九如图- Nine Goldfish is a good omen in Chinese, which suggests best fortune. Materials List Brush:Combination Brush of Goat and Wolf hairs, www.blueheronarts.com Paper: single Xuan. Paints: Marie's Chinese painting colors, Ink: ground ink paste from tung oil soot Inkstick. Glue Water: Peach Sap Glue Powder www.blueheronarts.com * Translation of the corner seal: "Once you've gotten the fish you can forget the trap" which is a line from the Taolist master Chuang Tzu. He said: "The fish trap exists because of the fish. Once you've gotten the fish you can forget the trap. The rabbit snare exists because of the rabbit. Once you've gotten the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words exist because of meaning. Once you've gotten the meaning, you can forget the words. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words so I can talk with him?" My interpretation: getting the right painting brush is necessary to paint the fish, but it is more important to captured the happy spirit of the fish. If you've gotten what I am trying to say, forget about my poor English words. :-) I carved this seal 25 years ago when I was a graduate student in Nanjing University. * If you like it I can make a seal like it for you. www.BlueHeronArts.com

Painting Plum Blossom Chinese Hanging Scroll with Rooster Feather Brush
Available on DVD now! www.blueheronarts.com This plum blossom painting conclude the "Four Gentlemen" hanging scroll series. I have tried very hard to take advantage of the green screen trick that I have just learned to give the viewer some idea about spirit of plum blossoms which bloom in the snow. I found theses nice pictures on the internet AFTER I have done the painting and in the video editing process to make it look like I was painting in front of those beautiful flowers instead of the green screen. I wish it helps you to get the essence of Chinese plum blossom painting. Let me know what do you think. The brush that I used for this plum painting is made of rooster feather. It worked out just as I expected - to loosen up control over details and concentrate on the oneness of all strokes and the wholesome image in my mind. I love the rich texture generated by dry feather brush on the trunk and the bouncing twigs produced by sensitive feather tip. If you are interested to learn Chinese brush painting, you may get your authentic Chinese painting supplies at www.blueheronarts.com Thank you for all your support! Henry

Traditional Chinese Painting - Chinese Flower Bird Painting - Watercolor.Chinese Bird Flower Painting. Flower Bird Landscapes. This evening I thought a severe Tea-Bird would pass the time. The paper is a single weight Chinese paper bought for me by Melissa. Two years ago. Odd that perhaps the conditions are better for it here but it is easier to use than when first tried in 2008. I need a studio to work in. The amosphere doesnt help me work. I still seek refuge. Maybe soon. England is quietly roting here and we, the recession victims, are being statistically hidden. So it's nice top lose onesself in activities that were engaged within over 5000 years ago in the Chinese Historcial depths.

How to Paint Colorful Grape Vines - a Chinese Watercolor Tutorial
This video is a special painting class based on a masterpiece done by my teacher Zhang Zhengyin(1912-1995). I took this lesson from Mater Zhang in the Fall of 1974 when I was only 15 years old. Chairman Mao is still alive at that time and yes, it was during the Cultural Revolution. It was a one-on-one private class in Master Zhang's studio and I still remember what he taught me in that class about how to observe natural grapevines and grasp its essence in our painting. He was so kind and gave this teaching sample to me for free, which I have treasured for 36 years and kept learning every time I open it. In this 30 minutes video you will learn how to mix colors for the leave and the fruits, vines and tendrils. Do you want get a first hand approach to Chinese brush painting? Chinese painting supplies used in this video are available at www.BlueHeronArts.com Thank you! Henry

Soundtrack: Richard Eigner
Chirality is a scientific term describing a structure that is not identical to its mirror image. “Chiral” collects cinematic etudes, which develop various conceptual approaches in order to expand the two-dimensional image into space. They are projected onto a sculpture (510 x 260 x 370 cm) and a screen (250 x 200 cm) made from handmade Taiwanese paper and develop very different lives on these configurations of the same material.
The amalgamation of volumetric lights sets ideas from Chinese calligraphy into motion and melts them with influences from European Art Informel as well as impasto painting to an abstract-organic sculpture. The installation is completed by a soundtrack by Austrian composer Richard Eigner (www.ritornell.at). With the premiere in MOCA Taipei the first iteration of the long-term project was presented…

Just Because: Tricycle Calligraphy 水书法器
Media Artist Nicholas Hanna built a tricycle that can also paint Chinese characters on the ground as it moves, just — because.
Water Calligraphy has a long history in China, normally characterized by older Chinese men painting characters on the ground of parks with long brushes and water.
Nicholas' version is a wee bit more complicated.
