Skeptic's Science Symposium Q&A;
In June 2011, five leading skeptics (Bill Nye, James Randi, Donald Prothero, Brian Dalton, and Michael Shermer) met at Caltech during the Skeptics Society's Science Symposium to discuss their experiences communicating science to the public. Young audience members took advantage of these experts to ask excellent questions. This video includes one of the hottest topics in the skeptical community today: What is the most effective approach for educating the public and promoting skepticism, science, and critical thinking skills—confrontation, or a more gentle and respectful approach? There are several DVDs from the Science Symposium that you can order from Shop Skeptic: www.skeptic.com

Computer Science Teachers Association Computer Science & Information Technology Symposium 2010 July 13, 2010 Computer Science, Game Development and the XNA Game Studio Platform Presented by Alfred Thompson & Steve Scanlan This presentation talks about creating and implementing a high school game development curriculum using the (free) XNA Game Studio. We present the reasoning behind this type of course, show screenshots and a video introduction to student projects, as well as show examples of the sort of code students can create. We also talk about how freely available curriculum has been used and modified with real students. We present a collection of helpful resources including websites, tutorials and videos from Microsoft and independent web sites. For more information, please see csta.acm.org

Memristor and Memristive Systems Symposium (Part 1)
In 1971, Leon O. Chua published a seminal paper on the missing basic circuit element. Leon O. Chua and Sung-Mo Kang published a paper, in 1976, that described a large class of devices and systems they called memristive devices and systems. Just recently, Stan Williams and his research team at HP Labs unveiled a two-terminal titanium dioxide nanoscale device in Nature magazine that exhibited memristor characteristics. This symposium will explore the potential of memristors and memristive systems as they advance state of the art nano-electronic circuits. Program (Part 1) Opening Remarks Steve Kang, Chancellor, UC Merced Pinaki Mazumder, Program Director, National Science Foundation Stuart Russell, Chair of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department, College of Engineering, UC Berkeley Memristors Leon Chua, Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department, College of Engineering, UC Berkeley Finding the Missing Memristor Stan Williams, HP Senior Fellow and Director of Information & Quantum Systems Lab, Hewlett-Packard Material Implication Using Memristors: An Alternate Form of Boolean Logic Philip Kuekes, Computer Architect, Information and Quantum Systems Laboratory, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories The event is co-sponsored by UC Merced and UC Berkeley in cooperation with the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The Symposium is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Inside what went on in the Symposium. My website: www.CorPeYo.com • Scholars benefit from a scholarship, a summer internship at one of the ten NASA Field Centers, a mentorship program, tutoring support, and the MUST Orientation and Leadership Symposium. • And now I will share with you my experience on the 2011 NASA MUST Orientation and Leadership Symposium held in Baltimore Maryland. • Highly motivating speakers taught us the "seven survival skills" necessary for success, which are: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration Across Networks and Leading By Influence, Agility and Adaptability, Initiative and Entrepreneurship, Effective Oral and Written Communication, Accessing and Analyzing Information, and Curiosity and Imagination. • We also got attended a Resume Workshop, received orientation by a NASA MUST alumni on the graduate school application process, learned about business etiquette and took part in an Etiquette Dinner presented by Michele Pollard Patrick, founder of National Protocol. • Among the many speakers, there was Dr. Joachim de Posada, author of "Don't Eat the Marshmallow Yet", award winning lecturer Dr. Bertice Berry, Dr. Carlos Santiago, Chief Executive Officer of Hispanic College Fund, Tony Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don't Teach the New Survival Skills Our Children Need—And What We Can do About It, Dr. Freeman Hrbowski, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Dr. John Hodge ...

Music and the Brain: Depression and Creativity Symposium
Kay Redfield Jamison, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, convened a discussion of the effects of depression on creativity. Joining Jamison were two distinguished colleagues from the fields of neurology and neuropsychiatry, Dr. Terence Ketter and Dr. Peter Whybrow. The Music and the Brain series is co-sponsored by the Library's Music Division and Science, Technology and Business Division, in cooperation with the Dana Foundation. The "Depression and Creativity" symposium marks the bicentennial of the birth of German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), who died after a severe depression following the death of his sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, also a gifted composer. One of the nation's most influential writers on creativity and the mind, Kay Redfield Jamison is a noted authority on bipolar disorder. She is the co-author of the standard medical text on manic-depressive illness and author of "Touched with Fire," "An Unquiet Mind," "Night Falls Fast" and "Exuberance: The Vital Emotion." Dr. Terence Ketter is known for extensive clinical work with exceptionally creative individuals and a strong interest in the relationship of creativity and madness. He is professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and chief of the Bipolar Disorders Clinic at Stanford University School of Medicine.
