Ancient Rainforest Discovered Under Antarctica's Ice
Watch: youtube.com slatev.com Follow twitter.com facebook.com Antarctica has yielded implications about global warming that are chilling. Drilling deep into the seabed just off Earth's southernmost continent, researchers have discovered remnants of a near-tropical rainforest that existed 50 million years ago. During this period, known as the early Eocene era, the Earth experienced dramatic greenhouse conditions with high atmospheric carbon dioxide counts and palm trees growing around the South Pole. Ancient history, right? Not according to an article in this week's issue of Nature, where Antarctic researchers warn that, while the 30 percent growth of our CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution are still a fraction of the Eocene's, they are projected to see those very same prehistoric greenhouse gas levels within decades, issuing in the start of another Eocene-like epoch. Looks like it might be time to start passing out sunblock to those penguins.

Antarctic Ice
The passengers of the M/S Expedition fall in love with Antarctica. A few then treat some ice with unmerited rudeness. Anyone who used that ice in their cocktail later, you may not want to see this! This footage is mostly from Pleneau Bay, but some shots are from the Lemaire Channel. The two pieces of music are similar but different because they were inspired by the Antarctic and Arctic respectively. Apologies for the little bird tweets throughout! NOTE TO SELF: Record at night. Also, apologies for playing the piano poorly. If by some extraordinary coincidence there is someone out there who: 1. Can play the piano 2. Feels like learning these pieces (very simple to learn by most people's standards, I'm sure) 3. Has the means to record these pieces I'd be very interested in talking to you and please feel free to send me a message (via my youtube account).

Strange Creature Found 600 Feet Under Antarctica Ice
"At a depth of 600 feet beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet, a small shrimp-like creature managed to brighten up an otherwise gray polar day in November 2009. Bob Bindschadler of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., remembers the day well. He and his team were on a joint NASA-National Science Foundation expedition to examine the underside of the ice sheet when they found the pinkish-orange creature swimming beneath the ice." The Arctic's Record Breaking Ice Melt
The sea ice in the Arctic Ocean dropped below the previous all-time record set in 2007. This year also marks the first time that there has been less than 4 million square kilometers (1.54 million square miles) of sea ice since satellite observations began in 1979. This animation shows the 2012 time-series of ice extent using sea ice concentration data from the DMSP SSMI/S satellite sensor. The black area represents the daily average (median) sea ice extent over the 1979-2000 time period. Layered over top of that are the daily satellite measurements from January 1 -- September 14, 2012. A rapid melt begins in July, whereby the 2012 ice extents fall far below the historical average. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (www.nsidc.org) will confirm the final minimum ice extent data and area once the melt stabilizes, usually in mid-September.

Antarctica Time lapse: A Year on Ice
Check out my new Antarctica Year on Ice feature film!: www.frozensouth.com Go to www.antarcticimages.com for a better quality version of this clip. This is a demo clip I did back in 2005 to demonstrate the potential for time-lapse imgery in Antarctica. This time-lapse video was filmed in Antarctica, in and around McMurdo Station and Scott Base back in 2005. Each year the sun is below the horizon for 4 months in the middle of winter, and above the horizon for 4 months in summer. During the couple of months in between we have more-or-less normal days. Includes shots of auroras and the very rare polar stratospheric nacreous clouds, which form when ozone depleting gases crystallize in the upper atmosphere in the intense cold. Summer population is about 1200 people, winter about 200. Check out my other videos as well for more of life on the Ice. For those of you who have been asking about the music I used here, the first piece of music is "Whirl-Y-Reel" by Afro Celt Sound System, the second is "The Grand Finale" from the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack by Danny Elfman. Both are available at most music outlets.

NASA | Warm Ocean Currents Cause Majority of Ice Loss from Antarctica
Warm ocean currents attacking the underside of ice shelves are the dominant cause of recent ice loss from Antarctica. This animation shows the circulation of ocean currents around the western Antarctic ice shelves. The shelves are indicated by the rainbow color; red is thicker (greater than 550 meters), while blue is thinner (less than 200 meters). Antarctic: Grand Canyon-sized rift 'speeding ice melt'
A rift in the Antarctic rock as deep as the Grand Canyon is increasing ice melt from the continent, researchers say. A UK team found the Ferrigno rift using ice-penetrating radar, and showed it to be about 1.5km (1 mile) deep. Antarctica is home to a geological rift system where new crust is being formed, meaning the eastern and western halves of the continent are slowly separating. The team writes in Nature journal that the canyon is bringing more warm sea water to the ice sheet, hastening melt. The Ferrigno rift lies close to the Pine Island Glacier where Nasa scientists found a giant crack last year; but the newly discovered feature is not thought to be influencing the "Pig", as it is known. The rift lies beneath the Ferrigno Ice Stream on a stretch of coast so remote that it has only been visited once previously. Continue reading the main story " Start Quote The geology and the present rate of ice loss are intricately linked" Prof David Vaughan BAS The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) project revisited the area two years ago in the person of Aberdeen University glaciologist Robert Bingham. The plan was to make ground observations that could link to the satellite data showing unexpectedly pronounced ice loss from the area. The team towed ice-penetrating radar kit behind a snowmobile, traversing a total of about 2500km (1500 miles). "What we found is that lying beneath the ice there is a large valley, parts of which are approximately a mile deeper than the surrounding ...

Antarctic Ice Marathon 2011 (Official Video)
More than 40 competitors from 15 countries gathered on the frozen continent to take part in the world's southernmost half-marathon, marathon and ultramarathon races. The Antarctic Ice Marathon races are the only official foot races within the Antarctic Circle on the mainland continent. On 1 December 2011, Clement Thevenet (FRA) dominated the men's marathon (42.195km) distance when running a record time of 3:47:07. In amazingly bright sunshine and temperatures of -18C, the Frenchman led from start to finish to take the title ahead of the USA's Alvin Matthews and Matthew Von Ertfelda. Yvonne Brown (GBR) was a worthy winner of the women's race in 4:26:10, finishing ahead of two previous North Pole Marathon winners, Emer Dooley (IRL) and Alison Hamlett (GBR). NASA maps Earth's polar ice caps
A NASA airborne laboratory, flying out of Punta Arenas in southern Chile, is conducting the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice caps. With plans to map three-dimensional views of the Antarctic region and armed with sophisticated radar and altimeter lasers, "Operation Ice Bridge" will enable scientists ble to compare ice sheets' thickness from one year to the next which will help determining how quickly the ocean may rise. The study will produce similar data on the Arctic region. The effects of melting ice caps are one of the issues being highlighted at the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference under way in South Africa. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from over the Antarctic Peninsula.

NASA: Full Map of Antarctic Ice Flow [720p]
NASA-funded researchers have created the first complete map of the speed and direction of ice flow in Antarctica. The map, which shows glaciers flowing thousands of miles from the continent's deep interior to its coast, will be critical for tracking future sea-level increases from climate change. The team created the map using integrated radar observations from a consortium of international satellites. "This is like seeing a map of all the oceans' currents for the first time. It's a game changer for glaciology," said Eric Rignot of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and the University of California (UC), Irvine. Rignot is lead author of a paper about the ice flow published online Thursday in Science Express. "We are seeing amazing flows from the heart of the continent that had never been described before." Rignot and UC Irvine scientists Jeremie Mouginot and Bernd Scheuchl used billions of data points captured by European, Japanese and Canadian satellites to weed out cloud cover, solar glare and land features masking the glaciers. With the aid of NASA technology, the team painstakingly pieced together the shape and velocity of glacial formations, including the previously uncharted East Antarctica, which comprises 77 percent of the continent. Like viewers of a completed jigsaw puzzle, the scientists were surprised when they stood back and took in the full picture. They discovered a new ridge splitting the 5.4 million-square-mile (14 million-square ...
