Dramatic video of Clelia II Antarctic cruise ship slammed by giant waves
A US-operated Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people aboard has lost an engine in high seas, but is limping safely to its scheduled port. The Argentine Navy said the Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had lost an engine amid heavy seas and 55 miles per hour (90 km per hour) winds. The ship, operated by Polar Cruises of Bend, Oregon, has 100 passengers and 60 crew members aboard. Courtesy: jonbowermaster.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Byrd's First Antarctic Expedition 1928
Byrd Antarctic Expedition 1928. Richard E. Byrd "In 1928, Admiral Byrd began his first expedition to the Antarctic involving two ships, and three airplanes: Byrd's Flagship was The City of New York; a Ford Trimotor called the Floyd Bennett (named after the recently deceased pilot of Byrd's previous expeditions); a Fairchild FC-2W2, NX8006, built 1928, named "Stars And Stripes" (now displayed at the Virginia Aviation Museum, on loan from the National Air and Space Museum); and a Fokker Universal monoplane called the Virginia (Byrd's birth state). A base camp named "Little America" was constructed on the Ross Ice Shelf and scientific expeditions by snowshoe, dog-sled, snowmobile, and airplane began. Photographic expeditions and geological surveys were undertaken for the duration of that summer, and constant radio communications were maintained with the outside world. After their first winter, their expeditions were resumed, and on 28 November 1929, the famous flight to the South Pole and back was launched. Byrd, along with pilot Bernt Balchen, co-pilot/radioman Harold June, and photographer Ashley McKinley, flew the Ford Trimotor to the South Pole and back in 18 hours, 41 minutes. They had difficulty gaining enough altitude, and they had to dump empty gas tanks, as well as their emergency supplies, in order to achieve the altitude of the Polar Plateau. However, the flight was successful, and it entered Byrd into the history books. After a further summer of exploration, the ...

Antarctic: Grand Canyon-sized rift 'speeding ice melt'
A rift in the Antarctic rock as deep as the Grand Canyon is increasing ice melt from the continent, researchers say. A UK team found the Ferrigno rift using ice-penetrating radar, and showed it to be about 1.5km (1 mile) deep. Antarctica is home to a geological rift system where new crust is being formed, meaning the eastern and western halves of the continent are slowly separating. The team writes in Nature journal that the canyon is bringing more warm sea water to the ice sheet, hastening melt. The Ferrigno rift lies close to the Pine Island Glacier where Nasa scientists found a giant crack last year; but the newly discovered feature is not thought to be influencing the "Pig", as it is known. The rift lies beneath the Ferrigno Ice Stream on a stretch of coast so remote that it has only been visited once previously. Continue reading the main story " Start Quote The geology and the present rate of ice loss are intricately linked" Prof David Vaughan BAS The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) project revisited the area two years ago in the person of Aberdeen University glaciologist Robert Bingham. The plan was to make ground observations that could link to the satellite data showing unexpectedly pronounced ice loss from the area. The team towed ice-penetrating radar kit behind a snowmobile, traversing a total of about 2500km (1500 miles). "What we found is that lying beneath the ice there is a large valley, parts of which are approximately a mile deeper than the surrounding ...

ANTARCTICA! The 1939-41 Admiral Byrd's 3rd Antarctic Mission (1 of 6)
www.romanoarchives.tk Antarctica (1941) Part 1 of 6 Officially the Adm. Byrd's mission was a geographical, biological and metereological one. In facts the US Intelligence was really concerned about the Nazi research of the secret Antarctic Doors, according to the "Hollow Earth" theory. There were also rumours about a Nazi "Secret Disk-Shaped Planes Factory and Military Air Base" in the area. The possibility of the passage of unknown weapons and Axis' troops through the Earth, able to hit the USA by surprise from the underground, was taken in serious consideration by the American Intelligence at the end of the 1930ies. To control the Germans in their activities in "Neu-Schwabenland" was considered a priority in the early times of WW2, at least before Pearl Harbor's attack and the US involvement in the conflict. In this recently declassified original silent footage there's much more that meets the eye than the trip to Antarctic and the daily life of the crew. There are really revealing and unexpected shots here and there... All Aboard, Anchors Aweigh, Aim - Antarctic!
Before the summer heat retreats, the Tech Up teams enjoys a little fun in the sun aboard the latest ships sailing the Russian waterways. But it's not just maxing and relaxing. There is serious scientific work to be done as a major research vessel prepares to set sail for the Antarctic. The Akademik Tryoshnikov gets fitted with the most high-tech navigation and experimental equipment from industry leaders like Transas. And a new floating abode will allow vacationers to take a break from city life atop the docile waves of Russia's rivers. The Coldest March: Scott's Fatal Antarctic Expedition
Capt. Robert Falcon Scott's tragic 1911-12 South Pole expedition has long been an Antarctic legend, viewed by some as a saga of heroism and by others as a cautionary tale of human folly. Distinguished polar scientist Susan Solomon, an authority on Antarctic science, presented extraordinary evidence that unusually cold weather-not failures of leadership-doomed Scott and his men. Drawing on her published book, The Coldest March, as well as recent research, Solomon debunked other myths about the expedition, and offered new insights into the lives and deaths of Scott and his heroic companions. bit.ly See more events from the Chemistry Centre, London
