Sculptor David Lemon - Working on the Horse - I Fail on a Ladder
Back to work on the horse today. At some point I was asked to help attach a sign that fell off a top shelf yesterday. I climbed up on an old metal ladder, and I was stepping back down, the bottom rung of the ladder broke. Not hurt I continued working on the horses head and neck. A Short Animation Inspired by the Works of İlhan Koman
Plato Art Space is proud to present Candaş Şişman’s video dedicated to famous sculptor İlhan Koman produced for the exhibition İlhan Koman: Hulda Festival, a Journey into Art and Science opening on the 22nd September, 2010.
İlhan Koman’s unique design approach in his form studies also inspires contemporary art works. The video installation Flux by young artist Candaş Şişman can be defined as a digital animation which is inspired from the structural features of some of İlhan Koman’s works like Pi, 3D Moebius, Whirlpool and To Infinity... A red circle, which is colored in reference to the red radiators of Ogre, is traced in a morphological transformation which re-interprets the formal approach of Koman’s works. The continuous movement sometimes connotes the formal characteristics of Pi, 3D Moebius, Whirlpool and To Infinity..., as well as the original formal interpretations of the design principles of the works . In Flux, Koman’s design process in the making of the Pi series has been treated as the emerging of a sphere from a two-dimensional circle by the principle of increasing the surface; and that simple direction is re-interpreted in digital medium. Thanks to this, in the digital animation an entirely different form serial that does not resemble Pi yet remaining its design principle can be followed through the flow of a circle to the sphere. As a conscious attitude of the artist, this work is not designed in a direct visual analogy with Koman’s works. During the animation, none of the moments of the transforming form look like Pi or 3D Moebius, however the subjective reading of Koman’s approach can be observed.
With the integration of the sounds of various materials – which Koman used in his sculptures – Flux turns into an impressive spatial experience. Flux, also exemplifies that Koman’s work can be re-interpreted by the analysis and manipulation of form in the digital medium.

The indie rock band Modest Mouse is getting the royal treatment from Bent Image Lab’s new director/partner Nando Costa. Just completed, the band’s new music video is a dark and expressive piece of film-making. Heavily rooted in live-action, the impressive six-minute video includes intense moments of stop motion, visual effects, and motion graphics techniques, all brought to life within the studio’s walls.
The visuals follow an artist who enters his personal sanctuary where he is presented with a hand-crafted drawing tool that assists him in materializing his mental impressions. Through drawing circular patterns, the machine discharges an endless web of yarn that guides him through his visual representations of his memories. The story progresses to reveal that he is divided between two worlds, one of dull reality and the second of warped memories. In the process of finding a way out of his consciousness, he is trapped between the two competing spaces, which eventually inflict lethal damage, acting as metaphors to self-destruction.
This lyrical and moving piece was conceived by Nando Costa working closely with lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock to polish some of the film's intricacies. Featuring a seamless combination of live-action and stop motion that alternates between stage shots of Modest Mouse and a spiraling dream-like world of ever-shifting landscapes, Whale Song is a stunning representation of the combined capabilities of Nando and Bent. The variety and execution of the VFX portions of the video – from yarn reeling into complex patterns to a guitar that plays with no musician attached – strongly evoke the confused and surreal patterns of one's warped memories. Additional creative touches such as animated and intricate photographic collages and giant CG snails sliding across the band's stage – add variety and depth to the surreal world.
“This new video is the perfect showcase for the benefits of the collaboration between myself and Bent,” noted Costa. “I typically wouldn't have created a film with this much live-action or stop motion, and Bent also wouldn't normally approach a project with such a strong motion graphics influence, which is what I have long specialized in. With such well integrated in-house teams, I can’t imagine that there’s a project out there that we couldn’t pull off.”
One of the challenges in Whale Song was to recreate the contours of an ever changing, disorienting and intriguing series of landscapes. Costa shot the majority of the piece with Bent’s RED One cameras, which came in handy for their 4K capabilities when adding camera movement in post. In order to create the feeling that lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock was being split up between two competing scenarios of pure reality and his imagination, for example, Costa mounted two of the RED cameras side by side on a custom plate, each with identical lenses set at an angle to simulate a stereoscopic effect.
In another instance, band members that appeared to be standing on the ground were actually hoisted aloft and secured to a fake ground plane, which meant that the stage floor was perpendicular to the ground. This situation intentionally restrained their flexibility and shifted the gravity, adding oddness to their movements.
Costa used a variety of frame rates, ranging from time-lapses at 6 frames per second, to 1000 fps shots from a Phantom camera to give the feeling of variety of speed in the character's memories. Blue screen stages were used extensively to place Isaac against the varying landscapes of mountains, dense forest valleys, and deserts. Bent's CG department was also responsible for creating significant portions of the video's landscapes and scenic elements.
During production, Nando and his team relied solely on a very detailed script containing technical and creative notes, live-action and animation guidelines, with specifications for composting and stop motion, which were all previously defined and polished by the director. “From what I’ve learned, producing a project at Bent is a wonderfully self-contained experience,” noted Costa. “From building intricate props to figuring out complex CG shots, Bent has specialists in all fields. I’ll walk over to the stage for live-action, then back to compositing, load the footage and work from there. It makes the whole process immeasurably easier, and creatively freeing.”
“Seeing this video makes me feel good about what we’ve done here at Bent”, stated Bent EP Ray Di Carlo”. We set out to establish a creative clubhouse atmosphere where talented people like Nando could come to work. I’ve always admired directors who can hold a project’s final vision in their minds eye and are able to let the talents around them do their respective jobs for a pr

Sculptor Bruce Denny profiles his latest work
The life-size piece by figurative sculptor Bruce Denny will be exhibited in the South Churchyard of Londons St Pauls Cathedral, starting in September 2010 and is his greatest recognition to date. Born in 1967 in Suffolk, Bruce Denny stumbled into the world of sculpture by accident. He spent his youth making things out of anything he could lay his hands on, and vividly remembers his first exposure to three dimensional structures when he ran his hands over a sculpture in the local park. But his flair for the craft came later in life whilst he was looking for furnishings for his new apartment. After much searching he realised that he could not find what he wanted, and so decided to make it instead. Driven by his childhood passion he enrolled in a sculpture class at a local college and became immediately absorbed. Although he had no expectations that this introduction would go further than his own interest, it opened the doors to a natural progression that has led to his emergence as one of the most interesting sculptors working in the UK today Bruces work explores the human form and aims to evoke ideas and emotions, taking a refreshingly straightforward approach to art itself. In the following video, Bruce explains where his inspiration for the new sculpture came from and how he wants his art to be seen by others. The sculpture at St. Pauls Cathedral, entitled The Conversion of St Paul, shows the moment when St Paul falls from his horse after having been blinded by the Light ...

The Great American Sculptor
The Great American Sculptor Keith Allen Johnson is the only professional sculptor in history to have produced life-sized busts of six United States presidents. Keith Johnson is a leader of a new generation of realistic sculptors. He follows in the tradition of his mentors, master sculptors, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) and Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). These sculptors created images that matched the nation's sense of strength and confidence. Saint-Gauden's sculptures memorialized the leaders of his era - from President Lincoln to author Robert Lewis Stevenson. His work captured the individual while it conveyed the timeless, mythical quality of the hero. Daniel Chester French built his career as the preeminent monumental sculptor in America. Infusing the neo-classical tradition of statuary with a penetrating new realism and lively animation, he created dramatic compositions in marble and bronze. With the inspiration of these Masters as his guiding force, Johnson is the only American sculptor in history to create a collection of six life-size US Presidents. His Presidential sculptures display a perfect sense of the artist's ability to capture the spirit and the likeness of his subjects in heroic proportion. His innate visual abilities guide him in the creative process as he seeks the highest and most compelling interpretation for his subjects. In April of 1999, Johnson began the series of life-size Presidential sculptures. His first subject was a work of ...

Baby Sculptor. Camille Allen.
Hello, you probably noticed I love babies! I live in Powell River, in British Columbia, Canada. I am 28, married to a wonderful husband with no children yet. I work in a large studio in a bright and cheerful heritage building built in 1916. I have filled it with dolls, doll parts, dolls-in-progress and sculpting supplies! This is a great place to work, with the ocean out of the window and mountains in the background. I use various kinds of professional doll sculptors' clay to make the babies. The babies have soft English mohair to imitate fine baby hair and are blushed with paints for realism to enhance their tiny wrinkles and creases. Starting from detailed photographs and a lump of clay, sculpting a lifesize or miniature baby begins. It takes many, many hours of patient concentration to form a realistic baby and finish with fine details - including wrinkles and fingernails. I am privileged to have learned the art of doll making from my husband's grandmother just over 5 years ago. She taught me how to sculpt large lifesize dolls in polymer clay. A year later when I had some bits of leftover clay from a larger doll, I formed the bit of clay into a miniature baby. When I held the tiny baby in my hand I had the feeling of protectiveness and fascination. I loved it instantly! The first miniature baby I made was curled in a fetal position, and I even gave it an umbilical cord, as if it was still in the womb. The shape and size of the baby seemed similar to that of an egg ...
