EurActiv article: www.euractiv.com The Single Market is considered by many as the biggest European achievement since the Union was created. It was born 20 years ago to ensure EU citizens can live, work, study or shop in any country. With more than 500 million consumers, EU businesses are also free to sell their goods and services anywwhere across the continent. Today, the European Commission believes that the single market holds the key to get Europe out of the crisis. European Commission's vice-president Michel Barnier on Wednesday put forward new proposals to further develop the single market. The plan aims at increasing growth, employment and confidence in the EU. 'I am very happy to confirm that this morning, the college adopted the Single market act II. This is a collective piece of work and it is a very important piece of work. It is the follow up to the first stage of the single market act which we presented a year ago in a context of very lucid diagnosis of the internal market which Mario Monti had carried out', said Commissioner for Internal Market Michel Barnier. Improving cross-border mobility of citizens and business across Europe or the digital economy are some of the new proposals. Barnier expects five of the 12 proposals to be adopted by the end of the year "if there is political will". 'Now, we think that 5 of these 12 proposals, if the political willing is there in the Council and the Parliament, these five could be adopted by the end of this year; the ...

Rebels in Congo, known as M23, who UN experts say, are backed by neighbouring Rwanda, have reached the outskirts of the eastern city of Goma after pushing back government troops, despite UN peacekeepers returning fire from helicopter gunships. The rebels are led by mutinying soldiers who rose up eight months ago, accusing the Democratic Republic of Congo's government of failing to respect a 2009 peace agreement to integrate insurgents from a previous rebellion into the army. However the heavily armed DFC are waiting and looking for any signs of violence from the rebels While the fear of an imminent conflict between the two sides is scaring local residents who are fearful of Goma falling into rebel hands. PKK prison hunger strike clashes in Turkey: Clashes have broken out between Kurdish protesters and police in south-eastern Turkey over a hunger strike by Kurdish prisoners, most of whom are serving sentences for alleged links to the rebel separatist group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party. Shops were boarded up and children kept from school in support of the protest. Around 900 prison inmates have been refusing food for nearly two months in protest over the arrests of hundreds of Kurdish activists, lawyers and academics and are demanding better living conditions for the PKK's incarcerated leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who is being held on the prison island of Imrali. Over a hundred inmates died and hundreds more were left permanently crippled in a hunger strike that began in 2000. In his first public comment on the hunger strike, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said that his government would not be held to ransom by "merchants of death". Over 40000 people have died in violence between PKK rebels and government forces since the group was set up in 1984. Clashes have intensified over the past few months, with Erdogan accusing Syria of arming rebel separatists in retaliation for his government's criticism of the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy uprisings by Damascus 19 months ago. Turkish and Syrian forces have been exchanging cross-border fire over the past month as fears mount over potential spillover from the Syrian conflict.

Rocket Attack From Gaza Strip Kills 3 Israelis - Now Over 200 Rockets Hit South Israel and Tel Aviv Militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip killed three Israelis on Thursday in a rocket attack likely to deepen a bruising Israeli air, naval and artillery offensive, the most intense assault on the Palestinian territory in four years. The casualties were the first in Israel since it launched its operation on Wednesday with the assassination of Hamas' top military commander, followed by an onslaught of airstrikes and shelling by tanks and naval gunboats. Eleven Palestinians, including two children and seven militants, have been killed and more than 100 wounded in Gaza since the Israeli operation began. Few in the Palestinian territory's largest urban area, Gaza City, came out following the call for dawn prayers on Thursday, and the only vehicles plying the streets were ambulances and media cars. About 400 angry mourners braved the streets, however, to bury Hamas mastermind Ahmed Jabari, whose body was draped in the green flag of the Islamic militant Hamas movement. Some fired guns in the air and chanted, "God is Great, the revenge is coming." When the body was brought into a mosque for funeral prayers, some tried to touch or kiss it. Others cried. "This crime will not weaken us. It will make us stronger and more determined to continue the path of jihad and resistance," Hamas lawmaker Mushir al-Masri said in a eulogy. "The enemy opened the battle and shall bear the ...
