Day 1: Templecombe, Castle Cary, Yeovil Junction, Yeovil Pen Mill & Exeter St Thomas
Day 1 of a 5 day trip to the South West and then on Day 4 to South Wales. We start at Templecombe, on the South West Main Line from London to Exeter, where we see a Class 159003 depart for Waterloo. We then head to Castle Cary where we before we see the 12.51 Great Malvern to Weymouth (150278 - this unit being one of four Class 150/2 units loaned to First Great Western from Arriva Trains Wales) and we see the 15.08 Weymouth to Gloucester arrive, formed of 150243. A short while later we see the 1506 London Paddington to Penzance (43174+43015) making its scheduled stop. A short while later and the 1500 Plymouth to London Paddington passes through. Next, we move to Yeovil Junction, where the 1520 London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids, formed of 159013 and another Class 159 departs. We then visit Yeovil Pen Mill, an interesting station where the Castle Cary platform has platform faces on both sides, and we see the 1730 Weymouth to Bristol Temple Meads call (formed of 150278, which we saw at Castle Cary earlier) and the 1451 Great Malvern to Weymouth arriving and departing formed of 158769. Finally we call into Exeter St Thomas, where after the passing of the 1803 London Paddington to Penzance HST, we see the 1932 Paignton to Exmouth makes its station call (153377 + Class 142) before the 1733 London Paddington to Paignton (43017+43005) also calls.

Crane Engine near Castle Cary. 01/06/08
On our way to chase 6233 and 60019 on the Locomotive Exchange run, we caught this beautiful 'Crane' Engine climbing a steep hill just after Castle Cary. We reckon it was on its way back south after attending the Bath & West show, which June 1st was the last day of it. Being in a rush to catch it, all the shots were handheld, adn we had intended to follow it for a while longer, but it stopped at the top of the hill for water, and we couldn't stay for very long. Probably just as well as we got lost trying to find Buckhorn Weston later that morning (See later vid).

37670 and 37401 Depart Castle Cary
37670 and 37401 are seen departing Castle Cary with 2V67, the 1655 Weymouth-Bristol Temple Meads service on the 5th September 2009. This was the last loco hauled service this year, and supposedly the last ever so FGW put on a pair of Class 37s instead of a pair of Class 67s.

Trains at Westbury & D1015 at Castle Cary
Wednesday October 14th, D1015 was booked to work from Quidhampton to Tavistock Jn with some China Clay tanks. I decided to take a trip to Westbury for some general spotting, then onto Castle Cary to catch the beast in action. Unfortunately not everything went according to plan. Something happened somewhere between Thingley Jn and Bristol, forcing some HST servces to be diverted via Melksham and Westbury, for onward working to Taunton. This caused D1015 to be late by about 19 minutes at Castle Cary. Also, something on D1015 'popped' and the brakes were applied pronto! Don't know exactly what happened, but the engines went off, and she came to an abrupt halt at the road bridge, just west of Castle Cary station. All in all however, a good few hours. Enjoy!

Castle Cary 5.4.09
A fantastic few hours on a stunning Sunday morning in a new location for me, Castle Cary. Linespeeds of 100, and a straight for miles, what more can you want?! Fortunately we had XC Diverts, so some Voyagers passed with some awesome 2tones and 43378+43304 are in action working to St Austell. FGW HSTs also thunder through this tranquil station, with several 2tones including a 'gorgeous' 2tone from 43152! A Freight also showed, 66584, AGAIN! With 6Y29 Tiverton Loop-Eastleigh Via Westbury, running bang on-time, nearly blowing me away with it's tremendous speed! Enjoy!

The Weymouth Seaside Express at Castle Cary Sun 7th August 2011
The Weymouth Seaside Express(1Z93) at Castle Cary Sun 7th August 2011. Nunney Castle runs into platform 2 at Castle Cary and slows to a stop at the west end to wait for an HST to pass through on it's way to Westbury and beyond. Once the HST has passed no 5029 starts the train onward towards Bristol, you can here the crisp exaust beat as she gets under way.

Railway Track Layer, Castle Cary, January 2012
This is one of Balfour Beatty's track laying machines at work near Castle Cary, it is re - laying about half a mile of track after the previous track was removed. New steel sleepers are being placed and continous rail affixed to create the new section of track. The process began on Friday night shortly after midnight with a track crew cutting the old line into panels about 40 feet long. Following this a crew with two railroad excavators removed each panel stacking them at the side of the track bed. A bulldozer and railroad excavator then proceeded to level and grade the exsisting ballast, the whole section was ripped by about 6 am, the new continuous rails were moved onto surveyed lines by a rail roader and the track layer followed. The new section was laid by 2 pm on Saturday, at about 4 pm the section was ballasted and then over the Saturday night into Sunday morning track hardware was reinstalled to allow the line to be operational for Sunday HST diversions from the Castle Cary to Taunton section of line
