Beluga Whale Video Clip 1 | Storyteller Media
The beluga whale is a small, toothed whale that is white as an adult.
Beluga means "white one" in Russian.
It is estimated that there are about 40,000 to 80,000 beluga whales world wide. St. Lawrence, Cook Inlet, and Alaskan belugas are classified as endangered. Belugas are threatened by pollution (DDT, PCB's, etc.) in estuary waters that they frequent and breed in.
They have the most sophisticated bio sonar of all.

Allya the Beluga whale at an aquarium in western Japan has learned to blow bubble rings. In the wild, some dolphins and whales blow bubble rings by inhaling air through their blowholes and releasing it through their mouths underwater. But thanks to scuba diving equipment, Allya can do it anytime.
Allya clearly loves interacting with her audience. She aims the bubbles at spectators as they peer in through the glass.

Discover the Beluga Whales at Arctic Watch
Imagine stepping outside onto the shore at low tide and being 10 feet from beluga whales. Imagine the magical sounds ranging from high-pitched whistles to low, repeated grunts that these vocal animals make. Some of the best whale watching in the world takes place at Arctic Watch Wildness Lodge in Nunavut. View these creatures in their natural habitat, as more than 2000 beluga whales congregate in the Cunningham Inlet from early July to mid-August.
Visit http://www.arcticwatch.ca for more information on whale watching and how to experience the trip of a lifetime at Arctic Watch.

Tiqa the baby beluga plays with an American Dipper
A delightful and very touching friendship between a baby Beluga whale and a small bird - an American Dipper - filmed in the Vancouver Aquarium. The baby Beluga calf (I'm told it's Tiqa) spends over four minutes playfully approaching a small bird feeding at the waters edge. It squirts water at the busily feeding bird, opens its jaws, clicks and vocalizes, and gives every evidence of enjoying the encounter. The bird, for its part, seems quite unconcerned, giving no evidence of fear or discomfort, and I guess we can learn that if such diverse creatures can get on so well with each other, shouldn't we humans try just a little harder to do the same.

Beethoven the Beluga Whale (Whale Sounds)
Beethoven is an Awesome Mammal!
This video gives a glimpse into the amazing connection between Beethoven -- a 15 year old, 1500 pound Beluga whale -- and his keepers at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington. After an unfortunate turn of events, Beethoven is the only Beluga at the aquarium, and it has been determined that he will be sent to a breeding program in Texas. This video is intended as a remembrance of Beethoven, as an animal ambassador, a good natured being who accepted captivity and flourished, and the years he spent in Washington state bringing smiles to the many people who visited him.
Update: I so enjoy hearing from the folks in San Antonio and whereeverabouts, giving me updates on how and where Beethoven is. My last one was that, if I recall correctly, that Mr. B has been set up on some dates ... wink, wink, nudge, nudge ... with female Beluga Whales.
Enjoy this fellow if you ever have a chance. He is truly amazing. To know Beethoven is to love him.

For the first time, researchers have shown that a whale can mimic human speech, with a kazoo-like, slightly unhinged call that you can listen to above.
The special whale in question, NOC, was a beluga who lived at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in California. In 1984, workers noticed bizarre, human-like sounds coming from an enclosure. Eventually, they traced them back to the NOC when a startled man working in his tank leapt out and asked, "Who told me to get out?"
NOC did, researchers concluded. Acoustic analysis later showed sounds much different than the ones whales typically make, with low frequencies closer to human speech. NOC apparently used elaborate nasal and muscle movements to mimic his captors.
Dolphins have previously been shown to have a similar ability, but NOC, who died five years ago, is the first whale. Though given their reputation as "canaries of the sea" and their fondness for Mariachi bands, perhaps it isn't surprising that a beluga would also one day try to speak.
