Smith GMEA Middle School All State Band conducted by Robert W. Smith performs "Pan American March" by Karl King, arr. Andy Clark. 3/5/2011, Savannah Civic Center theater.
Quiet City is the fourth album from Mark Nelson's Pan•American project and combines the computer-centric approach of The River Made No Sound with the organic instrumentation that marked Nelson's work in Labradford and the first two Pan•American albums. Three of the eight tracks were recorded with Charles Kim (Sinister Luck Ensemble) and feature upright bass, drums, trumpet and flugelhorn. Nelson even sings a bit. The rippling electronics and muffled beats of the first three Pan•American albums are still there; distended into elegiac, resonant, wavering, and ambient song craft. The CD edition of Quiet City comes with a DVD that contains a video essay shot and edited by Mark Nelson and Chicago visual artist Annie Feldmeier.
As Bob Baker Fish noted "Pan•American's forte is in the studio, crafting together all manner of disparate sounds with a patience and eclecticism rarely sighted in contemporary electronica." Pan•American has released singles and contributed to compilations on labels across the world, done remix work for artists like PSI Performer and Kid 606, collaborated with the artist Thomas Demand and toured with Radian and Low. He has a release coming up on the brand new Mosz label as well. The full-length video that accompanies the album is a visual meditation on the theme of the quiet city; suitable for focussed viewing or accompanying everyday activity — an ambient video if it helps to think of it as that.

Pan American Boogie
Ray Campi formed his first band - Ramblin' Ray & The Ramblers, way back in 1949. He has been playing his brand of American Roots Music on stages all over the world ever since. Though his repertoire includes a substantial dose of Country and Western Swing, it is among Rockabilly enthusiasts that Ray has gained his legendary status. Not only did he cut records which are now regarded as Rockabilly classics in the genre's 1950s heyday, he was partly responsible for sparking the 1970s/80s Rockabilly Revival via his releases on Ronny Weiser's infamous Rollin' Rock Records.
"Rollin' Rock" was founded as a magazine in 1970, with the record label being formed the following year. Weiser's limitless enthusiasm for Rockabilly music led to him rediscovering and recording numerous artists of the original Rockabilly era including Gene Vincent, Mac Curtis, Charlie Feathers, Jackie Lee Cochran and Johnny Carroll. He also unleashed a whole roster of new young artists to keep the Rockabilly flame burning.
The most prolific artist on Rollin' Rock was Ray Campi. Not only did Campi release a string of singles, EPs and albums, many of which were licensed and distributed world-wide, his multi-instrumental talents can be heard providing guitar, slap-bass and percussion on many releases by the label's other artists. The Rollin' Rock Tour on 1977 was a phenomenal success in Europe, and headliners Campi and Mac Curtis became cult figures.
In the mid 1980s Rollin' Rock ceased issuing new material, but Campi's profile was maintained via live appearances, such as the show captured on this film, and with archive material being leased to specialist labels world-wide. The 90s saw several new releases, often in collaboration with other Roots & Rockabilly artists including Rose Flores and Dave Alvin, and in Europe with The Bellhops, The Lennerockers and the Hal Peters Trio. In fact, at the time of writing, his latest album "One More Hope" is his second collaboration with Rockabilly trio The Bellhops.
Campi has been performing and recording first class Roots and Rockabilly music for almost 50 years now, and with more festival dates lined up, shows no sign of giving up.

Ray Campi
Raymond Charles "Ray" Campi (born April 20, 1934), is an American rock and roll musician sometimes called "The King of Rockabilly". He first recorded in the mid-1950s. Campi's trademark is his white double bass, which he often jumps on top of and "rides" while playing.
Biography
He was born in Yonkers, New York. After his family moved to Austin, Texas in 1944, Campi began a lifetime of performing and recording music in numerous American genres, including folk, country, and rock and roll as well as rockabilly. Early on he recorded on Domino Records. In the 1950s Ray Campi recorded for several labels, including Dot Records, and recorded the first tribute record to the 1959 Buddy Holly plane crash, 'The Ballad of Donna and Peggy Sue', backed by the Big Bopper's band. He also worked with many of the most prominent pioneers of rock and roll music, including Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, and Gene Vincent.
He rarely concentrated on his musical career exclusively, working a wide variety of jobs, notably twenty-five years, from 1967, spent as a high-school teacher in Van Nuys, California. He has fiercely criticized the mainstream music industry, in particular its connections with drug culture.

Ray Campi formed his first band - Ramblin' Ray & The Ramblers, way back in 1949. He has been playing his brand of American Roots Music on stages all over the world ever since. Though his repertoire includes a substantial dose of Country and Western Swing, it is among Rockabilly enthusiasts that Ray has gained his legendary status. Not only did he cut records which are now regarded as Rockabilly classics in the genre's 1950s heyday, he was partly responsible for sparking the 1970s/80s Rockabilly Revival via his releases on Ronny Weiser's infamous Rollin' Rock Records.
"Rollin' Rock" was founded as a magazine in 1970, with the record label being formed the following year. Weiser's limitless enthusiasm for Rockabilly music led to him rediscovering and recording numerous artists of the original Rockabilly era including Gene Vincent, Mac Curtis, Charlie Feathers, Jackie Lee Cochran and Johnny Carroll. Quiet City is the fourth album from Mark Nelson's Pan•American project and combines the computer-centric approach of The River Made No Sound with the organic instrumentation that marked Nelson's work in Labradford and the first two Pan•American albums. Three of the eight tracks were recorded with Charles Kim (Sinister Luck Ensemble) and feature upright bass, drums, trumpet and flugelhorn. Nelson even sings a bit. The rippling electronics and muffled beats of the first three Pan•American albums are still there; distended into elegiac, resonant, wavering, and ambient song craft. The CD edition of Quiet City comes with a DVD that contains a video essay shot and edited by Mark Nelson and Chicago visual artist Annie Feldmeier. Politicians Jockey For The Spotlight At 2013 West Indian Day Parade
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- For a few short hours on Labor Day morning, the toughest job in New York just might belong to Bill Howard.
That's because Howard, the 70-year-old vice president of the West Indian Day Carnival Association (WIADCA), will again be the host for the VIP breakfast before the city's annual West Indian American Day Parade. Like in past elections, politicians running for citywide or Brooklyn office are expected to attend the major event -- and all of them will be asking Howard for a helping hand in getting a reception among the influential crowd of 500.
The West Indian Day Parade is a cultural institution in New York, when millions turn out along Eastern Parkway to see the steel pan bands, the feathered dancers and the floats blasting reggae, calypso and soca music. The breakfast attendees include influential Caribbean-Americans, including businesspeople, heads of Caribbean cultural organizations and church leaders. It's a valuable speaking opportunity for politicians.
"It's very bad. You can't accommodate everybody," Howard told The Huffington Post. "I'm emceeing, and you've got 50 staff members sending cards and notes up to me that so-and-so is under the tent, and can he get two minutes on the podium. It gets complicated."
The complications don't just end when the politician gets on stage. Getting him or her off is often a harder task that produces its own set of stresses, Howard said.
"Once you've given an elected official a mic, it's kind of hard to have them move," he said. "If an elected official starts going on too long, I stand right behind him and start pulling his coattails."
Politicking happens at all of the city's big parades -- St. Patrick's Day, Puerto Rican Day, Gay Pride -- with candidates looking for a prominent spot in the march or a chance to speak. But the Labor Day procession in central Brooklyn is New York's largest. That the celebration falls just days before the mayoral primary election on Sept. 10 only amplifies its significance.
And in this year's crowded Democratic field for mayor, the parade provides an opportunity to woo black voters. A poll released last week by Siena College and The New York Times showed that 20 percent of black Democrats hadn't made up their minds on the mayoral race (or wouldn't reveal their choice).
