www.euronews.com Tens of thousand of people have taken to the streets throughout Spain to join a general strike that is stretching across Europe. It is coordinated action as part of a "European Day of Action and Solidarity" against austerity measures which many demonstrators say have made economic matters worse. The crisis has pushed millions into poverty and widespread anger didn't take long before erupting into violence. In Madrid, police trying to keep roads and parts of the city open, arrested more than 70 people after scuffles at picket lines. Although Spain's government has just passed a further round of stringent belt-tightening measures, unions say ordinary people are being made to suffer excessively. "They're taking all our rights away. The banks and other businesses are bringing us onto the streets, they're stealing our salaries. We don't have any rights anymore." The industrial action has caused chaos for travellers across Spain. Madrid's main train station was brought to a standstill as protestors prevented passengers from entering platforms. Tensions have also risen since last when when a woman jumped from her apartment to her death as baliffs tried to evict her after her bank foreclosed. The government is now reviewing eviction laws. CNN's Athena Jones reports on Defense Secretary Panetta's visit to Asia and the US military strategy in the region. Leon Panetta visited a former US Navy base in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam, on Sunday, marking the first trip to the base by an American defense secretary since the war ended. The Cam Ranh Bay naval base was an important deep water port and logistics hub for the US, and is considered a "jewel" of deep-water ports. Standing on the USNS Richard E. Byrd, a ship anchored at the base, Panetta thanked assembled civilian and military personnel for "your service, your sacrifice." "The Vietnam generation is my generation," Panetta said, noting there was "a tremendous amount of blood spilled on both sides" during the war. He called on those present to "heal the wounds of the past," saying it makes the sacrifices of those who died worthwhile and will help build a better future. Panetta, who headed to Hanoi after the base stop, is on a tour of Asia that includes Singapore and India. His trip aims to boost military ties in the region. "We still face a lot of threats ... still face a lot of challenges in today's world, and a lot of it is in this part of the world," Panetta said. In Singapore, he said, he outlined a new defense strategy. As part of a "rebalancing" with Asia, the United States will enhance its military cooperation with China and boost its allies' capabilities in the region, Panetta said Saturday. The defense secretary detailed the new strategy to a gathering of ...

Multiple Israeli air strikes continue to pound Gaza as more casualties are reported, following an attack that killed the Hamas military chief. By pounding targets across Gaza with 20 air strikes in the space of a few hours, Benjamin Netanyahu kept his grim pledge to exact the "highest price" for rockets fired at southern Israel. The prime minister clearly decided that the 120 missiles launched from Gaza since Saturday could not be allowed to go unanswered, particularly as he faces an election on January 22. But the Israeli political timetable does not provide the sole explanation for the timing of this assault. Over the last few weeks, the flow of rockets has escalated and, most importantly, Hamas appears to have changed its strategy. The radical Islamist movement, which seized control of Gaza in 2007, has often adopted a position of calculated ambiguity towards rocket attacks, many of which have been launched by other armed groups. Whether or not Hamas approved has often been left open; on occasion, its operatives have chosen to deny culpability. In the last few weeks, however, Hamas officials have openly claimed responsibility for launching rockets, describing them as retaliation for earlier Israeli air strikes. Israel has killed the military commander of the Palestinian Hamas movement in a missile strike on the Gaza Strip and launched air raids across the enclave, pushing the two sides to the brink of a new war. The attacks on Wednesday marked the biggest escalation between Israel and Gaza fighters since the 2008-2009 conflict and came despite signs on Tuesday that neighbouring Egypt had managed to broker a truce in the territory after a five-day surge of violence.
