To answer this question, this book provides the first comparative anthropological explorations of charisma as it occurs among Charismatic Catholics, Evangelical Protestants, Sufis, Hassidic Jews, Buddhist cultists, and Native American shamans in locations ranging from Massachusetts to Syria; from Taiwan to the Dominican Republic; from Angola to the jungles of Paraguay, from Rome to Brooklyn. These cases reveal how various religious traditions incorporate ecstatic charismatic experiences within their overarching organizational systems, and so provide new insight into the nature of religion today.- published: 18 Dec 2013

Moneyless in Moab
Interweaving philosophical conversations with suelo in his cave and treehouse with colorful footage of his daily activities in town and in nature, MONEYLESS IN MOAB offers an intimate look at a person who embodies a radical alternative to our excessively consumeristic american way of life. The film opens our eyes to the fact that it is indeed possible to live happily without money, and to do so with joy, grace, and dignity, even in a world gone mad with attachment.
Daniel Shellabarger (aka suelo) is a student of world religions and anthropology who is unhappy with the worldwide “money religion” and currently lives without the direct use of money. He likes nature, travel, and tequila—when someone else is buying. He is currently hitchhiking and roaming around the pacific northwest, living in the moment and practicing non-attachment. His blog ( http://zerocurrency.blogspot.com ) is a good place to read his reflections as he surfs though this universe.

The Minstrel
This documentary has been created as part of the Digital Anthropology (MSc) program at UCL and has been nominated one of the three best films in the autumn/winter class in 2012.
It is about Ozan Figani’s life, a hairdresser originally from Turkey, Anatolia, who owns a traditional Salon in East London. Little by little he starts to reveal his true first job (music and poem writing).
He is an Alevi. In Turkey, Alevism (considered by many to be a religion similar to Buddhism or a simple way of living) is a popular belief embedded in many political conflicts. It has been oppressed and forbidden for many years in Turkey and only nowadays it is a bit more acceptable.
That’s why the culture is based in oral practices (it was danger to have any kind of register) such as traditional sayings and poems in the form of songs and through the teachings of the chosen Minstrels (called Ozans).
So, in order to keep Alevism alive, Ozan Figani follows the journey as a minstrel: carrying the messages from the past and transmitting it for the future generations.

The Fetishization of Virginity
The Fetishization of Virginity
An educational investigation that asks why concepts like virginity (specifically female virginity) might be elevated to a fetish-like status. It traces a biological argument as well as a fly through early hominid transition into agriculture. Then it moves towards linguistic, evolutionary, patriarchal, and ideological reasoning. The study is incomplete but hopefully will allow further argumentation and inquiry.

Sydney Has No Horses: Documentary Trailer
Sidney Has No Horses is a Medicine Man, carpenter, hunter, artist . . . Chief. His ceremonies are authentic; his spiritual lineage is legendary including Frank Fools Crow, and Crazy Horse.
Filmmakers Salvatore Consalvi and Brigitte Timmerman have received unprecedented access to his life, spiritual beliefs, home, and community.
The life of a authentic Medicine Man includes frequent shifts of consciousness and access to a spirit world that is far more diverse than the modern mind is willing to accept. The crew has experienced many of these as Sidney attempts bring ancestral teachings back to a very divisive and fractured community.
Additional research in consciousness studies, psychology, and anthropology are creating an audio-visual tapestry of indigenous culture and religious identity, of modern science and the mystical experience.
The documentary reveals both private visions and a rich, holistic world-view that will seem strange, outdated or even insane to those of us most conditioned by modern, industrial culture. But with this documentary we see that Sidney willfully opens himself to ridicule and strife in an attempt to preserve his culture for future Lakota and to accurately reveal it to the modern world.
In this way the documentary explores the suffering and dark humor of modern humans living an indigenous religion in the corporate age.
Please join us on this rare journey through deprivation and suffering to the; spirituality and pride that connect one indigenous community to its ancestors and the Great Mystery.
