Madurai - TamilNadu - South India - 2011
www.oochappan.be Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the Sangam period of the pre Christian era. The glory of Madurai returned in a diminished form in the earlier part of this millennium; it later on came under the rule of the Vijayanagar kingdom after its ransack by the ravaging armies of Delhi (Malik Kafur). During the 16th and 18th centuries, Madurai was ruled by the Nayak Emperors, the foremost of whom was Tirumalai Nayakar. The Sangam period poet Nakkeerar is associated with some of the Tiruvilayaadal episodes of Sundareswarar - that are enacted as a part of temple festival traditions even today. The Sangam age or the Golden age of Tamil literature -- produced masterpieces way back in the Pre christian era and in early 1st millennium . Madurai was the seat of the Tamil Sangam or Academy of learning. The entire city of Madurai, is built around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple -- the temple par excellence. Concentric rectangular streets surround the temple, symbolizing the structure of the cosmos. Many people come to Madurai to visit the famous Meenakshi Temple and the Jallikattu but the real high points of Madurai life you will find on the countryside and around the temple in the city. photos Madurai : www.flickr.com

Making Madurai: Temple Arts in Early Modern South India
Annual Lecture on the Arts of South and Southeast Asia Making Madurai: Temple Arts in Early Modern South India Crispin Branfoot, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London The ancient city of Madurai seen today owes a great deal to the Nayakas, who ruled over the far south of India for two centuries until 1736. During their reign, many new temples were built, and older ones renovated and expanded. Examine the architecture, sculpture, and painting of this period in relation to both the fragmented political authority of the great Vijayanagar Empire and the older Tamil Pandya traditions. This lecture is made possible by the generous support of Jeff Soref and Paul Lombardi, Jeff Soref Fund of the Stonewall Community Foundation.

Coronation as the 293rd Pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam Part - 1
27th April 2012 at Bidadi ashram,India. In a landmark event in the history of Indian religious tradition, HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda has been declared as the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam, the world's most ancient living Hindu religious organization. Guru Maha Sannidhanam Srila Sri Arunagirinatha Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Paramacharya Swamigal, the 292nd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam, declared HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda as his successor at an auspicious ceremony held in Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam's international headquarters in Bidadi near Bangalore. According to Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy, everything is preordained according to the judgment of Lord Shiva. Referring to HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda as 'a noble gift of Lord Shiva' and 'the avatar of saint Tirujnana Sambandhar', the current pontiff declared HH Nithyananda as the ambassador to the Almighty, appointed by the eternal Government of Lord Shiva. There is no tenure for this position and it is a lifetime honor. Accepting the sacred honor, HH Paramahamsa Nithyananda said, "With all humbleness for divine grace I hereby declare that I accept the responsibility given to me... as the 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhanam of Madurai Aadheenam... I vow...we will fulfil all the responsibilities of Madurai Aadheenam, making the Shaiva tradition revived and celebrated all over the world... I also commit to Madurai Aadheenam Guru Maha Sannidhanam... that we will make Madurai Aadheenam as an international religious organization."

Madurai Aadheenam & Vedic tradition
In 11th May 2012 morning satsang, Paramahamsa Nithyananda (Swamiji) reveals the original philosophy of Madurai Adheenam. A number of monastic communities have attributed the foundation of Madurai Adheenam to Saiva Siddhanta, the Shiva-Wisdom school of Hindu spiritual practice. Paramahamsa's research has demonstrated differently, however. He has examined the writings of Jnanasambhandar, the saint who brought Madurai Adheenam to its full glory, and nowhere in those writings is there any mention of Saiva Siddhanta. The only philosophical reference is to Vedic tradition, which is consistent with the mystical understanding that the community was created by Shiva and Devi themselves in their incarnations of Chokanathur and Meenakshi. Saiva Siddhanta did not actually take shape as a philosophy until nearly 800 years after the life of Jnanasambhandar. Thus, Madurai Adheenam is founded purely on Vedic tradition. Paramahamsa declares his dedication to restoring this honorable heritage and infusing it with new relevance for our lives today.

Madurai Adheenam: Philosophy & History of Madurai Adheenam
Today's morning satsang with Paramahamsa Nithyananda is his first presentation from Madurai Adheenam, where he assumes his ecclesiastical seat as 293rd pontiff. Paramahamsa explains to us that Madurai Adheenam is the most ancient organization on Planet Earth, dating far back before recorded history. He will retrieve that unwritten history through his Akashic Readings, during which he downloads the cosmic truth of world events. Today he relates how the founders of the Adheenam (religious community) were Shiva and Devi Themselves in their first appearance in human form. Devi appeared as Meenakshi, who became the queen of Madurai, and Shiva took form as her husband Soma Sundareshwara. Paramahamsa clarifies that they were not incarnations, in which the human body inhabited by God is carried in an earthly womb. Rather they transformed themselves from higher formless realms into the semblance of human shape, by passing through fire which transforms all things. The spirit of Meenakshi descended from her divine space through the fire into what appeared to be a human child of three years. She did not assume human physiology, but maintained a human appearance throughout her life on Earth.

[HD] Meenakshi Temple Madurai India -Ancient Hindu Architecture
Trip Report: vivekananddisciple.blogspot.in Madurai, Tamilnadu, Inida : Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple or Tiru-alavai is a historic Hindu temple located in the south side of river Vaigai in the temple city of Madurai. It is dedicated to Parvati who is known as Meenakshi and her consort, Shiva, named here as Sundareswarar (beautiful deity). The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old city of Madurai. The complex houses 14 gopurams (gateway towers) ranging from 45-50m in height, the tallest being the southern tower, 51.9 metres (170 ft) high, and two golden sculptured vimana (shrine) over sanctum of the main deities There is an estimated 33000 sculptures in the temple and it was in the list of top 30 nominees of the "New Seven Wonders of the World". The temple is the geographic and ritual center of the ancient city of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in Tamil Nadu. The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonary walls. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu to have four entrances facing four directions. Vishwantha Nayaka allegedly redesigned the city of Madurai in accordance with the principles laid down by Shilpa Shastras(Sanskrit: śilpa śāstra, also anglicized as silpa sastra meaning rules of architecture) relevant to urban planning. The city was laid out in the shape of square with a series of concentric streets culminating from the temple. These ...

TV9 - Nithyananda declared 293rd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam - Devotees Dance...! Ramanagara: Self-styled godman Nityananda, who is facing criminal cases, was declared 293rd pontiff of "Madurai Aadheenam", an ancient Hindu religious organisation, at Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam in Bidadi in the district. He was declared the 293rd pontiff by Arunagirinatha Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Paramacharya Swamigal, the 292nd pontiff of the Aadheenam. "We hereby coronate him with the title His Holiness the 293rd Guru Maha Sannidhanam Srila Sri Paramahamsa Nithyananda Sri Gnanasambanda Desika Paramacharya Swamigal", he told reporters. He also declared Nithyananda as his lawful successfor to deal with all movable and immovable properties of the Adheenam, which includes over 1250 acres of land, several temples and properties in India and abroad. The Madurai Aadheenam has existed since time immemorial. However, it was revived around 1500 years ago by Tirujnana Sambandar, one of the four visionary saints of South Indian Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy. The Aadheenam's history dates to the Tamil Sangam period. The presiding deities of Madurai are Shiva and Devi in their incarnations as Chokkanathar and Meenakshi, enshrined in the famous Madurai Meenakshi-Sundareshwara temple. Nithyananda vowed to fulfil all responsibilities of the Aadheenam, revive the Shaiva tradition and also make the Aadheenam an international religious organisation. Nityananda had landed in controversy after a video footage ...
