Mobilien: Paris Version of Bus Rapid Transit
Le Mobilien is Paris' version of what we know as a bus rapid transit system or a surface mass transport network. Paris has been doing bus rapid transit for decades, and after years of on-street operation and continuous fine-tuning they have now developed a system which they call the Mobilien - French for MOBI-lity plus LIEN which means link. Linking mobility. Unlike the BRTs that most US cities are looking at, the Mobilien adapts to different city contexts (ie street width and specific neighborhood dynamics). Mobilien doesn't aim at producing top speeds but making steady progress through the traffic stream. It launched in Paris after three years of planning in 2004 with the goal of cutting down on car traffic. To make the project possible, Paris' officials eliminated much on-street parking to create dedicated bus lanes that are shared with bicycles, taxis and emergency vehicles. Eric Britton from the new Mobility Agenda took me on a tour of Mobilien.

Curitibas BRT: Inspired Bus Rapid Transit Around the World
Curitiba, Brazil first adopted its Master Plan in 1968. Since then, it has become a city well known for inventive urban planning and affordable (to the user and the city) public transportation. Curitiba's Bus Rapid Transit system is the source of inspiration for many other cities including the TransMilenio in Bogotá, Colombia; Metrovia in Guayaquil, Ecuador; as well as the Orange Line of Los Angeles. This video illustrates how Curitiba's public transportation system operates and the urban planning and land use principles on which it is based, including an interview with the former Mayor and architect Jaime Lerner. Current city employees also discuss the improvements that are being made to the system to keep it up to date and functioning at the capacity of a typical subway system. Curitiba is currently experimenting with adding bypassing lanes on the dedicated BRT routes and smart traffic lights to prioritize buses. They are even constructing a new line which will have a linear park and 18km of bike lane that parallels the bus transit route.

Costs & Advantages of Bus Rapid Transit.mov
www.voteben2012.com http Cost and advantages of bus rapid transit A study by the United States General Accounting Office concluded that bus rapid transit presents an attractive option for mass transit and has several advantages over rail systems. Those advantages include lower capital cost for construction and a lower operating cost and also higher speeds. In comparing the capital cost of constructing a heavy rail system versus a bus system, the numbers are really astonishing: the Honolulu rail would cost as much as $300 million per mile, whereas you can improve a lane for buses on arterial streets for $1 million per mile, or you could build a new lane for buses -- the busw ay would cost about $14 million per mile, again compared to the Honolulu rail system at $300 million per mile. So it's just a huge difference. Advocates for rail like to claim that the operating costs for rail is less than that for bus rapid transit, but this is not true either. When you factor in all of the numbers, it turns out that the BRT (bus rapid transit) systems are less expensive to operate than light rail. This is partly due to their greater ridership and their greater flexibility: the buses don't have to be running all day empty the way trains will be in the nonpeak hours. Studies comparing the operating costs of rail versus bus rapid transit have been conducted in Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, San Diego and San Jose and in all cases they found on average the bus rapid transit ...

Bus Rapid Transit: Economic Development at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College
Tim Seidel and Paul Karam, both 2011 graduates of the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management program at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, talk about a project they worked on for the Port Authority of Allegheny County. The students worked with teammates to study the feasibility of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for a portion of the Port Authority's transit system.

East Bay BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) 3D Simulations
The future of transportation is here. This 3D simulation of the AC Transit's proposed East Bay Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), a state-of-the-art new transit system that will connect Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro. Bus Rapid Transit is essentially light rail without the tracks. It combines the speed and capacity of light rail with the convenience and affordability of riding the bus. With dedicated lanes and signal priority, BRT moves faster than regular traffic, offering a more efficient ride for passengers. In addition, BRT can be deployed more quickly than light rail and at a fraction of the cost. AC Transits proposed BRT project is a high-capacity rapid transit system that will operate between Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro, from Telegraph Avenue to East 14th Street to International Boulevard. Take a ride with this 3D simulation that will make you feel that you are in a bright, and green, future. For more information, visit www.actforme.org. This simulation was prepared by Newfoundland, Inc and Singer and Associates, Inc.

Xiamen BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)
This is city Xiamen in Fujian province of China. They have this elevated bus transport system, which works similarly to metro. I just used this elevated bus only once. Tickets and ticket gates are similar to metro, there is also security gate, which opens when bus stops. It costs from 0.5 RMB to 2 RMB to ride (about 22 euro cents). Normal ground bus costs 1 RMB, but it has to depend from traffic on the road.
