Paul Maskey

Paul John Maskey (born 10 June 1967) is an Irish republican politician in Northern Ireland who is a member of Sinn Féin. He served as a Sinn Féin member (MLA) of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Belfast West from 2007 to 2012. He is currently Member of Parliament (MP) for the Westminster constituency of Belfast West, but in line with Sinn Féin's policy of abstentionism he has not taken his seat there.

Tourism

Maskey has been employed by Fáilte Feirste Thiar ('Welcome to West Belfast'), an agency promoting tourism into that part of the city. As development co-ordinator in 2004 he helped launch an initiative under which 120 local businesses agreed to accept the euro, in order to help encourage visitors from across the border and elsewhere in the Eurozone. In December 2005, as chair of the West Belfast Partnership, he linked up with Shankill Tourism to set up an Arts and Heritage trail which included both the Shankill Road and Falls Road areas. He welcomed publication of a tourist map of Belfast in 2006 which included a Gaeltacht Quarter in west Belfast, and in 2008 the group published a map and guide to all gable end murals in the west of Belfast. When he was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly, Maskey became unpaid chair of Fáilte Feirste Thiar.

Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin (/ʃɪn ˈfeɪn/ shin-FAYNIrish pronunciation: [ʃɪnʲ ˈfʲeːnʲ]) is an Irish republican political party active in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The name is Irish for "ourselves" or "we ourselves", although it is frequently mistranslated as "ourselves alone". Originating in the Sinn Féin organisation founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith, it took its current form in 1970 after a split within the party (the other party became the Workers' Party of Ireland), and has been historically associated with the IRA.Gerry Adams has been party president since 1983.

Sinn Féin is currently the second-largest party behind the Democratic Unionist Party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, where it has four ministerial posts in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive, and the fourth-largest party in the Oireachtas, the parliament of the Republic. Sinn Féin also received the second highest number of Northern Ireland votes and seats in the 2015 Westminster elections, behind the DUP.

Life sketch

Menachery Poulose Paul was born on 1 May 1904 at Puthenpally Varapuzha, Ernakulam to Poulose and Rosamma.

He was a teacher by profession and worked in St.Thomas College, Thrissur, S.B.College, Changanassery and Mar Ivanious College, Thiruvananthapuram. He also established tutorial centres, M. P. Paul's Tutorial College, at Thrissur, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram and famous Malayalam writer, Muttathu Varkey was a teahcer in one of these colleges.

Paul is credited with introducing a modern approach to literary criticism in Malayalam. He was said to be instrumental in democratising the renaissance movement in Malayalam literature and taking its benefits to the masses. Paul attempted to study aesthetics as fundamental to the practice of literary criticism.

M. P. Paul, along with a group of literary enthusiasts founded Sahitya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sangham, a cooperative society for helping the writers to publish their works as well as getting them a decent remuneration during a time when even renowned writers like Vaikom Muhammad Basheer struggled to get adequate remuneration. Paul was its first president. He published a weekly Navakeralam and a monthly Cherupushpam. He acted as the president of the Kerala Purogamana Saahitya Sanghatana for a brief period but distanced himself from the organization owing to differences of opinion.
