HD - Agra, India Cityscape
Agra ( Hindi: आगरा, Urdu: آ گرہ) aka Akbarabad is a city on the banks of the river Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India. With a population of 1686976 (2010 est.), it is one of the most populous cities in Uttar Pradesh and the 19th most populous in India. Because 80 percent of the city's sewage flows into Yamuna River, it is 20th most polluted city in India. The city finds mention in the epic Mahābhārata where it was called Agrevaṇa, or 'the border of the forest'. Legend ascribes the founding of the city to Rājā Badal Singh, a Sikarwar Rajput king (circa 1475), whose fort, Badalgarh, stood on or near the site of the present Fort. It achieved fame as the capital of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and remains a major tourist destination because of its many splendid Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Tāj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpūr Sikrī, all three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Seven wonders of the world - Taj Mahal, Agra
The Taj Mahal is a white Marble mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely recognized as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage. Taj Mahal is the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Turkish and Indian architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar component of the Taj Mahal, it is actually an integrated complex of structures. The construction began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, employing thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The construction of the Taj Mahal was entrusted to a board of architects under imperial supervision, including Abd ul-Karim Ma'mur Khan, Makramat Khan, and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer. Yamuna Expressway opens, travel Delhi to Agra in 2 hrs - NewsX
The 165-km Yamuna expressway that connects Noida and Agra is being thrown open to the public. The expressway reduces the distance between the two places by at least 2 hours. The toll for the expressway is around 346 rupees for a passenger car. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated the expressway via video conference from Lucknow. The project has witnessed many delays since it was conceived during the Mayawati regime in 2001. Put on hold between 2003 and 2007, it was revived in 2007 and renamed Yamuna Expressway. Frequent delays have been caused by farmer agitations over price of notified land in 334 villages where the expressway now stands. For more log on to www.newsx.com

Agra, India
Our first trip to India. From Delhi to the Taj Mahal to Agra Fort. Attention!!! All of the guidebooks that we read said that Agra was a slummy city not worth your time outside visiting the Taj Mahal, but after a day there, we fell completely in love with the city and the people. It's a financially poor city, but it has a genuine presence, worth exploring.

7 Wonders of India: Agra Fort
Agra Fort is one of the most important and robustly built stronghold of the Mughals, embellished with number of richly decorated buildings encompassing the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture. The fort, semi-circular on plan, is surrounded by a 21.4 m high fortification wall. It was re-constructed by the third Mughal emperor Akbar on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh. Some 4000 builders daily worked on it and it was completed in eight years. The great Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahanand Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travellers and the highest dignitaries who participated in the making of history in India.
