Protecting Pacific Marine Monuments with Sylvia Earle
Exploring America's Marine National Monuments with MCBI and Sylvia Earle Beginning in 2006, Marine Conservation Biology Institute helped establish the Papahanaumokuakea, the first Marine National Monument in US waters. In 2009 their continued efforts resulted in the Pacific Remote Island Marine National Monuments (including Palmyra Atoll, Kingman Reef, Howland, Baker, Wake and Jarvis Islands and Johnston Atoll) and the Rose Atoll National Marine Monument. Join Dr. Sylvia Earle, and Dr Lance Morgan of MCBI in a tour of our new marine monuments. Together with the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument, these three monuments encompass 355000 sq. miles of islands and surrounding waters, protecting fish, coral reefs and other significant wildlife from threats ranging from over fishing to climate change. mcbi.org

Science Bulletins: Coral Reefs: Seeking in the Pristine
An international group of scientists led by the Scripps Institution of Oceangraphy has released major findings from an ongoing expedition to the Line Islands in the Pacific Ocean. At Kingman Reef, which is virtually unimpacted by humans, biologists saw an abundance of healthy coral. They also counted more fish at Kingman and proportionally more predators (such as sharks) than at any other coral reef in the world.

Nancy Knowlton (Smithsonian) Part 1: Coral Reefs: Past, Present and Future
www.ibioseminars.org Dr. Knowlton begins her talk by explaining what coral are and how they build reefs. Using many spectacular photographs, Knowlton illustrates the decline of most of the world's coral reefs over the past 30-40 years. She describes the effects of direct destruction such as dynamite fishing, as well as the more indirect, but equally catastrophic, effects of invasive species, excessive nutrients due to terrestrial run off, and ocean warming. She ends on a more hopeful note, showing how stringent conservation efforts in some places have resulted in healthier, more resilient reefs. In Part 2, Knowlton talks about the phenomenal biodiversity found in coral communities and why this diversity is important to reef health. She explains how difficult it is to classify corals and the many organisms with which they co-exist, and how modern genetic methods are proving much of the traditional taxonomy to be wrong. The Census of Marine Life project, of which Knowlton is a partner, is striving to find standardized and easily automated methods to take a global census of the biodiversity of coral reefs and results so far suggest the diversity is truly enormous.
