Power and Promise of Stem Cells In Conversation with Angie Coiro July 21, 2013 2:00 p.m. New Venture Hall How close are we to being able to harness the body's own healing powers, to unveiling the mystery of the stem cell and its power for regenerating tissue that is healthy, and repairing tissue that is diseased or damaged? Uta Grieshammer PhD is a developmental biologist by training and now a Science Officer at CIRM (California Institute for Regenerative Medicine). Harry Blount, Founder & CEO, DISCERN In conversation with Angie Coiro Sunday, April 7, 2013 2:00 p.m. New Venture Hall The 30-year old spreadsheet is no match for the tsunami of information available today; yet it remains the primary tool for decision-makers. The Tech Connects: The Physical Lincoln
The Tech Connects: The Physical Lincoln
Presentation followed by conversation with Angie Coiro and booksigning Sunday, June 23, 2013 2:00 p.m. New Venture Hall Buy tickets Abraham Lincoln was a very unusual looking man. Yes, he was tall -- six feet four inches -- but there was more: his arms were too long, he was impossibly skinny, his hands were disproportionately large, and his face was homely and "warty." Dr. John Sotos, Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, will review these signs and others showing that Lincoln had a very specific problem in his DNA: a rare hereditary cancer disorder called MEN2B. He will show that Lincoln had less than a year to live when he was shot, that three of Lincoln's four sons had the disease, and that understanding Lincoln the man is impossible without understanding the physical Lincoln. If this sounds like a case from the television show, "House, MD," that is not coincidence. For six seasons Dr. Sotos was a medical technical advisor to the show.
