Avro Triplane 1911 (Replica)
Alliot Vernon Roe was one of Britain's most famous early pioneers and later set up the famous AVRO company. From 1910 he started designing and building a series of triplane aeroplanes. He decided on the triplane layout, rather than the more conventional monoplane or biplane, as the triplane layout provided the extra lift that he required. Four triplanes were built and provided valuable experience for later aircraft designs. Both the Avro 504 and the Tutor can trace their ancestry back to the Triplane IV. All have high aspect ration wings (meaning that the wings are much longer than they are wide - this helps to produce more lift). The Avro Triplane is a replica built by the Hampshire Aeroplane Club at Eastleigh, Southampton for the film 'Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines'. During the making of this film it was found to be a very impressive flyer and so the Trustees decided that it should be acquired to add to the Collection. During the winter of 2000/1, the Avro Triplane was completely stripped down and restored. During this time the opportunity was taken to reapply the markings that the Triplane wore in 'Those Magnificent Men'. Height: 9ft 0in Length: 30ft 0in Wingspan: 32ft 0in Engine: one 105hp Cirrus Hermes II Max. AVRO Lancaster Production
The Avro Lancaster was a British four-engine Second World War bomber aircraft made initially by Avro for the British Royal Air Force (RAF). It first saw active service in 1942, and together with the Handley-Page Halifax it was one of the main heavy bombers of the RAF, the Royal Canadian Air Force and squadrons from other Commonwealth and European countries serving with RAF Bomber Command. The "Lanc" or "Lankie," as it became affectionately known, became the most famous and most successful of the Second World War night bombers, "delivering 608612 tons of bombs in 156000 sorties." Although the Lancaster was primarily a night bomber, it excelled in many other roles including daylight precision bombing, and gained worldwide renown as the "Dam Buster" used in the 1943 Operation Chastise raids on Germany's Ruhr Valley dams. The origins of the Lancaster lie in a twin-engined bomber design powered by Rolls-Royce Vulture engines submitted to Specification P.13/36 which was for a new generation of twin-engined medium bombers. The resulting aircraft was the Avro Manchester, which, although a capable aircraft, was troubled by the unreliability of the Vulture and withdrawn from service in 1942, by which point 200 aircraft had been built. Avro's chief designer, Roy Chadwick, was already working on an improved Manchester design using four of the more reliable but less powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines on a larger wing. The aircraft was initially designated Avro Type 683 Manchester III ...

Avro Lancaster Bomber - Rare WWII Colour Film of the Lancaster
DVDs featuring the Avro Lancaster are available at www.avhouse.ca Probably the most famous allied bomber of World War Two was the Avro Lancaster of Bomber Command. It was born out of the failure of the twin engine Manchester bomber. Avro took the basically sound Manchester airframe and redesigned it to take four Rolls Royce Merlin engines. Like so many good planes the essence of the Lancaster's success was its simplicity and robust structure. It was also remarkably adaptable as evidenced by its many roles such as the famous Dambuster raid through to the carrying of the 11 ton Grand Slam bomb. Another highlight of the Lancaster's career was the sinking of the German battleship TIRPITZ on November 12, 1944 in a Norwegian Fjord. For the attack on the TIRPITZ, 31 aircraft from number 617 and number 9 Squadrons took part in the raid. Each aircraft carried a 12000 pound Tallboy bomb. Even though the Lancaster proved to be one of the most successful bombers of the war, this success did not guarantee immunity from losses. Of the over 7300 Lancasters built during the war more than 3600 were lost on operations. Number 419 Squadron alone lost 129 aircraft, more than fives its normal squadron strength. But more disturbing was the tremendous loss of life, especially in Bomber Command. Of the over 17000 RCAF casualties during the war, close to 10000 of the deaths were sustained in squadrons assigned to Bomber Command. Overall, more than 60% of the bomber flight crews did not survive ...

Two Avro Ansons landed together after mid-air 1940
The mid-air collision of two Avro Anson aircraft, on a training flight from No. 2 Service Flying Training School (2SFTS) based at Wagga Wagga, resulted in this dramatic and successful crash landing. On 29 September 1940, the two Ansons of 2 Service Flying Training School were flying at near 1000 ft in the Brocklesbury area. N4876 (piloted by L. Fuller, observer I. Sinclair) and L9162 (J. Hewson, observer L. Fraser) lost sight of each other. The first aircraft descended onto the other. The lower aircraft's turret became lodged in the wing root of N4876, and much of L9162's cabin was crushed. Both port engines were making strange noises. The occupants of the lower aircraft bailed out, Hewson being obstructed by the damage and slightly injured. In the upper aircraft, Fuller decided a forced landing was possible, and ordered his observer out. Southwest of Brocklesbury he brought the two aircraft down, locked together. He was uninjured. N4876 was surprisingly undamaged and continued in use after repairs, but L9162 was only fit to continue as an instructional airframe. Fuller went on to fly with the RAAF in Europe and won the DFM. Unfortunately he was killed at East Sale on 18 March 1944 when he was hit by a bus while riding a bike.

Merlin Madness - Just Jane - Engine Music - Avro Lancaster
For all those nuts who think the only music is Merlin music. I hope it placates your insatiable appetite and stops you pestering me for more. The engines on this Lancaster were often fitted to Spitfires, Hurricanes and numerous other aircraft during WWII. Comments disabled due too much spam! Video responses are still available.

AVRO VULCAN XH558 - WADDINGTON AIRSHOW 2011 (airshowvision)
Airshowvision proudly present the awesome ex. cold war nuclear bomber - the Avro Vulcan B2 XH558. This aircraft was saved from the scrapheap by the Vulcan to the Sky trust, headed by Robert Pleming, and after years of restoration and fund raising, made its airshow return at Waddington exactly 3 years ago. This display is flown by top Vulcan display pilot Kevin Rumins, who easily otperforms all the other vulcan display pilots, with his crowd thrilling wingover manouvers. Waddington airshow 2011 wasn't a classic, but this aircraft wowed the crowds and upstaged the rather disappointing USAF Thunderbirds, who still haven't discovered coloured smoke it seems? This video is uploaded especially for my good friend Jim Connoly, ex Vulcan serviceman, walking encyclopedia on the Vulcan and extremely nice chap. Enjoy this fine aircraft while it still flies, and if you wish to donate to the upkeep, please visit the vulcan website for details...

Avro Vulcan XH558 Take Off Howl & Vulcan Display
To read more on this, please visit thevulcanbomber.blogspot.com and scroll down to "An unbelievable Vulcan experience! This was recorded at Brize Norton on Saturday 19th September 2009, where we had been invited by the Vulcan to the Sky Team to witness a Take off & display, as a special request from myself for my mother, who had introduced me to the Vulcan at airshows at an early age. Apologies for the footage as it's not the best thanks to an age old camcorder, but hopefully the Vulcan howl will come across well on here from our priviledged position on the balcony of the Brize control tower - a big thanks to the VTTS team, in particular Robert Pleming & Mike Pollitt, as well as the air crew that we met on the day. Sunshine greeted the take off but about an hour later on her return the skies had changed completely! Please visit www.vulcantothesky.org and donate to help keep the Delta Lady in the skies for years to come!
