion in Brazil. www.instablogs.com

Social exclusion in southern Yemen
They are punished for behaviour that's said to bring shame on their families, and the price can be severe. It could be theft, drugs, sex outside marriage or just marriage without the familys consent, but for some Yemeni women, such issues will remain with them for their whole life. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall travelled to southern Yemen to visit one woman whose determination to help those she sees as victims of injustice is making a real difference.

Local and regional responses to poverty and social exclusion
In the context of the 'European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion', the Committee of the Regions invited local and regional authorities, organisations and EU institutions to exchange good practice and expertise in the fight against poverty and social exclusion at local level. Against the backdrop of increasing unemployment and public deficits, the knowledge on innovative approaches to social problems will become more important for Europe's regions and cities. In the European Union, about 80 million or 16% of the population live in poverty. This is of particular concern for local and regional authorities, as they have basic responsibility for framing, funding and carrying out policies designed to guarantee the integration of people who are socially, economically or culturally excluded. Local and regional aspects of the fight against poverty and social exclusion have been subject to recent Opinions of the Committee of the Regions, in particular as regards local aspects and lasting effects of related EU initiatives. On the eve of its Plenary Session on 9 and 10 June 2010, the Committee of the Regions invited the Members of the Committee of the Regions, other interested regional and local representatives and experts to discuss initiatives and good practice in the fight against poverty and social exclusion in order to increase awareness of the regional and local level when it comes to formulate European responses. To facilitate exchange of good practices, the ...

Italy's Margins - Social Exclusion in Photography and Film 1860-2010
Exhibition: ITALY'S MARGINS: Social Exclusion in Photography and Film Curated and with an inaugural lecture by David Forgacs (Guido and Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimò Professor in Contemporary Italian Studies, NYU) Inaugural Lecture: Italy seen at its margins: visual culture and social exclusion since 1861 The margins of a country are real places - the poor peripheral areas of cities, overseas colonies, 'backward' rural areas, Romani camps, fast-track removal centres and many others - but at the same time they are places that are imagined and produced as margins by particular processes of definition and representation. A place becomes a margin because it is viewed and defined as such from a more powerful and prestigious centre of observation. Those who do the viewing and defining are equipped (depending on the historical period) with notebooks, tape recorders, still cameras, movie cameras or video cameras, and they use these technologies to capture and reproduce images of those on the margins. The power relations inherent in these structures of observation and representation are generally not reversible, or are only partially reversible. Britain's ageing men facing social exclusion
The growing numbers of old men in Britain's ageing society are facing social exclusion. There are men who are pensioners, divorced, have experienced a family breakdown, or were not given custody rights after a divorce are facing Isolation. Because of this, loneliness further invigorates as they have no one to talk to and share their problems with. As a result, Britain is likely to face a growing problem of "home alone". This worrying picture is coming to the fore with the aged males who are struggling to hold on to social and family ties. Whereas, problem is not as grave with women as it is with men, because women are always comfortable with participating in social groups however, men find it harder to join in. This is only because men tend to have weaker social links and majority of group activities are female-focused. Even men who join social activities are outnumbered by women, which is quite intimidating. In such a situation, isolation adds more to the woes of Oldies and men over the age of 80 who live alone as well as those who are recently bereaved are particularly at risk. www.instablogs.com

World Social Work Day 2010 - Social Workers in Europe Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion
This video was prepared by the International Federation of Social Workers, European Executive on the occasion of World Social Work Day 2010 as a clear statement of the values and mission of Social Workers who work towards social change leading to a dignified life and social justice for all. People are making changes in their lives to improve their quality of life every day across the world - and social workers are there helping them. World Social Work Day is a celebration of these achievements and an opportunity to highlight what work still has to be done for peoples rights to be respected. IFSW President, Dr David N Jones, comments that Wherever there is extreme poverty, lack of basic needs like food, water and shelter, the trafficking and abuse of people across countries or serious family problems in affluent societies, you will find social workers alongside people, helping them to make changes in their lives. The 2010 social work world conference will show how social work will develop its contribution to building people-centred and sustainable social progress and social change. World social work day gives us an opportunity to celebrate this crucial work. Read more on: www.ifsw.org
