Freescale Semiconductor Promo Spot
Was assigned as ACD on the design/post portion of a SCAD sponsored project for Freescale Semiconductor. The spot shows off the features and fun that comes with a children’s tablet concept being developed by Freescale. Working with the other ACD, duties included art directing the final shooting boards, supervising/directing VFX portions of the live action shoot, and overseeing the overall direction of the final edit, art direction, and design of the project as well as designing and animating entire scenes myself.

Freescale i.MX 6
We had a blast producing this project for Freescale Semiconductor's presence at Computex in Taipei. We started with their tagline "Your interface to the world" and pitched a first person "POV" style shoot to illustrate all the different applications there are for the new line of processors.
After doing research and tests with several POV HD cameras (GoPro, Countour, VIO) we settled on the new VIO POV HD camera because we found the image quality to be superior. We went through 4 different cameras unfortunately, as they appear to be still working out the kinks, but successfully captured the footage we needed.
Post production was pretty intense, as we knew it would be starting 3 weeks before the show. Almost all of the shots were run through syntheyes, or mocha pro, or both, depending on what we were inserting into the scene and what device screens needed to be replaced. Working with the extreme fisheye of the POV style HD cameras required a fairly involved workflow of undistorting the footage, which created a base plate twice the size of 1080p footage, tracking the footage in both Syntheyes and Mocha, creating all of the 2D / 3D graphics and then finally inverting the distortion on the master comp to return the source footage to it's original state and introducing fisheye to all of the post fx / graphics. We wrapped everything up doing the sound design / audio editing and mixing in house.
You always wish you had more time and we would have preferred dropping a few of the scenes to cut the length, but in the end we are super happy and proud with how things turned out and so were our clients over at Freescale.

Fisheye tracking and compositing workflow
AE Project (cs 5.5)
http://www.impossibleengine.com/uploads/fisheye_workflow_ae.zip
We recently completed a project for Freescale Semiconductor's booth at Computex that we're really proud of. Not just because we think it turned out really cool, but also because we overcame some fairly substantial workflow challenges. We thought we'd share this in the event it might help someone else out as we put quite a few hours into r&d.;
The concept was basically people using devices to interact with their world, playing off the freescale tagline "your interface to the world". In this scene, our actor is looking for a place to eat and though his phone has access to all sorts of information like navigation and reviews and so on applied as overlays in the scene. We chose this scene because it has almost all of the elements in it we used across the project. There is a syntheyes solve, a mocha track / screen key, and of course the insane fisheye lens distortion.
There are really only 3 HD POV contenders in the consumer/prosumer market right now. The Contour, the GoPro and the VIO POV. Sony makes a POV camera as well but the footage is interlaced and would have added another layer of complexity to the process, as well as make tracking more difficult, so it was disqualified from consideration.
We shot this footage with the VIO POV HD camera. We would love to have shot this with a professional camera rig, but the nature of the shoot (mounting camera between the eyes) and the budget called for a more DIY approach. We went with the VIO because we felt like the picture quality was better than either the Contour or the GOPRO, especially indoors, but more importantly there was less rolling shutter. Also an enormous deciding factor, the VIO was the only one of these cameras that has a way to monitor in real time (although the new contour + appears to have monitoring capabilities), which was important for framing purposes. After some experimentation we ended up mounting the camera on a bike helmet and trailed along behind the actor with the viewfinder giving direction.
You'll notice a fair amount of autoexposure going on and on the darker shots there was definitely a fair amount of motion blur to contend with, but overall, it did a pretty good job for us on this guerilla-style shoot. You'll notice we covered up the screen with paper for tracking in a replacement and also for keying later in post.
The biggest challenge we faced was definitely the lens distortion. We needed to track the footage in SynthEyes to solve for our 3D camera and place layers convincingly in the scene, as well as in Mocha to do all of the necessary screen replacement and rotoscoping. The issue here is that we needed the graphics and screens we inserted in the scene to match the lens distortion of the shot footage.
Thanks to Victor Wolansky and FXphd for pointing us to the AE workflow for the lens distortion. Maybe this will help someone, feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions!

UI concept video, Freescale-SCAD
This video presents the OS/GUI for a system that does not have a touch screen. However, many of the elements in the UI could be used in a touch screen environment. The design was developed in a graduate interaction design studio for Freescale Semiconductor.
The video was created for Freescale after they approached the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) looking for ways to expand the use of the ARM processor. SCAD's industrial design department took on this challenge by creating a Smartbook. This was one of two interfaces that we proposed for the Smartbook that displayed ideas we thought would be effective for the teen/tween market, ages 10-16. We conducted research and developed the work in ten weeks. Though this video was refined in week 11.

Rd.4 Fuji Race - Freescale OGT! Racing #90 Onboard Video - The Dry Gamble
Rd.4 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Japan at Fuji Speedway during the Freescale One Make Festival. #90 Freescale OGT! Racing team chose dry tires based on improving wet conditions. However, after a couple of laps of improving track, humidity increased while the temperature dropped, causing the strategy to backfire, and the fog lifted only with a few laps to spare at the end of the 15-lap race. While the leaders were running at 2-minute + lap times, the #90 car did manage 1:58:xx time at the end of the race, but the improving surface conditions did not come soon enough during the short race. Race ended for the #90 car in 13th, having passed some cars that were on wet tires near the end of the race. Start from 3rd position on dry tires in the wet.
