Peloponnese, Greece: Magnificent Monemvasia
Often referred to as the "Gibraltar of Greece," Monemvasia is a virtual showcase of Byzantine, Turkish, and Venetian history dating back to the 13th century. Worth climbing: the steep zigzag path that leads up and up, out of the lower town, to ruins of the fortified upper town, and sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea. Peloponnese, Greece: Rugged Mani Peninsula
While most visitors to Greece's Peloponnese enjoy the same tourist stops, a three-hour drive takes you off the beaten path to the timless and rustic south coast. Its southernmost point, the Mani Peninsula, still harbors remote corners where centuries-old art is tucked away, and where the curious traveler can be alone with a bit of bygone culture. Greece Peloponnese 001
Driving around Peloponnese Greece 2006. Rented a care in Athens. The 1st day to Corinth and then Nafplio for the night. The Peloponnese or Peloponnesus (Greek: Πελοπόννησος) is a large peninsula and region in southern Greece, forming the part of the country south of the Gulf of Corinth. The peninsula is divided among three distinct peripheries of modern Greece: most of the Peloponnese and parts of the West Greece and Attica peripheries. The Peloponnese covers an area of some 21549 km² (8320 square miles) and constitutes the southernmost part of mainland Greece. While technically it may be considered an island since the construction of the Corinth Canal in 1893 - like other peninsulas that have been separated from their mainland by man-made bodies of waters - it is rarely, if ever, referred to as an "island". It has two land connections with the rest of Greece, a natural one at the Isthmus of Corinth and an artificial one in the shape of the Rio-Antirio bridge (completed 2004). The peninsula has a mountainous interior and deeply indented coasts, with Mount Taygetus its highest point. It possesses four south-pointing peninsulas, Messenia, the Mani Peninsula, Cape Malea (also known as Epidaurus Limera), and the Argolid in the far northeast of the Peloponnese. Two groups of islands lie off the Peloponnesan coast: the Argo-Saronic Islands to the east and the Ionian Islands to the west. The island of Kythira, off the Epidaurus Limera peninsula to the south of the Peloponnese ...

Mani peninsula, Peloponnese, Greek
( video 2000, Mani peninsula, Peloponnese, Greece). Mani, the southernmost and middle peninsula of the Peloponnese or Morea, straddling the districts of Lakonia and Messenia in southern Greece, is a treasure trove of Byzantine and post Byzantine churches, Frankish castles and stunning scenery. The isolated aspect of this beautiful area, combined with the independent nature of its inhabitants meant that some traditions developed separately from the rest of the Peloponnese and Greece so that a distinct society made its mark on the landscape. To this day the architecture of the area is famed for the tower houses and fortified family dwellings from the period of the Ottoman occupation of Greece.

17. The Peloponnesian War, Part I
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Kagan describes the events that lead up the Peloponnesian War. He argues that the rise of Athenian power and the concomitant challenge to Spartan dominance pointed to potential conflict. However, Professor Kagan also points out that there were many people who did not want war and that therefore war was not inevitable. The Thirty Years Peace was negotiated, and Professor Kagan finally argues that its clause for arbitration was the key clause that could have prevented war. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Importance of the Peloponnesian War and Its Continuing Value 09:25 - Chapter 2. The Origins of the War 23:37 - Chapter 3. Athens Faces a Critical Decision 30:31 - Chapter 4.
