MIPS: Risking It All on RISC
[Recorded: July 27, 2011] Stanford University President John Hennessy and MIPS colleagues Bob Miller, Skip Stritter and Joe DiNucci will discuss the story of MIPS, a groundbreaking company in the computer industry. In 1981, Hennessy led the Stanford research team that developed a Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) microprocessor that had the potential to dramatically increase performance and reduce costs. Then in 1984, Hennessy joined Skip Stritter and John Mousourris to co-found MIPS Computer Systems to take on the daunting task of bringing a RISC microprocessor to market. Today called MIPS Technologies, it was the world's first commercial RISC chip company and one of the first semiconductor companies who rely on partners to fabricate their chips. The final radical touch: MIPS was a UNIX-based microprocessor, deeply influenced by the needs of the operating system and compilers. Hennessy and team were not just taking on huge hardware and software challenges; they were also taking on Intel, which by then had the dominant market position with its flagship processor family. MIPS became one of the primary enablers of the explosive growth of the workstation market in the late 1980s. Silicon Graphics used powerful MIPS processors in its graphic servers and workstations. Moviegoers saw the results in a new generation of visually stunning blockbusters, including Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Toy Story. Today, MIPS processors are found in networking, telecommunications, video ...

Raspberry Pi running RISC OS 5
I have a stack of old RISC OS machines including an Iyonix. I loved them. Best UI ever and still. But they don't have all the games and hardware of Windows or the internet ability of Linux. So it's been a while since I used one. When I heard a that RISC OS would run on the Pi, I had to try it for myself! Brilliant. Here's me trying it for the second time.

RISC: Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues
Visit: www.risctraining.org Donate to this organization: www.risctraining.org/donate RISC is dedicated to promoting the safety of freelance journalists in combat zones. We train and equip freelance journalists in all media to treat life-threatening injuries on the battlefield. Freelancers comprise the vast majority of those who cover wars, and consequently make up the vast majority of deaths and injuries. Surviving a gunshot or shrapnel wound is often a matter of doing the right thing in the first few minutes, and our training focuses on that brief, critical period of time. It is our hope to make first aid training the industry norm - like having a flak jacket or sat phone - and to prevent unnecessary deaths in a job that is so vital to human dignity and human rights. We are currently raising funds for upcoming sessions in London and Beirut. Please help us provide crucial, life-saving skills to this group of courageous people... without them, we would have far less information available about the troubled times in which we live. Donations can be made online at www.risctraining.org/donate or mailed to RISC c/o The Half King, 505-507 West 23rd Street, New York, NY, 10011.

Firefox vs. NetSurf on RISC OS
This was done on an Acorn RiscPC with a 233 MHz StrongARM. Firefox, quite frankly, is useless on the RPC. Nothing against the port, it seems to be a well done port, it's just that it's the wrong browser for these older machines. If you really need to run Firefox on RISC OS, I suspect an Iyonix would work much better. (Or, for that matter, a BeagleBoard, once RISC OS 5 is ported to it.) Sorry about the video quality. CRTs suck.
