Looking for Love - China
For downloads and more information: www.journeyman.tv Despite China's massive gender gap, successful women in China struggle to get a date. A complex cocktail of cultural hangups has left a generation of men and women without partners and it's getting worse. "Marrying the right man is our biggest dream," one young Chinese girl's song goes. But while the cars and houses are coming easily to China's successful women, marrying their dream man isn't. Despite a gender gap of 118 men for every 100 women, China's conservative dictum is that a woman should not be too independent and that over 28 she's labelled 'leftover'. It means that most successful women struggle to get a date and with a third of China's millionaires now female an increasing number of China's women are prioritising their work life. The result is "200 million singles in China and it keeps growing...", as Johnny Du, the CEO of one of China's top internet dating sites, explains. According to Johnny Du the women also set the bar too high. "Woman are really picky; they want the man to be very rich, young, handsome, educated...". Some parents have become so desperate they are taking details of their single children around "marriage markets". As the ambitions of the West meet the traditions of the East, it's a dangerous cultural hang-up that's causing a social time-bomb. SBS

Communists, Nationalists, and China's Revolutions: Crash Course World History #37
Don't forget! Crash Course posters and t-shirts at www.dftba.com In which John Green teaches you about China's Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China's 20th century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades, and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History. Resources: The Search for Modern China by Jonathan D. Spence ...

China's Mikhail Gorbachev Now Expected
Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Personnel appointment has kicked off in China after the end of the 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress. The role of CCP Central Political-Legal Commission (CPLC) has been downgraded. Shanghai and Chongqing have seen party chief reshuffles. Commentators view the new round of personnel shifts as lacking public scrutiny and legal procedure. In other words, this is another round of power redistribution. A mainlander reveals that the CCP crackdown has not yet abated. And citizens no longer hold out any hope for CCP rule they now only hope for a Chinese Mikhail Gorbachev. After its top power handover, the CCP regime has started other key leadership appointments. On Nov. 20, CCP mouthpiece Xinhua News Agency declared that Sun Zhengcai takes over as Chongqing Party chief, Han Zheng, Shanghai mayor, doubles as the city's Party chief. The current CCP police chief Meng Jianzhu replaces Zhou Yongkang as new head of CCP Central Political-Legal Commission (CPLC). Zhao Leji, CCP Central Committee secretariat, concurrently serves as head of the Central Organization Department. En Guang, a democrat in China, comments on these new personnel assignments. He says, the CCP regime's political consultation system has never gone through a real democratic process. The practice started from the era of Mao Zedong's rule, and remains today. En Guang: "A person can change a system, and vice versa. Both can influence each other ...

Tibetans vs China's Xi Jinping: Gangnam Style
On the eve of the CCP's 18th Party Congress, Students for a Free Tibet and the International Tibet Network release a parody video titled "Tibetans challenge Xi Jinping - Gangnam Style." A takeoff of Korean star Psy's uber-popular Gangnam Style, the video features China's heir apparent as a dimwit -- a big-headed oaf whose only response to Tibetans' growing resistance is to arrest, beat and torture protestors. But Xi -- like the four generations of undemocratic CCP heads before him -- cannot stop Tibetans who are moving beyond fear and challenging the very foundations of Chinese rule in Tibet. Ultimately, the joke is on Xi Jinping, the soon to be leader of the unfree world and a remnant of authoritarian rulers of the past. Xi: Resolve the Tibet crisis now or Tibet will soon become your biggest headache. Join Tibet's Xi Challenge: www.xijinping-tibetchallenge.org About the making of this video: Using the power of humor and theater, this video highlights the cruelty and absurdity of the Chinese government's colonial policies in Tibet that have driven 63 Tibetans to set themselves on fire in protest of Chinese rule; 50 this year alone. It also depicts some of the creative protest tactics being used by Tibetans to challenge China's occupation, including a 2011 boycott of Chinese vegetable vendors. This video will be banned in China and Tibet but Beijing's censors cannot stop the truth from spreading: Xi Jinping, China's 5th generation leader will be the last to rule Tibet ...

Killed for Organs: China's Secret State Transplant Business
It's being called "abhorrent" and a "crime against humanity." Allegations of forced organ harvesting in China started to surface in 2006. Since then, mounting evidence suggests these allegations are true—and even worse than originally suspected. Prisoners of conscience—especially Falun Gong—are being killed for their organs. Starting in 1999, the number of transplant centers in China increased by 300% in just 8 years, even though China has no effective national organ donation system. 1999 was the year the Chinese regime began persecuting adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, sending hundreds of thousands to labor camps. Many of them were never seen again. Transplant medicine was developed to save lives. But in China, innocent people are being killed for their organs—so they can be sold for profit. Increasingly, doctors, congressmen, international politicians, human rights lawyers, journalists, and people around the world are raising awareness about forced organ harvesting. Michael Anti: Behind the Great Firewall of China
Michael Anti (aka Jing Zhao) has been blogging from China for 12 years. Despite the control the central government has over the Internet -- "All the servers are in Beijing" -- he says that hundreds of millions of microbloggers are in fact creating the first national public sphere in the country's history, and shifting the balance of power in unexpected ways. Michael Anti (Zhao Jing), a key figure in China's new journalism, explores the growing power of the Chinese internet. 101 East - China's race for gold
China is home to some of the world's best athletes. At the Beijing Olympics, the country topped the medals table, winning 100 medals in 25 sports, including 51 golds. As the London 2012 Olympics unfold, it is clear that China's state-backed sports system is slowly being overhauled. But change might come too late for some athletes. What does China sacrifice in its relentless pursuit of gold?

The Longest Way 1.0 - walk through China and grow a beard! - TIMELAPSE
Nov.9th 2007 - Nov.13th 2008 // one year on foot // 4646km through China // unlimited beard & hair growth // Homepage: http://www.thelongestway.com // Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CRehage // musical score by The Kingpins (http://www.myspace.com/theoneandonlykingpins) and Zhu Fengbo
Additional info:
- I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now.
- All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
- I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful.
- Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues.
- The songs I used in the video are 1) Zhu Fengbo - "Olive Tree" and 2) The Kingpins - "L'aventurier" - visit the Kingpins website if you want to know more, they are very cool I think.
- This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting.
- The core of this project is in fact my website "http://www.thelongestway.com" where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

China News - August 13, 2012: Gu Trial Speculation and Disputed Waters
In today's China news, an update on the trial of Gu Kailai who is charged with poisoning British businessman Neil Heywood. Last Thursday, Gu, along with an accomplice, admitted killing Heywood back in November. And now the lawyer for the accomplice says a verdict may come out later this month, but it's not certain. On Sunday, a boat of Hong Kong citizens called the Action Committee for Defending the Diaoyu Islands set sail from Hong Kong. Their mission: to assert Chinese ownership over the Diaoyu Islands. But there's one problem. Japan also claims ownership of the islands, which they call the Senkaku Islands. The uninhabited islands are located 115 miles northeast of Taiwan. A dam in Daishan County, Zhejiang province, collapsed on Friday killing 11 villagers. The collapse came after Typhoon Haikui hit the region last Wednesday. Taiwanese businessman, Chung Ting-pang, was released from his detention in Mainland China on Saturday. He was first obtained on June 18th. Speaking to the press for the first time, Chung described his 54-day ordeal as "abduction." Torrential rains from typhoon Haikui battered Wuyuan County, in China's Jiangxi Province on Friday, causing massive damage to farms and infrastructure. euronews the network - China rising: Will new leadership bring about change?
www.euronews.com As China's Communist Party Congress approaches and with it an expected change of leadership, China-watchers are considering what policies may stand to change. Tensions have risen over trade with the EU, namely over solar panels European producers say Chinese competitors are dumping on the market. China's trade surplus, thanks to the government's control over the value of the currency, has long been a source of friction. China's disputes with neighbours over islands in the region have flamed up again, this time with Japan, raising concerns. Concerns as well over human rights won't go away. Beijing has maintained a hard line toward its dissidents. Questions have risen over the health of presumed new leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping, seen as a pro-reformer aiming to jumpstart a lagging economy on which the world depends to pull out of an economic slump. What should be Europe's relations with China? How much can China be swayed, if at all, on its currency, trade and human rights? Or is Europe powerless in the face of an ever-rising China? Wired into this edition of The Network is, from Berlin, Helmut Scholz, a European Parliament member of the German leftist party Die Linke. He's on the parliament's International Trade Committee. He's been critical of China flooding Europe with cheap goods. "We can't simply say business as usual" with China and other emerging economies, he says. If you have cooperation it has to be in a fair world economy. From here at the ...

China News - August 14, 2012: Fugitive Serial Killer Shot in Chongqing
In today's China news, Beijing officials are hosting an envoy of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, after Westerns powers condemned Beijing for blocking efforts to end to the Syrian conflict. A gruesome but welcome image has been in the media today of the death of Zhou Kehua. Zhou was responsible for the deaths of nine people since 2004 and the injury of five others. His crimes span all across China, many of which were armed robberies involving innocent people. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's uncle, Jang Song-thaek, is in China to discuss setting up joint commercial projects, according to North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency. Radio Free Asia reports that a Tibetan protester was beaten to death by Chinese police in far west China on Monday. The clash between police and Tibetan protesters broke out after two Tibetans set themselves on fire to protest against Chinese Communist rule. China's economy officially grew at 7.6% in the second quarter and is projected to grow at around 8% for the rest of the year. These figures have been questioned by analysts as being unreliable, one of those analysts - Gordon Chang, says other, more reliable, indicators show a much worse state for the Chinese economy.
