Today marks the 125th anniversary of the Buddhist Flag in the country 28-4-2010
Today marks the 125th anniversary of the Buddhist Flag in the country. The inaugural ceremony of then Buddhist Flag designed and introduced by Sri Lanka was held on April 28 1885 on a Vesak Full Moon Day on Adhi Vesak Day. The Flag was originally designed in 1885 by the Colombo Committee. This flag was published in the Sarasavi Sandaresa newspaper of 17 April 1885 and was first hoisted in public on Vesak day, 28 May 1885 at the Dipaduttamarama, Kotahena, by Ven. Migettuwatte Gunananda thera. This was the first Vesak public holiday under British rule. Colone Henry Steel Olcott, an American journalist, founder and first president of the Theosophical Society, felt that its long streaming shape made it inconvenient for general use. He therefore suggested modifying it so that it was the size and shape of national flags. Modifications were made accordingly, which were adopted. The modified flag was published in the Sarasavi Sandaresa of 8 April 1886 and first hoisted on Vesak day 1886. In 1889 the modified flag was introduced to Japan by Anagarika Dharmapala and Olcott who presented it to the Emperor and subsequently to Burma. At the inaugural conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists on 25 May 1950, its founder President Professor GPMalasekera proposed that this flag be adopted as the flag of Buddhists throughout the world; this motion was unanimously passed. The five colours of the flag represent the six colours of the aura that emanated from the body of the Buddha when ...

Flags around Vajrasana at Bodhgaya
Vajrasana - The seat of Enlightenment (Exact spot of the Lord Buddha's Enlightenment) In the fourth week after enlightenment, Lord Buddha created a beautiful jewelled chamber and sitting inside it meditated on what was later known as the "Detailed Teaching" (Abhidhamma). His mind and body were so purified that six coloured rays came out of his body — blue, yellow, red, white, orange and a mixture of these five. Today these six colours make up the Buddhist flag. Each colour represented one noble quality of the Buddha: yellow for holiness, white for purity, blue for confidence, red for wisdom and orange for desirelessness. The mixed colour represented all these noble qualities.(www.buddhanet.net About Buddhist Flag en.wikipedia.org www.buddhanet.net Forth week after enlightenment www.youtube.com About Sri Maha Bodhi Tree en.wikipedia.org About Gautama Buddha en.wikipedia.org About Mahabodhi Temple en.wikipedia.org About Bodhgaya www.buddhanet.net en.wikipedia.org whc.unesco.org About Anagarika Dharmapala Maha Thero en.wikipedia.org

SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERNATIONAL BUDDHIST FLAG& MORE ANCIENT HISTORY
CulturePeaceForever's webcam video January 26, 2010, 11:28 AM Several sources have taught the significance of the International Buddhist flag. This is the color significance of the colors of the flag. All the colors in this video symbolize the aura of Buddha after he became enlightened under the famous Bodhi Tree. The Color Blue it has been taught, shown brightly from the Buddha's hair and is symbolic of the spirit of Universal Compassions of all the sentient beings. Yellow, which also showed brightly or radiated from our Buddha's skin symbolized the Middle Way which is not extreme and which has taught balance and freedom of all mental obstructions or "freedom". Red,which also showed brightly from our Buddha's skin symbolzes the blessings we receive or attain from much practice of the Dharma(Of the Buddha's teachings.) The white color which showed brightly from the Buddha's teetch and bones teaches us,and symbolized the purity of our Buddha's teachngs and the freedom it helps bring us. Finally, The Orange which shows brightly from our Buddha's hands(his palms and lips) symbolized the steady Teachings(Dharma)of the buddha. All the colors together show the universal truth of our Buddha's teachings. All sentient beings are born with the potential for Buddhahood. Blue also means the idea of loving kindness and peace in Buddhist teachings. Yellow means the Middle Path(Madhyamika) or the absolute emptiness of form.. Red means achievement, wisdom, virtue, fortune, and dignity,(or the ...

buddhist monk - self immolation
June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government at the time. Buddhist monks asked the regime to lift its ban on flying the traditional Buddhist flag, to grant Buddhism the same rights as Catholicism, to stop detaining Buddhists and to give Buddhist monks and nuns the right to practice and spread their religion. As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound.
