Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Dracula’s story was retold as some sort of superhero/biopic hybrid about a totally fictionalized version of Vlad the Impaler that uses no real facts other than his name? Wonder no longer folks as Dracula Untold is set to arrive like a bat out of hell. In a retelling of Bram Stoker’s famous tome that is more inspiration than basis, Dracula Untold attempts to re-establish the classic Universal monster in to some sort of superhero, though that’s left a little unclear, much like the rest of the film…We’re first introduced to Vlad the Impaler - a super solider raised to kill when the Transylvanian was drafted into the Turkish army as a child to help fight their campaigns to conquer the world. After years of service, Vlad is able to go home to his father’s castle of Dracul to reign over his people in peace. There we find out Vlad isn’t such a bad guy despite having spent his entire life at war. In fact, he’s a loving father and husband – who just so happens to have earned the name Vlad the Impaler. But that’s his past y’all. He’s not that way anymore…UNTIL…the Turks return! They want Vlad to provide 1000 of his people’s children to serve in the Turkish army, including Vlad’s only son. No way, Jose…or in this case, no way, Dominic Cooper…aka the English actor playing a Turkish sultan. Vlad isn’t having any of that. He decides to go to a legendary cave in Transylvania – one that he’s apparently never heard of until a monk tells him about it…He’s told there’s a vampire that lives there, maybe he can help Vlad defeat the Turks. Yep. Vlad isn’t the first vampire. Instead of, you know, having the devil live in the cave and having Vlad come to terms with his demons and becoming the tortured hero, we get some weird story about an old dude that had made a deal with the devil years ago and he just wants someone else to take over. Vlad drinks his blood and then finds there’s a fancy return policy. He can be Dracula for three days with all the powers and bells and whistles, defeat the Turks, and then go back to being human just as long as he resists drinking human blood. Why exactly, isn’t made clear. Nor are the rules of his vampiric abilities which include, we think, being super strong, having heat tracking vision, turning into and controlling massive swarms of bats, having pointy teeth, becoming super emotional and yelling a lot, and sort of being hurt by sunlight but they give off the vibe that he could walk outside with a big umbrella hat and be okay. Also instead of immediately using this sudden increase in power and being an all around vicious badass – Vlad decides to spend the first two days hanging out with his family and citizens, wasting time and not defeating the Turks immediately, because, you know, that would be using logic. Who cares about plots and story mechanics, right? The filmmakers certainly don’t and they figure neither should you. At the end of the day, this was a very light, if anything, amusing, action flick. If you’re looking for a fun bite of action adventure with no logic but cool set design, visuals, and action sequences, go for it. It’s an hour and half of pure “wow, they really did that,” fun. It’s like seeing The Expendables or The Core or Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. With this setting the stage for Universal to launch an interconnected world featuring some of their most famous movie monsters, this is surely not the last we’ve heard of Dracula and if Untold is setting the tone, films featuring The Mummy and Frankenstein should be extremely entertaining. But wrapping up our review of Dracula Untold, if you and your friends are feeling like a breezy popcorn movie, Dracula Untold is a surprisingly light darkness that’s worth a watch.
