ll4.me Holy Writ As Oral Lit: The Bible As Folklore - Alan Dundes With great reverence for the Bible, Dundes offers a new and exciting way to resolve some of the mysteries and contradictions that evolved during the Bible's pre-written legacy and that still persist today. Using his expert knowledge of folklore, Dundes unearths and contrasts multiple versions of nearly every major biblical event, including the creation of woman, the flood, the ten commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord's Prayer, and the inscription on the Cross.Author: Dundes, Alan Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Illustration: N Language: ENG Title: Holy Writ as Oral Lit: The Bible as Folklore Pages: 00176 (Encrypted PDF) On Sale: 2000-01-01 SKU-13/ISBN: 9780847691975 Category: Religion : Biblical Criticism & Interpretation - General Category: Religion : Reference Category: Social Science : Anthropology - General With great reverence for the Bible, Dundes offers a new and exciting way to resolve some of the mysteries and contradictions that evolved during the Bible's pre-written legacy and that still persist t alan dundes, biblical criticism, general, interpretation, reference, religion

780. Little Sir Hugh (Child 155) - (Traditional)
This ballad is also known as "The Jew's Daughter" or, especially in its American version, "The Fatal Flower Garden". It is one of the oldest of the English and Scottish ballads collected by Francis James Child. There is some controversy about whether this song should be sung at all, given that it began as part of the blood-libel against the Jews. When it moved to America, the villainess became a gypsy rather than a Jew, though there is no history of allegations of child-stealing against the gypsies. These days, both Jews and Gypsies are usually left out, but the ritualistic killing still points to its racist origins. It is interesting to note that the same accusations were made by the Romans against he Christians. Folklorist Alan Dundes collected 14 essays and edited a book on this legend: The Blood Libel Legend: A Casebook in Anti-Semitic Folklore (University of Wisconsin Press, 1991). From the notes on the back cover: "The legend is traced from the murder of William of Norwich in 1144, one of the first reported cases of ritualized murder attributed to Jews, through nineteenth-century Egyptian reports, Spanish examples, Catholic periodicals, modern English instances, and twentieth-century American cases. The essays deal not only with historical cases and surveys of blood libel in different locales, but also with literary renditions of the legend, including the ballad 'Sir Hugh, or, the Jew's Daughter' and Chaucer's 'The Prioress's Tale.'" There is an excellent article ...

Bess Lomax Hawes 2004 Folk Alliance International Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Bess Lomax Hawes (1921-2009) led the establishment of public folklore programs throughout the United States. She did it with a vast knowledge of America's diverse traditions, the discipline of a savvy strategist, an empathy born of experience for cultural work, and a personal reservoir of good grace. Bess was born in 1921 in Austin, Texas, the youngest child of pioneering American folklorist John A. Lomax. Bess joined her father and brother Alan as a researcher at the Library of Congress, where they directed the Archive of American Folk Song. After graduating from Bryn Mawr College, she worked as a research assistant in the New York Public Library for the Columbia School of the Air (CBS). From 1941 to 1952, she was a singer and instrumentalist with the Almanac Singers, a topical song group that would help pave the way for the Folk Revival. With the Almanac Singers, which included Pete Seeger and her future husband Butch Hawes, she recorded the albums Talking Union and Citizen CIO. She also sang on the Folkways Records albums Woody Guthrie Sings Folk Songs and Spanish Civil War. As a parodist and songwriter, she co-authored the song later made famous by the Kingston Trio, "Charlie on the MTA." During the war years, Bess was an information specialist for the Radio Program Bureau of the Office of War Information. Moving to the West Coast, she and her husband Butch raised three children, and in 1970 Bess received one of the first MA degrees in folklore from the University of ...

Sports as VIOLENT and Homoerotic Rituals
In this video, Irma Vargas Rosas draws on the work by Alan Dundes (1978) to evaluate football as a erotic ritual. Dundes concludes that football is a homoerotic ritual. Vargas Rosas adds other popular sports such as soccer, basketball, and wrestling to the analysis. Using images gathered from the Internet of football, soccer, and basketball players, and wrestlers, she finds there is a lot of VIOLENCE in these sports. There is also touching between players and she questions, as did Dundes, whether players are really gay and pretend to be straight. Then we have all the MEN who watch these MEN "get it on" as if they were watching a gay porn movie. Yet these many of these men are responsible for denying gay men and lesbians, our civil rights. She asks for your cooperation to answer a few questions at www.surveymonkey.com
