Edward Petrovich Hau ~ Interiors of the Winter Palace
Edward Petrovich Hau ~ Interiors of the Winter Palace
Edward Petrovich Hau was born in 1807 in Revel, Tallinn today. Engaged in painting since childhood, in the years 1830-1832 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. In 1838, the 'Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg has honoured him with a silver medal. The artist has become very famous for having brought in watercolour the most famous buildings in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Gatchina, inhabited by the tsar. The Winter Palace (Russian: Зи́мний дворе́ц, IPA: [ˈzʲimnʲɪj dvɐˈrʲɛts]) in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was, from 1732 to 1917, the official residence of the Russian monarchs. Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917 as depicted in Soviet paintings and Eisenstein's 1927 film October became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.- published: 12 Jan 2014

Dresden A walking tour around the city / Ein Rundgang durch die Stadt / Un paseo por la ciudad
Photographic travel guide across the Art and Architecture highlights of the city of Dresden (Germany / Deutschland). Music from the composer Roger Subirana. Dresden is the capital city of the Free State of Saxony (Sachsen) in Germany. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near the Czech border. The Dresden conurbation is part of the Saxon Triangle metropolitan area with 2.4 million inhabitants. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city center. A controversial Allied aerial bombing towards the end of World War II killed 25,000 civilians and destroyed the entire city center. The impact of the bombing and 40 years of urban development during the East German communist era have considerably changed the face of the city. Some restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semper Oper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche. Since German reunification in 1990, Dresden has regained importance as one of the cultural, educational, political and economic centers of Germany and Europe. The Dresden University of Technology is one of the 10 largest universities in Germany and part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative. The video consists of a slideshow of pictures taken during a visit to the historic inner city and includes several interesting buildings, streets and monuments: - Hauptbahnhof (Main railway station). - Wiener Platz. - Praguer Strasse. - Kulturpalast. - Johanneum. - Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady. Rebuilt in 2005). - Neumarkt. - Coselpalais. - Der Fürstenzug. (Procession of Princes). - Lange Gang. - Residenzschloss. (Castle of Dresden). - Kurländer Palais. - Albertinum. - Kunstakademie. (Academy of Fine Arts). - Brühlschen Terrasse. - Schlossplatz. - Katholische Hofkirche. (Catholic Cathedral). - Semperoper. (Opera House). - Zwinger. - Taschenbergpalais. - Neustadt. - Staatskanzlei. - Der Jägerhof. - Neustädter Markt. - Japanisches Palais. - Albertplatz. - Yenidze. - City Sunset.- published: 17 Nov 2013

Syrian Jewels: Damascene Interiors in Context by Anke Scharrahs
Speaker: Anke Scharrahs, Scholar-in-Residence
When: August 31, 2013
Where: Shangri La
Damascus is one of the oldest and continuously inhabited cities in the world. Preserved in the Old City of Damascus are approximately three to four thousand historic, private houses of the late 17th through 19th centuries, ranging from small and simple residences to large opulent mansions. The interior spaces of these private houses were adorned with sophisticated decoration including opus sectile, tinted plaster, polychrome stone reliefs, murals, mother-of-pearl inlays, tiles, polychrome wooden paneling and ceilings, mirrors, stained glass and gypsum windows and textiles. The most lavishly adorned rooms of Arab homes were used as receptions rooms for guests, reflecting the cultivation and taste as well as the wealth and social status of the owner-builder. The complex decoration in such interiors has been subject of extensive study and documentation by Scharrahs, revealing the almost-forgotten original color scheme and interior and intended appearance, now often obscured by deterioration or later alterations. This lecture will introduce some of the hidden jewels or original interior decoration in Damascene homes and give an insight into the current situation of using and living in these houses.
Anke Scharrahs is a conservator specializing in polychrome wooden surfaces with a special interest in Islamic art. She trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in Germany and has been engaged in research and conservation of Syrian-Ottoman interiors for 15 years, both in museum collections and in historic houses in Germany, New York and Damascus. She is the author of the book Ajami Interiors: Forgotten Jewels of Interior Design published in 2013.

Bad News - A Media Fiction (Diplom)
Is it possible that the exclamation of the end of the world is able to provoke the apocalypse?
We are inside an american printery for newspaper in the 1950s now. A freshly printed newspaper comes to the fore. The headline proclaims the end of the world and pushes us straight towards the reports of the financial crisis of nowadays at the same time. The illustration of a comet, which is running down to the earth, intensifies the impression of the approaching end.
The film asks the question which consequences could be caused by information and news.
With regard to the financial crisis, the metaphor is a kind of an exaggerated persiflage: only the message of the apocalypse causes the end of the world – a self-fulfilling prophecy caused by the media!
The layout of the newspaper changes during the film parallel to the dramatic of the story.
The first reaction releases a visual chaos which develops while the film continues. An information flood takes the audience by surprise. Letters, words, graphics, illustrations, photo collage – the whole design collapses like an avalanche and is getting rebuild in the form of the comet, which is made of terms and graphical material.

Vilhelm Hammershøi
Vilhelm Hammershøi was born on 15 May 1864 in Copenhagen to Frederikke (b. Rentzmann) and Christian Hammershøi, a merchant. He had a younger sister, Anna, and two brothers: Otto and Svend. Svend also became an artist. Vilhelm received drawing classes from the age of eight. He enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1879 and also studied under P.S. Krøyer. Vilhelm had his debut as an artist in 1885, presenting a portrait of his sister. That year he also made his first journey, travelling to Berlin and Dresden. In June of 1890 he became engaged to Ida Ilsted; they were married in September 1891. Ida became the main figure within Hammershøi's life and art and posed for a great many of his paintings. The couple's homes were also featured in Vilhelm's art. In an interview from 1907 he said: "I have always felt that such rooms possess great beauty even if there are no people in it; or perhaps precisely when there are none." Throughout his life Vilhelm travelled in Europe with Ida and exhibited his work in several major cities. He won international acclaim and was supported by his patron, Alfred Bramsen, who bought many of his works and promoted his art.- published: 08 May 2014
