Seth MacFarlane and Salman Rushdie on Israel
Sanest words on the subject I've heard on television in a long while. Seth MacFarlane's "dumb question" is anything but. And I'm not even a fan of his in general. Ask yourselves, why is so much media and public attention spent on Israel? Whose agendas are really being furthered here? What genocides and human tragedies are ignored in favor of a 60 year old land dispute with no real bearing on most people's lives? Many in favor of supporting a militant Israel are merely interested in using Israel as a pawn. Many in favor of criticizing / chastising Israel are thinly veiled anti-semites. Actual Palestinians and Israelis themselves are largely much more nuanced in their own views and opinions BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY HAVE TO LIVE THERE. Also: "Somebody's stolen all our Jews!" cracks me up. (Real Time with Bill Maher - Sept. 30th, 2011)

Authors@Google: Salman Rushdie
The Enchantress of Florence is the story of a woman attempting to command her own destiny in a man's world. It is the story of two cities, unknown to each other, at the height of their powers--the hedonistic Mughal capital, in which the brilliant Akbar the Great wrestles daily with questions of belief, desire, and the treachery of his sons, and the equally sensual city of Florence during the High Renaissance, where Niccolò Machiavelli takes a starring role as he learns, the hard way, about the true brutality of power. Salman Rushdie is the author of nine previous novels, including Midnight's Children (which was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981 and, in 1993, was judged to be the "Booker of Bookers," the best novel to have won that prize in its first twenty-five years) and The Satanic Verses (winner of the Whitbread Prize for Best Novel). He is also the author of a book of stories, East, West, and three works of nonfiction---Imaginary Homelands, The Jaguar Smile, and The Wizard of Oz. He is co-editor of Mirrorwork, an anthology of contemporary Indian writing. This event took place on June 18, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.

Salman Rushdie's story: The fatwa years
The Buck Stops Here: In an exclusive interview to NDTV, author Salman Rushdie says the Anti-Islam online video that has triggered violence in several countries is 'disgusting' but it's 'even more disgusting to kill people in its name.' He also says that India is a more intolerant country today, than when it first gained independence. From attacks on art galleries to recent sedition cases against cartoonists, Mr Rushdie says India is no longer Nehru's country. Nehru was a liberal, he says, who always argued against government censorship. Watch full show: www.ndtv.com

The Satanic Verses Affair - Salman Rushdi (Documentary) Iran
Twenty years ago, novelist Salman Rushdie was a wanted man with a million pound bounty on his head. His novel, The Satanic Verses, had sparked riots across the Muslim world. The ailing religious leader of Iran, the Ayatollah Khomeini, had invoked a little-known religious opinion - a fatwa - and effectively sentenced Rushdie to death. Never before had a novel created an international diplomatic crisis on such a scale, and never before had a foreign Government publicly called for the killing of a private citizen of another country. This film looks back on the extraordinary events which followed the publication of the book and the ten year campaign to get the fatwa lifted. Interviews with Rushdie's friends and family and testimony from leaders of Britain's Muslim community and the Government reveal the inside story of the affair. Rushdie himself was forced into hiding for nearly ten years.

Salman Rushdie on His Friendship with Christopher Hitchens
University Distinguished Professor Salman Rushdie participated in a class discussion of "The Moor's Last Sigh" led by Associate Professor of English Deepika Bahri with undergraduate students at Emory University on March 7, 2012. Here he responds to a question about his relationship with the late Christopher Hitchens. "One of the things about being Christopher's friend is that you disagreed with him maybe 75 percent of the time. But he was very enjoyable to disagree with," Rushdie says. "You could actually have very savage disagreements with him and it didn't affect your friendship." The interdisciplinary course, "India Today: Economics, Politics, Innovation, and Sustainability," is supported by The Halle Institute for Global Learning (www.halleinstitute.emory.edu).

With the same imagination that has made Salman Rushdie one of the great storytellers of our time, Luka and the Fire of Life revisits the magic-infused, intricate world he first brought to life in the modern classic Haroun and the Sea of Stories.
This new novel centers on Luka, Haroun’s younger brother, who must save his father from certain doom by traveling to the Magic World and stealing the Fire of Life. Thus begins a quest full of unlikely creatures, strange alliances, and seemingly insurmountable challenges as Luka and an assortment of enchanted companions race through peril after peril, pass through the land of the Badly Behaved Gods, and reach the Fire itself, where Luka’s fate, and that of his father, will be decided. Filled with mischievous wordplay and delving into themes as universal as the power of filial love and the meaning of mortality, Luka and the Fire of Life is a book of wonders for all ages.

Salman Rushdie and The Satanic Verses Affair
documentaryparadise.com An excellent historical documentary that highlights the trials and tribulations of Salman Rushdie as he struggled to lead a normal life under the constant threat of the Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa. The part of the story that most people don't seem to hear about is Rushdie's attempt to convince the Iranian religious leaders to withdraw the fatwa on the basis that he was becoming a more devout muslim. Obviously, it didn't work, but it does show how much pressure Rushdie must have been under at the time.
