Buddhism - Ratana Sutta {Discourse Of thJewels}
Ratana Sutta Recital of avert Evil Forces The Buddha uttered the following powerful and effective Sutta (discourse) on His visit to the epidemic-stricken township of Vesali to bless victims to protect them from famine, sickness, evil spirits and other kinds of misfortune. During the Buddha's time, many people were benefited and misfortunes were averted following the recital of the Ratana Sutta. This Sutta also explains the highest qualities of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha by giving details of the Triple Gem in its various facets. At the end of every stanza the Buddha blessed everyone saying "By this truth may all beings be happy and blissful. " Sakka, the King requested the other sangha, who had assembled to hear this discourse, to radiate their loving-kindness towards human beings, and to protect those who remember them and fulfill their religious obligations. After hearing this Sutta, even Sakka the King, became delighted and paid homage to the Triple Gem by uttering the last three verses. All devotees are strongly urged to recite this Sutta daily, as well as during illness or at other times when they are disturbed. Occasionally, monks should be invited to their homes to chant this and other important Suttas. Ratana Sutta 1 Yanidha bhutani sama-gatani Bhumma-niva yaniva anta-likkhe Sabbeva bhuta sumana bhavantu Athopi sakkacca sunantu bhasitam English Whatsoever beings are here assembled Those of the earth or those of the air, may all of them be happy! Ratana Sutta: The Jewel Discourse
Website: www.facebook.com Blog: fullandhappy.wordpress.com The Ratana Sutta is a Buddhist discourse (Sanskrit sutra Pali, sutta) found in the Pali Canon's Sutta Nipata and Khuddakapatha; with a parallel in the Mahavastu. In the Pali it is seventeen verses in length, and in the Sanskrit version nineteen. The Ratana Sutta extols the characteristics of the three ratana (Pali for "gem" or "jewel" or "treasure") in Buddhism: the Enlightened One (Buddha), the Teaching (Dhamma) and the noble community of disciples (ariya Sangha). In Theravada Buddhism, according to post-canonical Pali commentaries, the background story for the Ratana Sutta is that the town of Vesali was being plagued by disease, non-human beings and famine; in despair, the townspeople called upon the Buddha for aid; he had the Ven. Ananda go through town reciting this discourse leading to the dispersal of the town's woes. In Theravada countries and institutions, this discourse is often recited as part of religious, public and private ceremonies for the purpose of blessing new endeavors and dispelling inauspicious forces
