Cerebral Palsy 6 months - Brain Hemorrhage, Arachnoid Cyst, Hydrocephalus, Epilepsy
Noah had a grade IV brain hemorrhage in utero, developed a large arachnoid cyst behind his cerebellum in his brain which caused hydrocephalus, and had brain surgery when he was 7 weeks old. Doctors said he would die or be a vegetable and that he should be aborted. Even though he is diagnosed with left side spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy, he is walking, running, talking, and showing no cognitive delays. This video is meant for moms pregnant with special needs children, and for moms looking for visual answers about the development of their child.

Tom Strini's Song of the Week - "When Your Lover Has Gone"
The vast catalog of jazz-influenced popular songs written circa 1920-1960 might be America's greatest cultural treasure.
I hope you won't be content to read, watch and listen. I encourage everyone to participate by singing the Song of the Week and posting videos of their own. The performances can be raw or slick, serious or funny, professional or amateurish, accompanied or solo. The main thing is to participate, because it's fun to make music.
In the coming weeks we'll delve into songs by the likes of Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Hoagey Carmichael and Einar Swan.
Wait; Einar Swan?
I never heard of him either, until I ran across "When Your Lover Has Gone" on page 424 of Hal Leonard's "Ultimate Jazz Fake Book." I grew fond of the song and got curious about the credit line: "Words and music by E.A. Swan."
A Google search quickly led me to "Who Was Einar Swan?", a painstakingly researched scholarly paper by Sven Bjerstedt.
Einar was the son of John Swan, who came to the U.S. from Finland in 1899. John, a cabinet builder by trade, loved music and played several instruments, including the saxophone, then a novelty. After he settled in Worcester, Mass., Edla, his Finnish sweetheart, crossed the Atlantic and joined him. The couple produced 10 children, eight of whom survived into adulthood. Their father built violins and woodwind instruments for them. Seven became musical professionals on some level.
The elder Swan formed and led Finnish bands and was involved in church music. He loved the classics and Sousa and hated the emerging jazz styles. That set up a conflict with his most talented child, Einar.
At 16, Einar (1903-1940) started playing violin, at first, and then saxophone with dance bands at summer resorts near Worcester. They weren't playing minuets and quadrilles. Einar somehow kept his jazz conversion from the old man for the next few years. But there was no concealing it after 1924, when Einar moved to New York to join the red-hot house band of Sam Lanin's Roseland Ballroom in New York.
In 1925, Swan joined the Vincent Lopez band, forgotten now but famous in its day. At about the same time, he went home to Worcester try to reconcile with his father. It did not go well; John Swan became so incensed that he dramatically smashed the violin he'd made for his son with his own hands. Einar did not calm his father down with this piece of news: He was about to convert to the faith of the nice Jewish girl, Ann Kaufmann (1904-1993), he'd married in 1923. (To honor that faith, he changed his middle name from William to Aaron.) Einar had no further contact with his father.
Bizarre side note: In 1932, John Swan abandoned his family and ran off to California, never to return. He married another woman in California, and thus became a bigamist. He started an organ business in Eureka, Calif., and became known as an eccentric. Local newspaper stories report him building his entire house by himself and telling of (apparently fictional) Finnish revolutionary derring-do in his youth. He also made up tall tales about studying music with Sibelius.
Einar became a leading saxophonist and arranger for Lopez and traveled widely with the band. Ann went along on an extended run in London in 1925. Their daughter, Pearl, was born shortly after they returned to New York. Swan, a dedicated family man, quit the road and began to make a living as an arranger, primarily for the new radio orchestras at New York stations. Many of New York's best-known musicians stopped by the Swan apartment on W. 84th Street to make music and tell stories, according to Swan's son, Donald.
Swan tried to write and publish "enough songs to get into ASCAP," so royalties would supplement his arranging income. Only about a dozen songs are extant. "When Your Lover Has Gone" is by far the best known; Einar Swan was a one-hit wonder. The song got a boost when it was featured in a 1931 movie, "Blonde Crazy," with James Cagney and Joan Blondell. Since then, many big-time singers have recorded it, including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Sarah Vaughan and, in 1955, Frank Sinatra. Sinatra, in a quiet act of charity, gave the royalties for this record to Swan's widow. (Click on the link to buy that artist's recording of the song.)
In 1935, Swan was diagnosed with severe high blood pressure, untreatable in those days. Einar Swan died Aug. 8, 1940, of a cerebral hemorrhage, at age 37.
Hal Leonard's "Ultimate Jazz Fake Book" includes "When Your Lover Has Gone" and over 600 other classic songs. Buy it online here, or at these fine Milwaukee-area music retailers: White House of Music, Brass Bell, Casio Interstate Music. Recordings by

I survived a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage this year
Hi my name is JP Amolat I'm just a normal guy living in Boston. I'm like the rest of the 99% who's had their life struggles trying to figure out life and make the most of it. I had a brain hemorrhage Jan 3 of this year (2011) and I was in a coma for three months. I woke up paralyzed, confused, had amnesia. I had this condition called subarachnoid hemorrhage. According to wiki SAH is a form of stroke and comprises 1--7% of all strokes. It is a medical emergency and can lead to death or severe disability—even when recognized and treated at an early stage. I feel very fortunate to have been given a second chance in living my life. I dedicate this video for all the people in hospitals and their families fighting to live and for all of our courageous men and women in the armed forces who put their lives on the line every single day especially the ones who became disabled. My best friend is currently serving as an army officer in Kabul, Afghanistan and its people like him where I draw courage from. I had my own internal war this year - fighting to stay alive, fighting to survive and walk again, fighting to get my life back on track. So far I have won this battle. I'm slowly trying to pick up the pieces where I left off. I'm almost back to normal. I still don't have sensation on my feet and have this condition called neuropathy which is this annoying odd tingling sensation. I'm currently receiving acupuncture treatment for it and hopefully it will help. It's hard to stay ...
