Stephen Fry & friends on the life, loves and hates of Christopher Hitchens - IQ2 talks
hitchfry.intelligencesquared.com In this historic event, Stephen Fry and other friends of Christopher Hitchens came together to celebrate the life and work of this great writer, iconoclast and debater. Fry was joined on stage at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall by Richard Dawkins and the two discussed Hitch's unflinching commitment to the truth. Hollywood actor Sean Penn was beamed in from LA by Google+ and, between cigarette puffs, read from Hitch's acclaimed work, The Trial of Henry Kissinger. Five friends of Hitch spoke via satellite in New York: satirist Christopher Buckley and editor Lewis Lapham mused on Hitch's prowess as a journalist. 'Like a pot of gold', said Lapham. Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and James Fenton delighted the audience with stories of Hitchens as a young man. Rushdie drew roars of laughter when he recounted a word game invented by Amis and Hitchens where the word 'love' is replaced with 'hysterical sex'. Particular favourites included Hysterical Sex in the Time of Cholera and Hysterical Sex Is All You Need. Watching the event with Hitch at his bedside in Texas, Hitch's wife Carol and novelist Ian McEwan provided an email commentary. 'His Rolls Royce mind is still purring beautifully', typed McEwan. The event was watched live by 2500 at the venue, and by thousands more in UK cinemas and online.

The Skip - James Fenton
The Skip I took my life and threw it on the skip, Reckoning the next-door neighbours wouldn't mind If my life hitched a lift to the council tip With their dry rot and rubble. What you find With skips is - the whole community joins in. Old mattresses appear, doors kind of drift Along with all that won't fit in the bin And what the bin-men can't be fished to shift. I threw away my life, and there it lay And grew quite sodden. `What a dreadful shame,' Clucked some old bag and sucked her teeth: 'The way The young these days ... no values ... me, I blame...' But I blamed no one. Quality control Had loused it up, and that was that. 'Nough said. I couldn't stick at home. I took a stroll And passed the skip, and left my life for dead. Without my life, the beer was just as foul, The landlord still as filthy as his wife, The chicken in the basket was an owl, And no one said: `Ee, Jim-lad, whur's thee life?' Well, I got back that night the worse for wear, But still just capable of single vision ; Looked in the skip; my life - it wasn't there! Some bugger'd nicked it - without my permission. Okay, so I got angry and began To shout, and woke the street. Okay. Okay! And I was sick all down the neighbour's van. And I disgraced myself on the par-kay. And then ... you know how if you've had a few You'll wake at dawn, all healthy, like sea breezes, Raring to go, and thinking: `Clever you! You've got away with it.' And then, oh Jesus, It hits you. Well, that morning, just at six I woke, got ...

"God, A Poem" by James Fenton (poetry reading)
America and Britain are countries divided by a common language. I think Oscar Wilde said that, but I haven't checked. A girl told me she had spent a morning in New York trying to buy Drawing Pins. She visited several stores which looked as though they should stock them. Eventually out of exasperation she explained what she wanted them for. The sales girl said "Why don't you use thumbtacks?" Figuratively, crumpet is a collective term for women considered as sexual snacks. Literally, a crumpet is a teacake usually toasted and buttered and possibly spread with jam or marmalade. Pissed always means "drunk" in Britain - it never means "angry", but "pissed-off" means "disgruntled" or "frustrated". Soteriology is the theological idea that finding Jesus will save your soul. The Diet of Worms is just a joke in the poem. Its other meaning is one of several venues that took place at Worms, which is a town in Germany on the Rhine. Usually it means the one when Martin Luther answered to charges of heresies brought by the Roman Catholic Church. Martin Luther prayed and fasted and answered honestly and bravely and when it became obvious that this wasn't going to work he ran away. en.wikipedia.org Maybe he had heard the wise saying of the Indigenous American people - or whatever this week's politically-correct expression is for Red Indians - "If you meet a bear, do nothing. If that doesn't work, run away. The painting is "The Eternal Father", 1570, by Paolo Veronese (Caliari)

"In Paris With You" by James Fenton (poetry reading)
I lived in Paris for while in the Rue d'Odessa, which is close to the Gare Montparnasse. I liked French girls, because if they liked me they'd to go to bed immediately. I also liked other things about them, their unabashability, their insouciance, their body hair. Irish girls at the time were not so uncomplicated. You'll recognise the "Dejeuner" by Renoir and "The Lovers" by Picasso. The other paintings are obviously modern. Why obviously? Well, because the artist has a camera with a wide angle lens and paints from photographs The unaided eye doesn't see things in such perspective. www.ejpaprocki.com This is the best study and analysis I could find on-line: helpmewithenglish.co.uk

SILENCE OF DEATH directed by Mani Nasry (16MM FILM) 1ST YEAR RYERSON UNIVERSITY STUDENT FILM

www.imdb.me/maninasry
This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Our imaginations had behaved like a super fertilizer and grown a grotesque monstrosity in our minds. Remember, our imaginations are incredibly powerful. They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.
