Economic Collapse Update 081012 Shipping Industry Collapse warns of Global Economic Collapse!
Economists / Politicians / Media personalities keep on quoting GROWTH numbers; for example, they tell us that China will experience 7-8% growth this year. In a 15 Trillion dollar Economy that would equate to almost $100 billion dollars of Economic growth in just one year! However the numbers that matter, such as their power and energy consumption data, and more importantly the shipping data reveal a completely different story! If every nation that matters has been slowing down for the past 5 years, where has this growth been coming from? It is far more logical to conclude that the Global Economy is Receding, is in a RECESSION, it is not growing. The facts on the ground are loudly screaming that the Global Economy is Collapsing not growing! Given the Economic disaster that is Europe, the biggest consumer of Chinese goods, and the disaster that is Japan, with it's manufacturing in the toilet, and the disaster that is the US where the retail sector is nowhere near 2007 levels, how can there have been growth in any Economy? Though the numbers that defy logic may claim there is growth, the numbers that matter such as the Baltic Dry Index which is a measure of the shipping industry reveal that things are getting worse, much worse, not better. The BDI has slid 55% this year alone, and that shows clearly that international trade is grinding to a halt. Shiploads of Chinese goods are no longer making their way to European shores, or to American ones. And the ships that do make it ...

Anh ngữ đặc biệt: Shipping Slowdown (VOA)
Chương trình học tiếng Anh của VOA: Special English Economics Report. Xin hãy vào www.youtube.com để xem các bài kế tiếp. From VOA Learning English, this is the Economics Report in Special English. A recent report on international shipping showed a big slowdown in the industry. Container shipping companies lost nearly $5 billion dollars in 2011. Less activity in shipping raises concerns about the global economy. That is because numbers on shipping are important economic indicators. Drewry Shipping Consultants released the report in September. It says the industry faces a poor outlook because of weak demand. And that weakness is partly due to China's economic slowdown. It is also influenced by an oversupply of ships. That results in overcapacity. Across the industry many ships have started "slow steaming". That means they are sailing at lower speeds to save fuel. The average speed of container ship fleets fell by 20 percent this year compared to 2009. The Baltic Dry Index measures the cost of shipping important materials. That index hit a 25-year low in February. Industry watchers say many companies ordered a lot of new ships during a short boom period from 2007 to 2008. But the global economy slowed when the ships were ready to sail in 2010. Industry experts say the shipping industry downturn is related to China's slowing economic growth. Experts say Chinese imports have fallen by around 2.6 percent year to year. They say not enough iron ore, coal and oil are coming into ...

Mississippi River Is Drying Up
FAIR USE NOTICE: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says this past July was the hottest ever for the US since record-keeping began. www.todaysthv.com "It looks like a coastline out there," said Reynold Minsky, president of the 5th Louisiana Levee District board. "There are more beaches on the river than there are in Florida." www.shreveporttimes.com The worst US drought in 50 years is making the mighty Mississippi River dry up and could curb shipping there altogether. www.newser.com The Mississippi river is drying up and some shipping companies are worried that the drought of 1988 may be repeated, a time when the river dried up so much that barge traffic came to a standstill. In 1988 the shipping industry lost $1 billion, a number that would be far higher in 2012 and could be reached in as little as three days. www.inquisitr.com

Iran's complaint against US, EU sanctions
The years now and specially the past few months most of the news about Iran broadcasted by western media has been peppered with words like sanctions, economic strife, nuclear this and nuclear that, all the vocabulary associated with grave concern. The economic, political and even cultural pressure imposed on Iran by the west is under pretext of pressuring it into halting its nuclear energy program. The latest round of sanctions has targeted Iran's banks, energy and shipping industries and since they were imposed all eyes have been on Iran to see what results the pressure will yield. But Iran says the accusations against its nuclear energy program are baseless. To back that claim the International Atomic Energy Agency has not reported any deviations in the program either. The Iranian government's reaction to the sanctions sends the message loud and clear that as before Tehran plans on withstanding the pressure of sanctions. Iran is adamant that the sanctions violate international law and various treaties. Iran's presidential centre for International Legal Affairs is preparing to file a lawsuit against the US and European Union accusing them of imposing sanctions that are not supported by the UN charter. This episode of the program takes a look at Iran's legal case against the West's sanctions imposed on the country. Watch this video on our website: www.presstv.com

Young, and Training for a Good Job -- at Sea
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Many new college graduates in the United States have trouble finding a job in the weak economy. But not graduates from the California Maritime Academy. The academy is the only school of its kind on the West Coast. Students attend classes on the university campus in northern California. But they also gain experience by going to sea in a floating classroom, the training ship Golden Bear. Two hundred eighty-eight cadets recently sailed on a two-month international training cruise. The ship travels south to the Panama Canal. Along the way, it visits countries in Central America and the Caribbean.Vasile Tudoran is a mechanical engineering student at the California Maritime Academy. He spends much of his time working deep in the heart of the ship. He says he is not worried about finding a job.Robert Jackson is one of his teachers. He says the majority of the academy's students have between one and two job offers before they complete their studies. He says most of those job offers are between 60 and 120 thousand dollars a year. In addition to working on ships, he says, engineering graduates from the academy also get jobs with power companies and satellite companies. Instructor Bill Schmid says the situation for marine transportation students is not as bright as it was before the economic downturn, but it is recovering. He says most academy graduates are employed in the industry, if they want to ...

This is a personal project that would not have been possible without the support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. Thanks to the entire team for their generous access during training exercises and patrols this Summer. Since the Service began in 1973, it has carried out more than 21,000 missions ranging from urgent patient transfers to dangerous search and rescue missions.
This film is 100% 'real', but there are some new techniques for me here, such as using time lapse to create the illusion of forward movement for the helicopter ocean scenes. These flight sequences would not be possible without the skill and patience of Chief Pilot Peter Yates. Thanks also to Trevor Cracknell (for getting wet!) and Family.

Schiedam 2012
Schiedam has the largest windmills in the world. In the heyday of the city's jenever history in the 19th century around twenty windmills could be found in the city. These ground grains for the malt wine distillers and for the city's bakers. There are only six windmills left in the city and these are the largest in the world. City on water Schiedam is a historical city on water. The city centre offers many possibilities for a true voyage of discovery. A city walk will take you past the ports, the largest windmills in the world, distilleries and malt houses. But you can also take a trip on a fluisterboot (silent boat), and there are many docking areas for leisure boats. The inland port used to serve the city's shipping industry. It was here that the zakkendragers (sack carriers) used to unload the grain for the jenever industry in the Lange Haven. The river Schie winds its way right through the heart of the historical city centre and the city lies on the Maas Boulevard. The city's story The monuments and museums of Schiedam tell the city's story. For example, a clock hangs in the tower of the Zakkendragershuisje (sack carrier's house, 1725) on the Oude Sluis which used to signal to the sack carriers that a ship with grain or other cargo was loading or unloading. From the 15th century till far into the 20th century this building used to serve as a guild house for the 'Dragers of Sint Anthonisgilde' (carriers of Saint Anthonis guild). The oldest place in Schiedam is the Ruïne ...

Bangladesh's shipbuilding industry booming
Bangladesh serves as the last port of call for ageing ships throughout the world. But alongside some of the world's biggest ship breakers, there is a boom in shipbuilding in the country. The global economic crisis has meant many shipping companies have cancelled their big orders, so the yards of Bangladesh are building smaller and cheaper ships instead. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports from the southern port city of Chittagong.
