Paul Jacobs - Graceful Ghost Rag (William Bolcom).mov
William Bolcom's Graceful Ghost Rag is the first in a set of three Ghost Rags and is dedicated to the composer's father. The introduction resembles the left hand figure of the classic Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin. Listen to Joplin play Maple Leaf Rag: www.youtube.com In contrast to the feel of a steady and syncopated military march is this Jelly Roll Morton performance: www.youtube.com Unlike Joplin and Bolcom, Morton calls his version Maple Leaf Stomp, not a Rag--there is a great difference.

"George" by William Bolcom
"George" by William Bolcom
Christy Kotsonaros sings a song about an alcoholic drag queen! ha ha (Unfortunately the video clips off the very end!) The audience keeps laughing so if you can tell what the lyrics/story are, here they are: My friend George Used to say "Oh, call me Georgia, hon, Get yourselves a drink." And sang the best soprano In our part of town In beads, brocade and pins He sang if you happened in Through the door he never locked And said, "Get yourselves a drink." And sang out loud Till tears fell in the cognac And in the chocolate milk and gin And on the beads, brocade and pins When strangers happened through his open door George said, "Stay, but you gotta keep quiet While I sing, and then a minute after, And call me Georgia." One fine day a stranger In a suit of navy blue Took George's life With a knife George had placed beside an apple pie he'd baked And stabbed him in the middle Of Un bel di vedremo Which he sang for this particular stranger Who was in the United States Navy. The funeral was at the cocktail hour We knew George would like it that way Tears fell on the beads, brocade and pins In the coffin Which was white Because George was a virgin Oh, call him Georgia, hon Get yourself a drink You can call me Georgia, hon Get yourself a drink!

William Bolcom's Serpent's Kiss from Garden of Eden
William Bolcom's Serpent's Kiss from Garden of Eden
Junior Recital, Indiana University ---------------- The Garden of Eden is a suite of four rags for the Piano (1 Old Adam, 2 The Eternal Feminine, 3 Serpents Kiss, 4 Through Edens Gates) that tells the story of the Fall through ragtime. The Serpents Kiss depicts the snakes various attempts of enticing Eve to eat the apple. From an excited chattering to calm wooing or from a hot-tempered rage to tap dancing, the snake tries everything in his bag of tricks. Evil has never quite been as entertaining and witty as underneath Bolcoms compositional pen.

Translations and Program Notes Senior Recital Converse College-Daniel Recital Hall September 10, 2010 7:30 PM Gwen Stembridge, Soprano Mildred Roche, Piano I am so thankful for your presence! I selected the pieces you will hear tonight with very particular purposes and in a unique way. I chose 90% of this music simply from reading the translated texts and being inspired through their words; some with laughter, some with tears, and some with smiles of contentment. These texts were chosen with purpose and because I must sing them in their original language, I don't want you to miss any of the rich messages that are available to us through music. A note about singing in foreign languages: I think one of the things that separate a lot of people from the classical vocal music world is language. Music is a universal language, yes, but French is not. : ) I worry that vocal music in foreign languages loses many valuable audience members (particularly the younger generation) because of the language barrier. So, if you're here early, I encourage you to glance through the translations for the first half of the recital so that you are equipped to absorb the fullness of this beautifully-composed music. Another purposeful aspect of this recital is the placement of pieces in sets, each representing a different aspect of topics I consider sacred. Humanity holds many things in this world sacred and it is usually because we cannot fully explain them. We attempt to explain and even recreate ...
