Asgaerd - Time [1972 Progressive Rock UK]

The name 'Asgard', taken from ancient North European mythology, means 'castle of the gods'. Perhaps because of its Tolkien-esque resonance, it seems to be a popular one among progsters as it is shared by two other bands, one a 70's French folk outfit and the other a '90's Italian neo-prog group. English ASGARD consist of guitarist Rod Harrison (ex-PLEASE and psych-pop band BULLDOG BREED), vocalist James Smith and drummer Ian Snow (who both later went on to join STONEHOUSE CREEK), vocalist Ted Bartlett, bassist Dave Cook and violinist Peter Orgil. They released a 45 in 1972 containing 4 tracks, and then a year later Threshold produced their one and only LP, entitled "In the Realm of Asgard". Rather mainstream, the album is made up of 8 relatively short tracks and could be described as a cross between early 70's MOODY BLUES and ...

RHYTHM GUITAR: Chords of Progressive Rock
www.creativeguitarstudio.com Search Andrew Wasson.com for FREE lesson Handouts. This Video: July 20, 2012 | Search Videos by Title/Date. GO TO: www.andrewwasson.com Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question... Q: I am a HUGE fan of Alex Lifeson from Rush. His soloing is of course totally awesome, but my question isn't on his soloing, it's on his use of chords for rhythm guitar. Alex and guitarists like him, have a way of playing rhythm guitar where they jam riffs that are definitely not just power chords. Could you do a video that covers some 'other' types of rock chords? Thanks! Antonio - Chile, South America A: Whether it's your favorite player Alex Lifeson, or maybe Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Randy Rhodes or some other world famous rock guitarist, they will all tend to play a mix of chords that go beyond our typical two note -- root & 5th power chord. These chords (used by the progressive rock crowd) are one's that get carefully voiced to produce just the right type of color, and most of these chord voicings won't get all too muddy sounding like the way many of the standard major & minor chords tend to do when there's distortion added on the guitar amplifier. In the video, I work through a number of cool things you can do to with some common, and perhaps some - not so common chord types that will work excellent whether the distortion is cranked or not. And, these chords will really come in handy when you're feeling ...

This style developed from the late 1960s, reaching its peak of popularity in the mid-1970s, and showcased the highest levels of musicianship through lengthy, epic and often highly intricate compositions. Bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes, Caravan, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Rush would push the conventional boundaries of rock music, drawing inspiration from folk, classical, jazz and Eastern styles, usually heavily themed around a central story, each track an element in an overall concept.

In Deep: Progressive Rock
This lesson continues at: www.guitarworld.com The following content is related to the September 2012 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now, or in our online store:store.guitarworld.com With the growing popularity of rock music in the mid-to-late Sixties, a great many young up-and-coming musicians were inspired — and encouraged — to push the limits of the musical form beyond anything that had come before. The very roots of what was to become known as the progressive rock movement may be hard to pin down, but no doubt the musical experimentation of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan encouraged an ever-widening musical palette, inviting the musical creativity of early progressive bands like Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, Soft Machine, Procol Harum and Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention.
