The Tryfan Project (Part 2)
After devising the project to accurately resurvey Tryfan, we contacted Alun Pugh, Director of The Snowdonia Society, inviting this organisation to participate in this project with us. We met in early October 2009 to discuss the project at the Society's offices at Ty Hyll, the Ugly House, midway between Betws-y-coed and Capel Curig. Afterwards we documented our thoughts about our collaboration on film. This is the second of a planned weekly instalment of clips all about The Tryfan Project.

The Tryfan Project (Part 3)
Four months after our first meeting at Ty Hyll, the Ugly House, we arranged to meet there again with Alun Pugh of The Snowdonia Society and the BBC's Chris Dearden. The intervening months between these meetings had brought much discussion, but it wasn't until the second meeting that the fundamentals of the survey time and ideal date were set. We filmed our thoughts about the projects progression shortly afterward. This is the third of a planned weekly instalment of clips all about The Tryfan Project.

The Tryfan Project (Part 15)
The day of reconnaissance was vital to the success of this project. Time spent at the summit ascertaining the highest point and best positioning of the surveying equipment would save us significant time on the day of the survey. With the added bulk and weight of all necessary surveying gear, we decided the ascent from Ogwen Cottage to Bwlch Tryfan and up the mountains south ridge to be the most prudent.

The Tryfan Project (Part 30)
After months of planning, the day of the survey had arrived. At the end of it would Tryfan retain its 3000 ft status? Mark Greaves, the Geodesic Analyst from, and a representative of, the Ordnance Survey, accompanied us on the day. Mark is one of the countries leading authorities on GPS technology. He explains the reason for our lengthy data collection vigil and the procedure of post processing awaiting us in the valley below.

The day of reconnaissance was vital to the success of this project. Time spent at the summit ascertaining the highest point and best positioning of the surveying equipment would save us significant time on the day of the survey. Once the equipment was in position John and Graham had time to explain each procedure we had taken since arriving at the summit.

The Tryfan Project (Part 17)
The day of reconnaissance was vital to the success of this project. Time spent at the summit ascertaining the highest point and best positioning of the surveying equipment would save us significant time on the day of the survey. After establishing which monolith is the higher, we wanted a more accurate height difference between each blocks highest point, for this we needed a volunteer! Damien Robertson offered to help and used an Abney Level to sight from one blocks highest corner over to the other. Many thanks to Damien for granting us permission to share this clip on YouTube and for helping us on the day.

The Tryfan Project (Part 18)
The day of reconnaissance was vital to the success of this project. Time spent at the summit ascertaining the highest point and best positioning of the surveying equipment would save us significant time on the day of the survey. After conducting the Abney Level sighting between the two monoliths, Damien was good enough to accept an offer of an interview as we perched on our respective positions atop Adam and Eve. Many thanks to Damien and Barbara for granting us permission to share this clip on YouTube.

The Tryfan Project (Part 32)
After months of planning, the day of the survey had arrived. At the end of it would Tryfan retain its 3000 ft status? After descending to the Ogwen valley we proceeded to the Snowdonia Society's office at Ty Hyll, the Ugly House, where the summit data was post processed by Mark Greaves, the Geodesic Analyst at the Ordnance Survey. Mark wanted to process the data using different models, the first of which was filmed. The second processing using an improved model came to a figure of 917.51 metres. This figure when converted into imperial measurement meant that Tryfan retained its status as one of the elite mountains in Wales, as it could now boast an accurate, definitive height of 3010 ft!!

The Tryfan Project (Part 21)
The day of reconnaissance was vital to the success of this project. Time spent at the summit ascertaining the highest point and best positioning of the surveying equipment would save us significant time on the day of the survey. With the equipment roped up and securely in position I had the opportunity for using the summit block as central in a panoramic view, before it was time for us to dismantle and safely pack the equipment away.

The day of reconnaissance was vital to the success of this project. Time spent at the summit ascertaining the highest point and best positioning of the surveying equipment would save us significant time on the day of the survey. Arriving at the summit we faced the first difficulty. How exactly do you determine which monolith out of Adam and Eve is the highest?

The Tryfan Project (Part 22)
After months of planning, the day of the survey had arrived. At the end of it would Tryfan retain its 3000 ft status? Logistics dictated we set a date and then waited and hoped for clear, sunny conditions. Unfortunately the morning dawned wet with mist and drizzle for our ascent up to the summit.
