Pacific Northwest Art Program
Residents and businesses in the Portland metropolitan area generate about 2.6 million tons of waste each year - the majority of it is sent out of the region to a landfill 150 miles away. Five artists were chosen to help educate the public about excessive waste generation by creating art from discarded materials otherwise destined for the landfill. The exhibition is the public's first opportunity to see the results of seven months of gleaning and creative material adaptation. Please join us at this public exhibition to see how waste is creatively transformed into unique pieces of art. The Pacific Northwest Art Program (PNAP), a collaboration between Recology, Cracked Pots, Inc. and Metro, seeks to educate the public about recycling and resource conservation while supporting the local art community and diverting material from landfills.

The Sunday Life Line
Confronted by skyrocketing prices in inner North and Northeast Portland, many African Americans who grew up there have moved to the more affordable edges of the city. So churches are finding ways to bring them back for services. Every Sunday, Roberta Tyler and her two granddaughters traverses the metropolitan area in the Highland Christian Center van to pick up scattered congregants.
This story was produced by Aaron Scott in a partnership between Portland Monthly and OPB. To read Scott's story, “By the Grace of God,” about how Portland’s black churches are dealing with the displacement of their congregations, go to www.portlandmonthlymag.com/churches.

Portland's Urban Farmer Barriers and Opportunities
The Portland metropolitan area is well known nationwide for its cutting edge sustainability vision, urban development and farmland protection framework. The region has a large number of productive small farms within and near urban areas. There is a growing interest in, and support for, locally grown, sustainable food. This interest is driven by rising concerns over public health, food security, transportation costs, climate change, economic turmoil and the search for a more community-based, sustainable lifestyle. There is growing support for farmers markets, community supported agriculture (CSA), community gardens, local healthy school food programs and institutional purchases of fresh, locally grown produce. However, farming in and around the city has its unique challenges.
This Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant project identified key challenges that face our foodshed growers and producers and developed strategies for both planners and growers to overcome them. Small and new farmers around the Portland area have issues different from rural farmers such as difficulty finding land, accessing capital, competing neighboring land uses, confusing regulation and zoning laws, and coordinating with distributors and processors to get products to market. This project has attempted to help find solutions to address these unique challenges for both existing and emerging urban farmers.

Portland Thunderstorm 5/26/2012
A series of strong (but not severe) thunderstorms came rolling from north to south over the Portland metropolitan area. These were not forecasted - the forecast in the morning was for a 20% chance of showers. Obviously, this was modified. A few thunder rumbles, very heavy rain, and it was all over. I know you Kansas people will laugh, but we don't get this kind of weather often in Portland. It's a cell phone camera, so sorry for the quality. I stabilized it the best I could and chopped out some boring parts. I left in mister duck, though.
