Reger (2) on Europe's Largest Pipe Organ: Passau Cathedral
Max Reger's Introduction & Passacaglia in D minor. Passau now calls its instrument (which is actually 5 separate instruments playable from a central console) the "largest organ outside the US" That works. Edgar Krapp made this recording in April of 1983. Martin Doering of Die Orgelseite (which I highly recommend to organ-lovers) provided most of the pictures.

Max Reger - Fantasie und Fuge über BACH, Op. 46
Fantasie und Fuge über BACH, Op. 46 (1900) A composition for organ by German composer Max Reger (1873-1916). This highly contrapuntal and extremely technically demanding work is built around the iconic motif BACH (German nomenclature for B flat - A - C - B natural), in homage to Reger's musical hero Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Reger on Europe's Largest Pipe Organ: Passau Cathedral
BIG GERMANIC MUSIC on a BIG GERMANIC INSTRUMENT. The folks in Passau & at 1st Congregational Church in LA tussled for many years over which place had the "World's Largest Church Organ" -- a somewhat interesting designation since the 2 largest instruments in the world are in a department store & a stadium-sized auditorium. The LA church finally won, but it could be temporary, since they're always adding pipes at both places in this never-ending struggle. In the mean time, Passau now stakes claim to being "The largest organ outside the US" In any event, it's a monster. It's actually 5 instruments situated at various places around the building: 357 ranks, all playable from a central 5-manual console in the gallery. Passau is in southeastern Bavaria, at the intersection of 3 rivers: the Inn, the Danube, & the Ilz. I had to edit out about 20 seconds of this piece to fit inside the Tube's time limits. Hopefully, it's not too obvious where; some people say Reger should be edited much more ;-). He CAN take a long time to explore a musical thought.

Max Reger, An die Hoffnung, Op. 124
Max Reger (1873-1916) came into the public eye as a song composer around the turn of the century, and it was then that the critic Emil Bohn stated of Reger and his songs, "He constructs his own world and does not care one dot whether his interpreters and audiences feel at home in it In the field of song in particular he sets out on paths on which only a small minority of his fellow human beings can follow him. Reger's songs cannot count on popularity; they may have a modest future as special material for the elect." To this a Munich colleague added, "Reger's songs are difficult for the singer, difficult for the accompanist, difficult for the hearer too... Figures such as Reger are actually looking forward to the public of a coming era; they address themselves to future audiences." But it was not only the novel or unusual character or complexity of Reger's songs that stood in the way of their broad circulation, as the composer himself knew. "I know that it is a difficult tsk to go in front of the public with such songs; after all, these songs so deliberately avoid that 'blockbuster' effect." Here he points to the reason why it would be difficult to win over future audiences as well, as today's concert programs prove. Avoidance of what he termed the "blockbuster effect," any sense of sensational display, was at the very heart of his compositional endeavoring in the field of song. His choice of text, the complexity and sophistication of his songs, and their esteem among ...

Max Reger - TE DEUM, op. 59/12 (Luca Massaglia; organ of Nantes Cathedral)
Luca Massaglia - www.lucamassaglia.com - plays ''Te Deum'' (no. 12 from ''Twelve Pieces'', op. 59) by Max Reger, live in concert at the Great Organ of Nantes Cathedral, France, 12 November 2006. The sequencer got out of order just before the concert and the crescendo of the last section is not so gradual like I programmed it to be.
