This year area school children will begin decorating trees supplied by the Optimists at approximately 3:30 PM, Friday, November 30, 2012. Santa is expected at 4:15 PM, followed by entertainment consisting of the Salvation Army Band, Artistry in Motion, the Des Plaines Park District’s Dance Troupe, the Maine West High School Choraliers, directed by Ben Avci, and the Maine West High School Warrior Band, conducted by Bernie Gerstmayr. Des Plaines Park District Marketing Manager Gene Haring will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Refreshments and goodies, including chestnuts roasted by the History Center, will be served. At approximately 6 PM, Mayor Martin J. Moylan, accompanied by other local officials, will lead the public in a countdown that culminates on the main stage with the flipping of a giant switch turning on the lights in the downtown. After the event the public is invited to the Des Plaines Theatre, 1476 Miner Street, to view a holiday movie or visit the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Street, where holiday cards, decorated by students from School District 62, will be on display.
