Pikinini (Mongol Point) Extremely fast, heavy barrelling, very shallow right-hand coral reef break. Given the right conditions and swell direction, waves can peel for up to 200m. Reef boots are a good idea. recorded (begininng March) whilst laying in my hammock... ♥ New Ireland Papua New Guinea

Road Trip ~ Kavieng to Namatanai Feb 2011
Road Trip ~ Kavieng to Namatanai Feb 2011
The Boluminski Highway is the main land transportation route on the island of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. It runs from the provincial capital of Kavieng for 193 km down the east coast of the island to Namatanai. From Kavieng it is a sealed road for around 120 km until Bol village, and from there it has a crushed white coral road surface. Originally named Kaiser-Wilhelm-Chaussee during the German protectorate, it was renamed in 1921 into East Coast Road. After Papua New Guinea gained independence (1975) the Highway was renamed again, this time after Franz Boluminski who was the German District Officer from 1910 until the First World War. He built a large section of the highway by forcing individual villages along the coast to construct and maintain a section. If a section of the road fell into disrepair the village responsible would be punished by having to carry his sulky with him in it over the substandard section, and then his horse was reharnessed and he continued. The quality of the highway was not rivalled on the mainland until the 1950s.

The Fall of Rabaul & Kavieng - Documentary
Buy the DVD from www.thefallofrabaul.com This 2 disc set features no less than 4 hours of riveting material including extensive coverage of the events at Parliament House Canberra on the 21st of June 2010. Includes all the speeches in the House of Representatives and Senate plus interviews at Parliament House gauging the reactions of relatives and veterans attending this historic occasion. There are "no punches pulled" when it comes to criticism by some interviewees of those whose bungling decisions resulted in tragic, significant and unnecessary loss of Australian lives. The second 2 hour disc features detailed interviews with those who survived the 1942 invasion of Rabaul and Kavieng combined with rare archival film and stills. Extensive unseen interviews and the coverage of multiple events makes The Fall of Rabaul and Kavieng unbeatable value for money and a "must have" for anyone interested in the events in Rabaul and Kavieng in 1942.

Kavieng is renowned for it's current-swept channels that attract a variety of big Pelagic fish. Eagle rays, Mantas, Tuna, Barracudas and reef sharks can be seen. Miles of reef walls that drop away to great depths, are covered in big fans, sponges and beautiful hard corals that provide the perfect hiding place for small critters like nudibranchs and the Pygmy Seahorse. WWII wrecks include an American B-25 Bomber shot down in 1944. Recent exploration has uncovered a Japanese plane wreck, 2 ship wrecks and a barge carrying WWII equipment. The wreck of a Korean fishing vessel lies on it's starboard side on a large ridge. This area is a magnet for Barracudas and Jacks. Water temperatures are around 29 degrees C with visibility between thirty and forty metres. Whatever your diving interest, Kavieng will satisfy your taste.
