Tanabe, Jr. is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Hawaii. He was a Professor of Religion in the UH Department of Religion. He has been a keen and critical observer of Buddhist institutions in Hawaii. 20120702-1400-no8-gregory-gibbs-se-pdx-jodo-shinshu-buddhism-rennyo-i'll take care f it we can be intellectual and scientific about everything we do. [model] merged with a very spiritual model of transformative influence. this tension is essentially the diversity which exists between the views of shinran and rennyo shonin shinran being very intellectural deep and elevated, ...carrying this message to everyone besides being willing to refer to the pure land as blissful eternity. which you would never imagine shinran as doing, there is a story about rennyo shonin. rennyo shonin had this housekeeper for about 20 years, that had helped him working around the-hongani, from time to time she would say, gomonshu, i'm sorry, but to tell you the truth, don't know if i am going to the pure land or not. rennyo said, "I'll take care of it." ie, don't worry about it. Shinran would never have said that. Rennyo has known this woman for 20 years. [rennyo] knows her heart was open to the teaching. and she doesn't know it. so he says. i'll take care of it. in other words, don't worry about it. these are very different personalities. accessed in this life or at its end. entering this realm is like being on a train whose inevitable destination is enlightenment. that's a phrase i got from laverne sazaki sensei who had gone to do meditation with, gasan roshi, a fukuoka zen roshi. laverne sensei asked gasan roshi, are you enlightened? gasan: i am on a train whose inevitable destination is ...

title: 20120702-1400-no7-gregory-gibbs-se-pdx-jodo-shinshu-buddhism-democracy-world-good whether it is good or bad is hard to know. this is aikin roshi being honest enough to say what he was feeling was more the opposite of mudita, resentment. he was jealous. he has been working on this koan for years. this college kid walks in the door and gets it the same day. i mean, it's not fair. this is what we don't want to feel. somebody might thing. what about my son i believe this imayu drew this, she won some award, she is a brilliant little artist, how old is mayu now, 6, she is not as good on chalkboard, cindy cohen's daughter is good on chalkboard. people are asking us. [buddhism going into the] 21st century, and nobody knows for sure, but some things are pretty clear. it's got to be more democratic. this is real good for jodo shinshu, nishi hongangi is maybe the earliest representative democracy. [buddhism] anything that is going to work in north america has got to be democratic. this is a big problem for tibetan buddhism. non tibetan converts to tibetan buddhism are either obtuse or rationalizing or don't realize how hierarchical tibetan society is. some of this thrust is coming from different directions they want us to be scientific and rational. that's true and i'm all for that. which involves a disbelief in the supernatural. problem there is, what is supernatural who knows what is or is not supernatural. particularly for calming us down and becoming composed and ...
