The Battle of Pelusium: a Persian Victory Decided by Cats
The Battle of Pelusium was a battle waged between Ancient Egypt under Pharaoh Psametik III and Cambyses II, King of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. The most recognisable feature is the Persian victory due to Cambyses’ use of animals (especially cats), and the image of the goddess Bastet to win the war. The battle resulted in the first Persian conquest of Egypt, and Persia was victorious because of Cambyses’ knowledge of Egyptian culture, although it is thought that he probably would have won anyway with his greater experience in war compared to Psametik.
Because Cambyses II knew of the Egyptian culture, he knew of their veneration of the goddess Bastet, so he had the image of the goddess painted onto the shield of his soldiers, and before the front line herded a number of animals that the...

The Battle of Pelusium: When Cats Became Shields
Have you ever heard of the war where cats were used as shields? In the Battle of Pelusium in 525 BCE, the Persian king Cambyses II used a very unusual strategy to defeat the Egyptians: he used cats as shields.
Cats were sacred to the Egyptians and closely associated with the goddess Bastet. Cambyses II knew this and used it to his advantage. He and his soldiers captured several cats, and used them as shields in their attack on the city of Pelusium. The Persian army herded cats in front of their battle line, and even painted cats onto their shields.
The Egyptians were afraid to hurt the sacred cats and incur the wrath of Bastet. They were shaken by this tactic,...

They were shaken by this tactic, and were decisively defeated.
If you are curious about the history of the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, and many other Empires and Kingdoms, you are in the right place!
