Tavis Smiley & Cornel West on Election, Why Calling Obama Progressive Ignores His Record 1/2
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. As the most expensive presidential election in US history comes to an end, broadcaster Tavis Smiley and professor, activist Dr. Cornel West join us to discuss President Obama's re-election and their hopes for a national political agenda in and outside of the White House during Obama's second term. At a time when one in six Americans is poor, the price tag for combined spending by federal candidates -- along with their parties and outside groups like super PACs -- totaled more than $6 billion. Together, West and Smiley have written the new book, "The Rich and the Rest of Us A Poverty Manifesto." Watch part 2 of this discussion: youtu.be Both Tavis and Smiley single out prominent progressives whom they accuse of overlooking Obama's actual record. "We believe if [Obama] is not pushed, he is going to be a transactional president and not a transformational president," Smiley says. "We believe the time is now for action and no longer accommodation... To be the most progressive means you've taken some serious risk. And I just don't see the example of that." West says that some prominent supporters of Obama "want to turn their back to poor and working people. It's a sad thing to see them as apologists for the Obama administration in that way." Juan Cole: Real Petraeus Failure Was Counter-Insurgency in Iraq, Afghanistan
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. CIA director David Petraeus has resigned following revelations of an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, a married US Army reservist. "This personal issue that cropped up and ruined his career in the end, I think it's very much a minor thing ... compared to his big exploits in Iraq and Afghanistan," says historian Juan Cole, who responds to the surprise departure of the former head of US forces in Afghanistan, Petraeus retired from 37 years in the military to head the CIA last year. Over the weekend, new revelations suggested Broadwell had sent harassing emails to Jill Kelley, a 37 year-old from Florida and a family friend of Petraeus and his wife, Holly. The FBI launched an inquiry after Kelley said she had received vicious emails from the CIA director's biographer. Its investigation revealed the affair, and led agents to believe Broadwell or someone close to her had sought access to his email. On Sunday, Democracy Now! spoke to Cole about the significance of Petraeus's resignation, and about Malala Yusufzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani activist who was shot in the head by a Taliban militant for demanding the right of girls' education. Cole is professor of history at the University of Michigan and his most recent book is "Engaging the Muslim World." To watch the entire weekday independent news hour ...

Goldman Sachs v. Occupy Wall Street: A Greg Palast Investigation
www.democracynow.org - Democracy Now! talks to investigative reporter Greg Palast about a controversy in the banking community around the Occupy Wall Street movement. Palast investigates the story behind Goldman Sachs' recent decision to pull out of a fundraiser for the Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union in New York City after it learned the event was honoring the protesters at Occupy Wall Street. The investment bank withdrew its name from the fundraiser and also canceled a $5000 pledge. Was the $5000 a Goldman Sachs donation or actually American taxpayer bail-out money Goldman set aside for community banks? "Mea Maxima Culpa": Film Exposes Horror of Catholic Child Sex Abuser, Heroism of His Victims
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. "Mea Maxima Culpa Silence in the House of God," a new documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, investigates how a charismatic priest in Milwaukee abused more than 200 deaf children in a Catholic boarding school under his control. The young students were molested again and again by Father Lawrence Murphy, who stalked them in their dorm rooms at night, on trips to his rural cabin, and even in the confessional booth. Gibney, whose past films include, "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" and the Academy Award-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side," joins us to discuss his new exposé, which opens this Friday in theaters in New York City and Los Angeles, and will debut on HBO in February 2013. BBC Scandal Exposes Cover-Up of Jimmy Savile's Pedophilia, Fueling Public Broadcaster's Foes
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. A major media scandal has toppled the head of the BBC over the network's handling of two reports on sex abuse, wrongly implicating a politician in one, and killing a report on its own popular BBC host, the late Jimmy Savile. One year after his death, Savile is been accused of abusing potentially hundreds of victims while the BBC stayed silent. We're joined by three guests Lark Turner, who has been researching and writing about the BBC scandal involving Jimmy Savile for The New York Times; Tim Gopsill, a longtime British reporter who warns that much of the criticism directed at the BBC's handling of this scandal comes from conservative media outlets in the UK who want to see the network dismantled and de-funded; and Donald Findlater, a sexual abuse spokesperson for the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and director of Stop it Now! Killer Robots: Human Rights Activists Urge Ban on Modern Warfare's Next Frontier
Visit www.democracynow.org for the complete transcript, additional reports on this topic, and more information. Watch the independent, global news hour live weekdays 8-9am ET. Nobel Peace laureate Jody Williams is joining with Human Rights Watch to oppose the creation of killer robots -- fully autonomous weapons that could select and engage targets without human intervention. In a new report, HRW warns such weapons would undermine the safety of civilians in armed conflict; violate international humanitarian law; and blur the lines of accountability for war crimes. Fully autonomous weapons do not exist yet, but high-tech militaries are moving in that direction with the United States taking the lead. Williams, winner of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, joins us along with Steve Goose, director of Human Rights Watch's Arms Division. Gaza Ceasefire to Be Decided in Cairo, But Will US Rein In Israeli Occupation, Blockade?
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is heading to Jerusalem, Ramallah and Cairo today as the Israeli attack on Gaza enters it seventh day. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is also in the region after calling for an immediate ceasefire and warning an Israeli ground operation in Gaza would be a "dangerous escalation" that must be avoided. As ceasefire talks continue in Cairo, Hamas has set two conditions for accepting a cease-fire lifting the military blockade on the Gaza Strip and international assurances that Israel would stop assassinations and other military measures. Joseph Stiglitz: "The Price of Inequality: How Today's Divided Society Endangers our Future"
DemocracyNow.org - Several months before Occupy Wall Street, the Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz wrote, "Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%," an article for Vanity Fair. He returns to the subject in his new book looking at how inequality is now greater in the United States than any other industrialized nation. He notes, that the six heirs of the Wal-Mart fortune command wealth equivalent to the entire bottom 30 percent of American society. "It's a comment both on how well off the top are and how poor the bottom are," Stiglitz says. "It's really emblematic of the divide that has gotten much worse in our society." On Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that pay for the top CEOs on Wall Street increased by more than 20 percent last year. Meanwhile, census data shows nearly one in two Americans, or 150 million people, have fallen into poverty or could be classified as low-income. "The United States is the country in the world with the highest level of inequality [of the advanced industrial countries] and it's getting worse," Stiglitz says. "What's even more disturbing is we've [also] become the country with the least equality of opportunity." "No Place is Safe": After Assault's Worst Day, Gaza Doctor Says Israel Terrorizing Civilians
Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. Over the past week, Israeli strikes have killed at least 116 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the majority of them civilians, including 27 children. Monday's victims included four members of the same family -- two parents and their two toddlers -- who were killed in a bombing of a Gaza refugee camp that also left more than a dozen people injured, mostly women and children. We go to Gaza to speak with Dr. Mona El-Farra, director of Gaza Projects for the Middle East Children's Alliance and the Health Chair of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society of the Gaza Strip. Dr. El-Farra writes about living under siege on her blog, "From Gaza, with Love." Oliver Stone on the Untold US History from Atomic Age, Vietnam to Obama's Drone War 1 of 2
Visit www.democracynow.org for the complete transcript, additional reports on this topic, and more information. Watch the independent, global news hour live weekdays 8-9am ET. Academy Award-winning Oliver Stone has teamed up with historian Peter Kuznick to produce a 10-part Showtime series called, "Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States." Drawing on archival findings and recently declassified documents, the filmmakers critically examine US history -- from the atomic bombing of Japan, to the Cold War, to the fall of Communism, and continuing all the way through to the Obama administration. Contrary to what's taught in schools across the country, the filmmakers found the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were militarily unnecessary and morally indefensible. Watch Part 2 of this interview youtu.be Stone and Kuznick also suggest the Soviet Union, not the United States, ultimately defeated the Germans in World War II. And, they assert the United States, not the Soviet Union, bore the lion's share of responsibility for perpetuating the Cold War. The filmmakers also found US presidents, especially in wartime, have frequently trampled on the Constitution and international law, and they note the United States has brought the world dangerously close to nuclear war by repeatedly brandishing nuclear threats. The first episode of the series aired Monday night on Showtime. For more about this series and the companion book, we are joined by Stone and Kuznick ...

Greenwald: Starting w/ Fiscal Cliff, Obama's 2nd Term Rests on Organizing, Not Cheerleading
Visit www.democracynow.org for the complete transcript, additional reports on this topic, and more information. Watch the independent, global news hour live weekdays 8-9am ET. President Obama will open deficit reduction talks on Friday with a call for a $1.6 trillion tax hike on corporations and the wealthiest Americans over the next 10 years. Obama and House Speaker John Boehner are sitting down to avert the so-called fiscal cliff of expiring tax cuts and automatic spending reductions set to take effect at the end of the year. We're joined by Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald, who says the protection of "entitlement" programs will depend on action from Obama's progressive supporters. "The question is Will the Democratic Party -- specifically the progressive and liberal components -- change its behavior from cheerleader, from blindly supportive partisan apparatchiks ... into some kind of a force where they actually fulfill their duties as citizens, which is to hold political leaders accountable?" Greenwald asks. "No NATO, No War": US Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan Return War Medals at NATO Summit
DemocracyNow.org - Democracy Now! broadcasts from Chicago, site of the largest NATO summit in the organization's six-decade history. On Sunday, veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as members of Afghans For Peace, led a peace march of thousands of people. Iraq Veterans Against the War held a ceremony where nearly 50 veterans discarded their war medals by hurling them down the street in the direction of the NATO summit. We hear the soldiers' voices as they return their medals one by one from the stage. "I am giving back my global war on terror service medal in solidarity with the people of Iraq and Afghanistan," said Jason Heard, a former combat medic who spent 10 years in the US Army. "I am deeply sorry for the destruction that we have caused in these countries and around the globe."
