Guernica / A Magazine of Art and Politics is a biweekly online site that publishes art and photography, fiction, and poetry, from around the world, along with nonfiction such as letters from abroad, investigative pieces and opinion pieces on international affairs and U.S. domestic policy. It also publishes interviews and profiles of artists, writers, musicians and political figures.

Guernica 's stated mission is to publish works that explore "the crossroads between art and politics". According to Publishers Weekly, Guernica was founded in 2004 by former MFA students Joel Whitney and Michael Archer and Fordham University graduate students Josh Jones and Elizabeth Onusko. Whitney and Archer met during a teaching program in Costa Rica. Jones and Onusko met in writing classes at Fordham University and served as co-managing editors of Guernica until 2006.

Guernica Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation organized under the laws of the state of Delaware, incorporated on March 20, 2009.

In 2011, Bridget Potter's essay "Lucky Girl" was chosen for The Best American Essays, 2011, guest-edited by Edwidge Danticat. Mark Dowie's "Food Among the Ruins" was chosen for the Best of the Net anthology. Jack Shenker's "Dam Dilemma" was part of a portfolio of his work longlisted for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing in the UK. In 2010, Oliver de la Paz's poem "Requiem for the Orchard", F. Daniel Rzicnek's poem "Geomancy" and Elizabeth Crane's short story "The Genius Meetings" won Best of the Web prizes (Dzanc Books). In 2009, E. C. Osondu was awarded the Caine Prize for African Writing for his Guernica short story, "Waiting". Esquire magazine cited Guernica for its fiction and called it a "great online literary magazine".^[1] Matthew Derby's short story "January in December" won a Best of the Web prize (Dzanc Books). Aleš Šteger's poem "Earring" (tr. Brian Henry) was selected for the Best of the Net Anthology (Sundress Publications). In 2008, Okey Ndibe's "My Biafran Eyes" won a Best of the Web prize (Dzanc Books). Rebecca Morgan Frank's "Rescue" was chosen for the Best New Poets award.

Guernica is a three-time PEN World Voices participant in 2008, 2009 and 2010. It has co-sponsored events with the Asian American Writers' Workshop, Amnesty International and various publishing companies.

Eliza Griswold (born February 9, 1973) is an award-winning American journalist and poet. She is a fellow at the New America Foundation and won a 2010 Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.^[1] She is a former Nieman Fellow, and has been published in The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, and the New York Times Magazine.

Life and work[link]

Eliza Griswold graduated from Princeton University in 1995^[2] and studied creative writing at Johns Hopkins University.^[3] She won the first Robert I. Friedman Prize in Investigative Journalism in 2004, for "In the Hiding Zone", about Pakistan's Waziristan Agency.^[4][5] She worked with Pakistani journalist Hayatullah Khan, who acted as her handler.^[6]

Griswold has written widely on the "war on terror".^[7]

Griswold published "Wideawake Field", a book of poetry, on May 17, 2007.^[8][9][10] A second book, The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam, is a travelogue about the regions of the world along the line of latitude where Christianity and Islam clash.^[11] In 2011 Griswold was awarded the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize for the The Tenth Parallel. ^[12]

In 2011 in the New York Times Magazine, she published an investigative report, The Fracturing of Pennsylvania, which investigated the environmentally-questionable practices of fracking companies such as Range Resources.

Eliza Griswold is the daughter of Frank Griswold, the 25th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. She married Christopher Allen on June 8, 1996.^[3]

Kamila Shamsie (born 1973) is a Pakistani American novelist who writes in the English language. She was brought up in Karachi and attended Karachi Grammar School.

She has a BA in Creative Writing from Hamilton College, and an MFA from the MFA Program for Poets & Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she was influenced by the Kashmiri poet Agha Shahid Ali. Shamsie wrote her first novel, In The City By The Sea, while still at UMass, and it was published in 1998. It was shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in the UK, and Shamsie received the Prime Minister's Award for Literature in Pakistan in 1999. Her second novel, Salt and Saffron, followed in 2000, after which she was selected as one of Orange's 21 Writers of the 21st century. Her third novel, Kartography, received widespread critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys award in the UK. Both Kartography and her next novel, Broken Verses, have won the Patras Bokhari Award from the Academy of Letters in Pakistan. Her fifth novel Burnt Shadows was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. Her books have been translated in a number of languages.

She is also a reviewer and columnist - primarily for The Guardian - and has been a judge for several literary awards, including the Orange Award for New Writers and the Guardian First Book Award.

She is the daughter of the famous literary journalist, compiler and editor Muneeza Shamsie, niece of Attia Hosain and granddaughter of the writer Begum Jahanara Habibullah. Her sister Saman Shamsie used to be a college counselor and taught O-level Physics and SAT writing and reading at Karachi Grammar School.

In 2009, Kamila Shamsie donated the short story "The Desert Torso" to Oxfam's Ox-Tales project - four collections of UK stories written by 38 authors. Her story was published in the Air collection.^[1]

She participated in the Bush Theatre's 2011 project Sixty Six, with a piece based on a chapter of the King James Bible^[2]
