Sandilya Rishi Bhakti jigyasa
Śāṇḍilya (Sanskrit: शाण्डिल्य) was the name of at least two prominent rishis. One of the rishis was the progenitor of the Sandilya gotra. The name was derived from the Sanskrit words śaṇ, full and dilam, the moon, with the derivative ya added, meaning the one of the full moon, thereby implying a priest or a descendant of the Moon God.One rishi was a son of the sage Asita and grandson of the rishi Kashyapa, and the founder of the Śāṇḍilya gotra. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad states that he was a disciple of Vaatsya rishi. [1] His other Acharyas include Kaushika, Gautama Maharishi, Kaishorya Kaapya, Vatsya Vaijavap, and Kushri. His disciples include Kaudinya, Agnivesa, Vatsya Vamakakshayan, Vaishthapureya, and Bharadwaj. [2] He was also the composer of the Śāṇḍilya Upanishad.[3] According to the Bhagavata Purana, he was instrumental in settling certain metaphysical doubts of King Parikshit of Hastinapura and King Vajra of Dwaraka.[4] The other, by some accounts, a son of the sage Vasistha, had his hermitage in the Shāradāvanam, or forest of Sharada, of a village in the Bolair Valley of Kashmir.[5] The village has been identified with the modern town of Sharda, on the banks of the River Kishanganga, in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. The goddess Sharada is said to have manifested herself to him, here, after severe penance by him, to confer upon him his yagnopaveetham, an event that was commemorated in the temple of Sharada Peeth in the town.

Fali Engineer - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
Also see batgap.com Am a Zoroastrian by birth but a theosophist by inclination; was educated in South India as a civil engineer and worked in Pakistan from 1950. I learned TM in 1974 from an American teacher who introduced it for the first time in the country. Realizing its great value, I traveled to Switzerland in early 1975 and graduated as a teacher of TM under the guidance of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who had popularized its practice in the West. As the only teacher in Pakistan initially, I organized the TM Movement there and was its National Leader for 12 years until my wife and I left in 1987 to settle in the US. Several thousand were taught during this period. In 1981, at Maharishi's invitation, I visited India and graduated as a TM-Sidhi teacher at his ashram in Rishikesh. Have been a member of the Theosophical Society for 44 years and am at present the president of the Houston Lodge, which is 98 years old. The motto of the Society is "There is no religion higher than Truth", to which all seekers would subscribe. Interview recorded 4/28/2010.

Gangaji - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
Also see batgap.com Gangaji shares a simple message-This is an invitation to shift your allegiance from the activities of your mind to the eternal presence of your being. Born in Texas in 1942, Gangaji grew up in Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1964, she married and had a daughter. In 1972, she moved to San Francisco where she began exploring deeper levels of her being. She took Bodhisattva vows, practiced Zen and Vipassana meditation, helped run a Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center, and had a career as an acupuncturist in the San Francisco Bay area. Despite her successes, Gangaji continued to experience a deep and persistent longing for fulfillment. She pursued many paths to change her life including relationship, motherhood, political activism, career, and spiritual practice, but even the greatest of her successes ultimately came up short. In the wake of her disillusionment, she made a final prayer for true help. In 1990, the answer to her prayer came unexpectedly, taking her to India and to the meeting that would change everything. There on the banks of the river Ganga, she met Sri HWL Poonja, also known as Papaji, who opened the floodgates of self-recognition. In this meeting, Gangaji's personal story of suffering ended and the promise of a true life began to flower and unfold. Today, Gangaji travels the world speaking to seekers from all walks of life. A teacher and author, she shares her direct experience of the essential message ...

Rupert Spira - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
From an early age Rupert Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality. For twenty years he studied the teachings of PDOuspensky, J.Krishnamurti, Rumi, Shankaracharya, Ramana Maharshi, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Robert Adams, until he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, in 1996. Francis introduced Rupert to the teachings of Jean Klein and Atmanada Krishnamenon and, more importantly, directly indicated to him the true nature of experience. His two books, The Transparency of Things, (sub-titled Contemplating the Nature of Experience), and Presence, in two volumes (The Art of Peace and Happiness and The Intimacy of All Experience), are a profound exploration of the non-dual nature of experience. Rupert lives in UK and holds regular meetings and retreats in Europe and USA. For all further information see www.rupertspira.com. Interview recorded 11

"The True Self" as Revealed by the Buddha in the Mahaparinirvana Sūtra
The celebrated Beethoven interpreter and avant-garde composer, Artur Schnabel (1882-1951), once famously quipped: "Tradition too often means a collection of bad habits." ("My Life and Music", Artur Schnabel). This applies not only to traditions of music-making, but equally, I would contend, sometimes to traditions of scholarship. If one were to ask most students and scholars of Buddhism what the Buddha's teachings on the Self or Soul were, I think it likely that one would almost certainly receive back the stock, unqualified reply: "The Buddha denied the Self or Soul (the ātman) and any kind of enduring essence (svabhāva). He utterly rejected and refuted all notions of a permanent Self or Soul, both in the Pāli suttas and in the Mahāyāna scriptures." This stance towards the Self in the Buddha's doctrines is now effectively the "received wisdom" amongst the bulk of Buddhist scholars and Buddhist practitioners -- it has become the habit of Tradition and is rarely questioned. But is it -- to quote Schnabel -- a "bad habit"? Is the absolutist and almost autonomic cry of "no Self, no Self" in fact uttered as enthusiastically, unconditionally and universally by the purported Mahāyāna Buddha as by large numbers of his followers? I suggest that it is not. And to examine how we can perhaps break our possible bad habit of an all-but blanket denial of affirmative teachings by the Buddha on the reality of an eternal Self, we might profitably give our attention to the famed -- yet in ...

Michael Baxter - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
bax (or baxishta if he's feeling uppity) does not consider himself fully awakened, but knows for sure that he's recognized glimpses of the self. He says this puts him in an awkward position, and insists on starting off with this apology, if what i've seen is true then i'm a hypocrite every time i speak about it no better than the man who having awoken briefly from his dream rushes back to tell his friends what he saw "you're all in my mind" he informs them and they laugh at him twice once for being obviously wrong and once for being right and therefore talking to himself my only defense is that even hypochondriacs do get sick and even hypocrites do awaken briefly bax's motto is "self is solid", and he considers himself a student of Ramana Maharshi, whose favorite description of the self was "a dense mass of self-knowledge". he considers himself a post-new age thinker, and feels that most of what is discussed today goes only halfway to Shankara's great 'three laws of self-knowledge'. Specifically, much is said about consciousness but not very much about the self itSelf. In order to try to put readings and experiences into a context for himself, he developed a graphic model which he calls The Cycle of Self-Knowledge. The gist of it is that every thought passes through all the stages of finding and losing self-knowledge, and that it's easy to identify milestone experiences along the cycle, which may make it easier to recognize the frequent glimpses of the self which we're ...

Also see batgap.com Neelam, a native of Poland, has been giving Satsang internationally since 1996. She is a direct disciple of HWL Poonja (Papaji), who himself awakened to the truth in the presence of Sri Ramana Maharshi. Neelam shares Satsang with Papaji's blessing. Known for her simplicity, skillful discrimination, and intuitive insight, Neelam gently points toward the truth at the core of us all. With her extensive personal and teaching experience, she uses inquiry to facilitate us in identifying and moving through deep-seated patterns of conditioning, bringing us to rest in Presence. Self Inquiry is the very core of this teaching and is based on Sri Ramana Maharshi's guidelines for Self Inquiry. Neelam's unique development of inquiry includes both recognizing our true nature and meeting our conditioning fully, with tenderness. Neelam's website: neelam.org Interview recorded 4

Also see batgap.com After devoting a lifetime to healing and awakening himself and others utilizing therapy, Transcendental and other Meditations, energy and bodywork, 12-step programs, Rebirthing, Shamanic Journey, Soul Retrieval, DNA Activation, Sacred Spirit Healing and esoteric Hindu, Vedic, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Kahuna and Native-American practices, and, ultimately, pretty much giving up on himself for this lifetime as just too damaged, Mark Landau was gifted with divine guidance to co-create the tool that did for him what nothing else could. He now facilitates healing circles and sessions. He has a Masters in Linguistics and is ordained as an Interfaith Minister and Spiritual Counselor. He worked very closely with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of Transcendental Meditation, and studied and worked with four other teachers. By 2002, he had worked with thousands of people worldwide and had one book published and a growing following as a spiritual teacher. But his inner life didn't reflect this, so he stopped. On 4/29/12, the day after his sixty-sixth birthday, he discovered a technique that finally brought about what he always wanted. He offers it freely to everyone and lives in Santa Fe. Isaac Shapiro - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
Isaac Shapiro is an internationally known facilitator, fascinated with life lived in alignment with the world's wisdom traditions. He enjoys exploring and assisting those who share this interest. How do we live our lives moment by moment? This enquiry considers how we relate to ourselves and to others, how we parent, do business and interact with our environment. His approach is to ask questions and make statements. He asks participants in his meetings to question and see if what he says is true in their own being. This approach points to what is already known, but obscured in the ways our nervous system and our thinking function. Isaac draws on a broad spectrum of understanding, from neurophysiology to some of the latest discoveries in Quantum physics which he applies in a light hearted but direct way. "All we have is the sensory experience of this moment, NOW. This moment is only an experience to us. That's all we have. The world, time, space, our own bodies and each other are all an experience to us." "Through noticing how our cells respond in the experience of now, there is a noticing of the production of not only the sense of reality but also the sense of self that we believe we have." Through years of working with people, Isaac has cultivated and refined an ability to track what is happening in the nervous system of participants. Bringing this awareness to peoples attention, allows our natural, innate self-regulating mechanism to be re-established. We all have ...

Bob Nickel - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
Also see batgap.com Satsang with Bob Nickel is a great opportunity to be with someone who points to the pure truth of Awakening in a simple and clear way. One of the recent attendees at Bob's satsang wrote, "I was deeply moved by Bob's blissful presence as well as the clear insight he is able to share with everyone into the deeper truths of life and ourselves. I could feel that Bob speaks from his own personal experience, those same truths shared through the ages by many of the great sages." Bob has been freely sharing in the non-dual Advaita tradition since 2004. He experienced his first spiritual epiphany at the age of nineteen, followed later by other special experiences. In recent years it has become clear to Bob that all experiences, which by nature come and go, have nothing whatsoever to do with the Truth that one essentially Is. His satsangs are dedicated solely to making Ramana Maharshi's invitation to Self-Inquiry available to everyone, as a direct and immediate means to Self Knowledge, inviting all to simply abide effortlessly as That which one is, right here and right now. Bob has been traveling back and forth between India and the US since 1999, living in India during the fall and winter months at the foot of the holy mountain, Arunachala, near the ashram of Sri Ramana Maharshi. He has been traveling the rest of the year holding satsang where invited to do so. Cancer has returned to Bob's body. When he left for India in late April, 2011, his doctors said he ...
