György Ligeti - Hungarian Rock
Hungarian Rock (Chaconne), for harpsichord (1978) Adaptation for Barrel Organ by Pierre Charial This is one of Ligeti's most famous pieces, a tour de force of rhythm and sound-textures. A "chaconne" is a particular variation form, in which a chord pattern is repeated while variations on it are played simultaneously. In the words "a chord pattern is repeated" you have the basis of a reference to rock music, for just that kind of structure is often used in rock (and in jazz, too, for that matter). The work, lasting about five minutes, is in a two-part form. The main structure consists of a pounding rhythmic pattern of chords in rock rhythm (one of the chords is so low and closely-spaced that it fills the function of the bass drum), while the plucked sonority of the instrument is exploited in the melodic line, as this resembles guitar sounds. The second part ceases the rhythmic idea, and serenely presents a chord progression. [allmusic.com]

In Practice | Jeremy Denk: György Ligeti's Piano Etudes
See more musicians In Practice: www.npr.org Jeremy Denk has his own personal "piano boot camp." Actually, it's his cramped Manhattan apartment. Beside his beloved books, a trusty coffee pot and a laptop, there's not much to do except practice. Which Denk does, hours and hours a day on a Steinway wedged into his living room. On a good day, he brews pot of coffee number one at about 11, then plays for about five hours. Perhaps a run to the gym, then pot number two is brewed at about 6, followed by more playing — until the neighbors complain. When we invaded his "camp" he was seriously practicing the piano etudes of György Ligeti. His music is "continuous madness," Denk says. "Wonderful, joyful madness." Denk has a great talent for making you fall in love with the most complex music, letting it sound completely natural. He admits, "I'm atuned to the weirdnesses. I guess that's something I like about music that's on the edge of destroying itself." György Ligeti - Piano Concerto, III-V
Piano Concerto (1985-1988) I. Vivace molto ritmico e preciso II. Lento e deserto III. Vivace cantabile IV. Allegro risoluto, molto ritmico V. Presto luminoso Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano Asko Ensemble Reinbert de Leeuw György Ligeti completed his Piano Concerto in 1988. It is in five movements, twenty-five minutes in duration, and perhaps the finest concerto from the 1980s. In the late 1960s and early 1970s the composer wrote many successful concertos. In these earlier works, Ligeti was writing extremely dense and dissonant works in a style that utilized micropolyphony, a method of writing he created where numerous independent melodic lines become a larger, sonorous mass of sound. Ligeti had acquired enough listeners and imitators to be at the forefront of the avant-garde. Then in the late 1970s he suffered a heart condition that made him incapable of composing for years. When he returned to health in the 1980s the music he was writing was different, in some ways returning to his original love of Bartók which preceded his period of micropolyphony compositions. Ligeti's Piano Concerto is a super-modern piano concerto, featuring all the knowledge and musicality of a brilliant composer who had carefully absorbed the musical lessons and currents of the twentieth century. It eludes serialism but does not shy completely away from the sonorities associated with it. Ligeti and Boulez were good friends, and Boulez often conducted and recorded Ligeti's. It is interesting that ...
