Meet the Author: Bob Spitz at Darien Library
On Monday, September 10, 2012, Bob Spitz, author of Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child was our guest speaker. It's rare for someone to emerge in America who can change our attitudes, our beliefs, and our very culture. It's even rarer when that someone is a middle-aged, six-foot three-inch woman whose first exposure to an unsuspecting public is cooking an omelet on a hot plate on a local TV station. And yet, that's exactly what Julia Child did. The warble-voiced doyenne of television cookery became an iconic cult figure and joyous rule-breaker as she touched off the food revolution that has gripped America for more than fifty years. Now, in Bob Spitz's definitive biography, he provides a clear-eyed portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential Americans of our time — a woman known to all, yet known by only a few. Dearie by Bob Spitz, read by Kimberly Farr (audiobook excerpt)
Now, in Bob Spitz's definitive, wonderfully affectionate biography, the Julia we know and love comes vividly — and surprisingly — to life. In Dearie, Spitz employs the same skill he brought to his best-selling, critically acclaimed book The Beatles, providing a clear-eyed portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential Americans of our time — a woman known to all, yet known by only a few. At its heart, Dearie is a story about a woman's search for her own unique expression. Julia Child was a directionless, gawky young woman who ran off halfway around the world to join a spy agency during World War II. She eventually settled in Paris, where she learned to cook and collaborated on the writing of what would become Mastering the Art of French Cooking, a book that changed the food culture of America. She was already fifty when The French Chef went on the air — at a time in our history when women weren't making those leaps. Julia became the first ...

Nicholas Hoare reviews "Dearie" by Bob Spitz
DEARIE THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF JULIA CHILD by BOB SPITZ She's been written about before, of course - and that, many a time - but perhaps to mark the centenary of her birth, herewith the crowning touch: a first-rate biography of Julia Child, five hundred pages strong, by an old and seasoned pro. Dearie is a delight. It could have been subtitled "Portrait of a Marriage", given the astonishing degree of affection and support her indulgent husband, Paul, provided; but as it is, we have here as fine an account of them both as we are likely to have in our lifetimes. This remarkable lady, as daunting as she was endearing, ushered in televised gastronomy almost single-handed - along with classic French cuisine. In so doing, she not only drove a coach and horses through the Betty Crocker era, but did so with such vim and vigour that she virtually launched PBS on her own. Tall and gangly, but endowed with a heart of gold and humour to match, her colourful legacy lives on, as does her durable oeuvre. A well-written, door-stopper of a book that rounds out the rough edges and becomes the one to beat. Please visit us at WWW.NICHOLASHOARE.COM for more video book reviews.

Dearie Audiobook: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child - Unabridged (Chapter 1, Part 1) Bob Spitz
Dearie Audiobook - bitly.com Click the above link to download the Dearie Audiobook in full The definitive biography of Julia Child - with access to Julia's diaries and letters - written by the author of the best-selling and critically acclaimed The Beatles and timed to Julia's 100th birthday. From Pasadena to Cambridge to New York, Washington, DC, India, Ceylon, Paris, Marseilles, Santa Barbara, and Maine, Bob Spitz re-creates an extraordinary life. He takes us beyond the image of Julia as the tall, eccentric woman with a funny voice who taught America how to cook, to establish her as a genuine rebel and beloved icon, a woman who redefined herself in middle age, helped to change the role of women in America, set the standard for how to create a public personality in the modern media world, and altered the way America eats and thinks of food. There might not be a Food Network or even a PBS if Julia had not blazed the trail. Spitz chronicles Julia's friendships, her struggles, her heartwarming romance with Paul, and of course, the story of the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her triumphant TV career. A thorough, surprising, affectionate, and extraordinarily entertaining account of a truly remarkable life.
