Henry Louis Gates, Jr., on William Styron and The Confessions of Nat Turner
Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and the Director of the WEB Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University. Watch Gates, one of the foremost academic authorities on African American history, discuss one of the twentieth century's most jarring literary events: the publication of William Styron's novel, The Confessions of Nat Turner, at the height of the civil rights movement. The Confessions of Nat Turner is a gripping portrait of the leader of America's bloodiest slave revolt. It is a galvanizing portrayal of the crushing institution of slavery. See Gates speak about his first encounters with the novel and with the man who wrote it. Learn more: www.openroadmedia.com

William Styron: A Writer and his Father
An overnight literary star when Lie Down in Darkness (1951) debuted, William Styron went on to collect top honors for The Confessions of Nat Turner (1967), and watch Sophie's Choice (1979) become an Academy Award--winning film. One of the most important American writers of the twentieth century, he owes much of his success to the bottomless support and unconditional love of his father. "Our father's relationship with his father was the most important relationship of his life," says the author's youngest daughter, Alexandra Styron. Styron's correspondence with his father sustained him, while he wrote Lie Down in Darkness at age 25. Watch Alexandra read from one particularly significant 1951 letter.

William Styron talks about SHADRACH
"In the case of SHADRACH, I had so many things involved in it. This is an ancient old man. He's 99 years old. Well just by coincidence, my father--who lived to be almost 90--was, at that moment in my life, dying himself. He had reached the end of his life. And he was living with us. And the connection was obvious. I saw this dying white man. And I transposed him into the body of this dying black man. So there are a lot of things like that that enter into one's creative process." Open Road Media: Styron, Pulitzer Contender at Age Twenty-Six
William Styron famously received the Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for his controversial novel The Confessions of Nat Turner. Less known, however, is the fact that he was a serious contender fifteen years before that.
Watch Styron's daughter, Alexandra, read from a letter editor Hiram Haydn wrote to her father regarding the Pulitzer results in 1952. Herman Wouk's Caine Mutiny won that year's prize, but William Styron's debut novel, Lie Down in Darkness, was shortlisted for consideration. Watch to see how the votes played out, learn which other classic novel the twenty-six-year-old Styron beat out in votes, and click through to check out the book that the Pulitzer committee loved.

Open Road: The Power of Place (Natalie Goldberg, Susan Minot, William Styron)
"Place is majorly important," says Susan Minot, author of the award-winning novel Monkeys. Some writers, like Minot, find it necessary to travel and see different parts of the world in order to work. Others, like Natalie Goldberg and William Styron, work best in remote areas and small rooms, preferably without windows. This, of course, is part of the the beauty of writing—it can be done almost anywhere. Watch Susan Minot, Natalie Goldberg, and William Styron's widow, Rose, discuss the impact that place has on the writing life. Their stories reveal that there are as many great places to write as there are writers who use them.
